First thought ... am i the only one wearing a suit ?
*slightly embarassed*
A little while later ... "No, i have company". :)
GD ... A case study regarding the functioning of the Itarsi Institute of Management. I spoke for a reasonable amount of time ... with a few points. But it was much lesser than the amount i generally speak. The passion is simply not there in a case study. :((
I thought i wrote the summary quite well. Missed just one point at the end.
Interview
Q Aren't you feeling hot ?
A Bangalore is cooler than Chennai.
Q What are your views about the awards being given by state govts to Sania Mirza ... people like Vishwanathan Anand were not encouraged this way.
A Media was not so powerful then. Now we have a hype surrounding Sania. Anyway ... state govt awards are useless ... example of that guy from Balia.
Q What are macro and micro structures of chemical systems ?
A What !!!! I don't know ... ok ... let me explain. Started on the macro properties of matter. The panelist cut me off.
Q What are micro processors ?
A Said something
Q Then what are high performance microprocesors and how do you distinguish them from medium or low performance ones ?
A Never heard of the term medium performance microprocessor.
Q What are neural networks ?
A Hadn't heard the question clearly. So said no. The panelist gave a caustic reply that "you are a fresher ... if we don't ask you acads, what will we ask you ? " I politely asked him to repeat.
Gave some gyaan on neural networks.
Q How are they different from linear networks ?
A The methods of learning ... example, back propagation learning law.
Q What sort of circuit will you use to implement a neural network ?
A Sequential ... as we have feedback.
Q Sure ?
A Yes (after a little thought)
Q What are the principles of compiler design ?
A Tried to say something for a minute ... but he wanted a point by point answer.
Q What are the principles of language programming ?
A I don't know.Sorry sir ... i can't mention it in a point by point form.
Q You have done a course in EU studies ?
A Doing it this semester.
Q Name some cities in Canada and Australia.
A Named 4 in canada and 7 in australia.
Q Name some cities in Africa.
A Named some 8-10.
Q Name the currencies of some South east asian nations.
A Named 4 ... then said i don't know any more sir.
Q How can you reduce poverty in india ?
A Gyaan on corruption and implementations at the grass root level.
Q Why do you like gmail ?
A Gyaan on the advantages of gmail.
Q What are stochastic processes ?
A Said something ... which had technical terms in it.
Q What's the difference between random event and random variable ?
A Explained ... with example.
Q Then what's the difference between an event and a random event ?
A A non random event is repeatable and predictable.
Q An example.
A Throw a glass plate from the top of a building ... it will certainly break. That's an event. Throw a dice ... different possible outputs. So random event.
Q What are primal and dual in Linear Programming ?
A Expained, with an example.
Q Are you sure these two LP's will give the same optimum ?
A Yes ... sure.
Q Are history and politics related ?
A Yes, definitely.
Q Fit in a mathematical relation between them.
A History causes politics.
Q Is cause a mathematical operator ?
A Sorry sir, i can't recall any specific mathematical operator to fit in here.
Q Thank you.
*while i was leaving*
Q How many calls do you have ?
A All six sir.
Disclaimer : The order in which the various questions have been asked may be different from what i have written here.
Anecdote : I was the first person in my group to be interviewed. After the 2nd guy was done, one of the panelist came to call the 3rd one. I was standing and talking to someone else. He signalled me ... either to go or to talk softly.
Comments please.
Q Why do you like gmail ?
A Gyaan on the advantages of gmail.
Hey T,
Where did you mention Gmail on ur form?
Was it meant to be a stress interview? I mean was there bombardment of questions?
Krain
Hey T,
Where did you mention Gmail on ur form?
Was it meant to be a stress interview? I mean was there bombardment of questions?
Krain
I gave my gmail address as my email address.
It wasn't a stress interview ... except maybe for one of the panelists.
I had my interview last week on the 21st .. didn't get around to posting till now. We were a group of 23 , two girls including me.
The case study was abt a person from a small village who moves to the city does well in his business for three years, but currently is in a lot of trouble because of increased competition, stricter government rules and dip in revenues. The case study was pretty normal, no exceptional insights from anybody.
I was the first one to be called for the interview in my group.
Tell us something abt yourself.
I could have done this part a lot better.
what is a periodic function
told
Give examples

I try saying something abt degree equivalence, he cuts me and asks me to give a proper definition
I say something and stop it midway
Can you write the fourier series
Sorry sir, I don't remember
Fourier transform
midway again
Give applications of the transform
answered tht
Explain your work to us?
I do tht.. for sometime.
What programming language do you use??
None sir
No coding, what software??
I repeat a lot abt my work trying to explain how coding isn't required.

ATB divya .... Why d'ya think they started off on maths, of all things n stuck with it for so long?? Not tht they asked u impossibly complicated stuff, but they haven't really checked up nebodys quantitative affinity n ability b4, hv they?

no idea .. as far as i know, periodic functions, transforms and distributions have been favourites with panels at both I and K this year.
AFAIK, Tamil belongs to a different family altogether. It is probably derived from
an ancient dravidian dialect that we haven't heard of.
Sanskrit is an Indo-European language that originated in Central Asia/NW frontiers of the subcontinent.
Almost all Indian languages are derived from it except for the dravidian ones.
Reminds me of an old saying in Tamil that Tamil was born before the birth of stones and sand. No ancestry is known. All Dravidian languages originate from Tamil n Malayalam is the yougest of the prominent four. Sanskrit is root of other Indian languages and is of Arryan origin while Tamil is of dravidian origin. THis is the root cause of the Classical language scuffle that's going on now. Correct me if Im wrong.
My take is: I don't think this'd cost the call coz u anyway gave the hint that you know the answer. Only that you were confused by them.

I can try to answer this. We have a Quants course in every term in the first year, and all we deal with is LP and advanced statistics - pretty heavy quants stuff. That's probably the reason why anyone with a vestige of maths background is being quizzed.

"vestige of maths background".... tht gives hope .... coz i said my goodbyes n farewells to math aeons ago (and i've been happy ever after ) .... I do hope they don't get mathematical with me and screw my happiness .... However since I believe in Murphy's law, gotta gear up for the worst ... So wht d'ya think, generally speakin, wht kinda quant questions can we (read ppl with non-maths bckgrnd) be expect to firefight.....For the record, mez a mass media grad.
btw whts LP?
Potentially BBQed,
Sanika

Not really sure coz I haven't heard of anyone in our batch being quizzed on Maths. Statistics, P&C; and Probability are real good targets coz they inevitably come in many subjects. But then, its just a conjecture...
Mass media is actually a good target for them coz it is directly Marketing related... brush the fundaes.
btw whts LP?
Linear Programming. IIT guys must've worked on this. No one else will probably be expected to know this stuff.
"
btw whts LP?
As GOVAR, rightly pointed out, LP is Linear Programming
Its a part of Operations Research.
LP basically converts physical sysetm into a mathematical model (only linear variables), provides best course of management, also provides for sensitivity analysis.
Simplex, Transportation problem, Assignment problem, Duplex, etc... are types of LP
ok.. how deep into quant do u think theyre gonna get with me? im a BSc in stats with maths and stats as my subjects!
im like their dream target!!
now im scared! :-?
"BSc in stats ":wow:
may your soul rest in peace.
guyz heres my profile...

ok..here goes..
venue: bangalore
24th feb , 2.00 PM
reached the venue much earlier and had to spend a boring hour and a half before the gd.
GD - case study
..about a retired army officer...who wants some challenging job...appointed to manage a company or something (dont remember it) in bhopal...forces employees to work state holidays....all hell breaks loose...lots of complaints...what do the person who appointed him(some big wig) do?
the gd went for 10 to 15 minutes...seemed to be centered around the fact that the "hero" coming from an army life lacked the management sensitivities and stuff like that...everyone kept rephrasing the same ideas....
there were 3 in the panel...a smiling guy (S) who actually called us for the gd , one stern looking guy(T) and a third one whose looks portended a stress PI(Y) . T and Y sat silently throughout the gd appraising us closely...
I was the second last to be interviewed
i enter the room when S asks me to shut the door
S: tyagarajan what do you do
Me: tell him abt my work...(funny both K and I started the same way)
S: do you know any famous personalities by your name
Me: i tell him abt the great carnatic singer...
S: anyone else...
Me: tell him abt an old tamil actor(really old - around the time movies started in indiai sppse)...;-) .
S: where r u from?
Me: tell him that i'm from cbe and work at chennai
S: whats the socio-economic importance of cbe
Me: tell him ..economically, its called the manchester of south india..and about textile industry there
S: what kind of textile?
Me: (confused)...
S: i mean jute,nylon...
Me: oh cotton textiles...
S: ok...
Me: (thinking on the socio-economic term)...tell him socially there was this famous guy called VOC who hailed from cbe and fought for idependence
S: (nods)....name some ports in the eastern coast of india
Me: tell him
S: what are india's major exports...
Me: give him bullshit like jute, rubber and all
S: why all plantation crops?..anything else
Me: give him more bullshit like minerals and all(dont even know if india exports some stuff i mentioned)
T: ..software...
Me: what?(didnt even realise that he was telling one more thing that we export)
T: dont we export software?
Me: yes (though i doubt abt how true it is technically)
S: tell me some national parties in tamil nadu
Me: tell him
S: tell me some regional parties
Me: tell him and say AIADMK also...
T: AIADMK?.....whats the full form..
Me: All india - (T cuts me):wow:
T: All india?...so how do you say its a regional party?
Me: i knew i farted but told him that its influence was regional...
T: whats the currency of europe?
Me: Euro
T: whats the conversion rate/
Me: tell him i am not sure but say its around 60
T: what all countries adopt euro
Me: start by telling many european countries including UK...then stop and tell him that uk still uses pounds...
T:So you have organized a conference on advanced computing...what is this conference?
Me: tell him about it
T: so what exactly is this advanced computing?
Me: a murky question and i gave him an equally murky answer with terms like AI , neural networks thrown in....(was immediately afraid that he might go into those)
T: who uses this advanced computing...
Me: (seemed like a stupid question)..before i could ponder...he continued
T: do big corporates use it
Me: gave him a vague answer like 'advanced computing' signified state of the art ..concepts of the future and corporates wouldnt risk it until a technology became sure shot..
T: name a technology used in my washing machine?
Me: fuzzy logic (dont know why i said that)
T: tell me abt it
Me: explained in general what fuzzy logic was all about
T: whats its use in washing machine?
i guess i goofed up big time here...
Me: gave him a very vague explanation ( i honestly didnt know an iota about it)
T: grilled me more
Me: tol him i havent studied about it nor have worked with it and only have a very vague idea...
Y: (he was quiet all this while)...ok what programming languages have you studied?
Me: (here goes) c,c++,java,COBOL.. (praying he would ask something on java coz i suck at all others)
Y: ok state pythagorous theorem?
Me: i 'state'
Y: write it down...he hands me a sheet of paper
Y: ok , now write a C++ program (damn!!) that calculates the value of the two sides for each value of the hypotenuse from 1 to 100..
Me: :bad-word: i am spell bound but anyway take the sheet and puposefully write a piece of ugly nonsense code
Y: (looks at the code and sneers) i dont think this will work...
Me: it will work sir..
Y: well , what is DBMS
Me: (releived) tell him
Y: RDBMS?
Me: tell him
T:-ok tyagarajan , take your certificates,thank you
Y & S : all the best
Me: thank you (i rise)
S: have a biscuit
Me: i take the biscuit and walk out of the room holding it awkwardly in my hand...
didnt know what to make out of the interview...there were times when i gave crap rather than saying 'i dont know'..anyway i've managed to shelf it...waiting for my c interview.....
ok.. how deep into quant do u think theyre gonna get with me? im a BSc in stats with maths and stats as my subjects!

now im scared! ??:
Well, I don't really know how they B.sc stats candidates, but better be prepared coz u have a very relevant and useful background.
didnt know what to make out of the interview
All the best !

hi tdeepti,
i m from BSc Mathematics n m facing the prob as u...dont know how much math to prepare for the interview...as for now looking at the questions asked in int...i m preparing probability, linear programming, nacp n have done linear algebra too....dont know how many of these topics have u studied in ur course...if there s any other topic that u think they might quiz u on plz let me know...my int is on the 5th...when's urs???

hey divyas ,
are u by ne chance from math too?? i m askin coz they asked u fourier series n all??
At this point A closes the form I have given him Now he plays on my strength.
A:Ok what are types of probability distribtion
Explains well..
B: gives me a sort of case of smapling study and asks me to define some parameters.
me: Took some time and explained decently..
A: some more cross question
handled well mostly
B: You want to cross a river ask me for depth I'll tell you either mod, median or Mean what do you want.
me: I wouldn't like to bet my life on eithr of values.
Simles..
hi
cud you plz explain in detail wat your sampling prob was..n how u handled it...i m from math n m gonna say probability as my fav too...so wud get an idea as to wat sort of probs will i get in the int...??
hi tdeepti,
i m from BSc Mathematics n m facing the prob as u...dont know how much math to prepare for the interview...as for now looking at the questions asked in int...i m preparing probability, linear programming, nacp n have done linear algebra too....dont know how many of these topics have u studied in ur course...if there s any other topic that u think they might quiz u on plz let me know...my int is on the 5th...when's urs???
well as for maths im gonna do a bit of real analysis.. (im from mumbai univ and they really dont teach us so much... therefore the real analysis im talking about is pretty elementary tho we did it in SY)
in stats will def go thru probability and distribution theory... will do Operations Research (LP etc), stat inference (estimation, test of hypo etc).. regression, correlation... bit of sampling and design... bit of demographics, insurance etc... then we had some fundamental ecotrics.. will def go thru that.. in app stats we had loads of crap like genetics etc but im not planning t do it....
the bigger problem here is the fact that im doing my MSC part 1 in stats right now... therefore im required to like know still more which i dont! anyway hoping for the best
my interview on 17th march at mumbai
i dont know if ive done the right thing by replying on the forum instead of a PM.. but i guess since very few of us have this kind of background we may not get a general idea of the interview and how to prepare acads by reading others exp... this may help a bit...
sorry to all those bothered by it
all the best
