dude i had appeared for cfa l1, couldnt clear coz dint prep well. the course is basically for people working or who want to work in the investment business.. Inv Banking, equity research, portfolio mgnmnt all that stuff.. and yes, if you study MBA well, you will cover loads of stuff dere in the CFA syllabus but not all. hence if u want a career in that domain, CFA is a good option. but it is demanding too.. the prep i mean. and each exam costs 35k!
seniors can add more surely..

Yea.... if seniors can pour in some more it will be valuable...!!
folks.. there is a 'why finance?' thread on pg. some posts are really helpful. you could go there and see what aspirants are doing in other colleges!
well guys i went thorugh the entire 'why finance' thread and here is what i made out of it:
1. finance is a vast field offering a huge number of roles and profiles but obviously it is very tough for people not from top iims to get the most coveted ones or the most interesting ones. on the face of it our options are limited by the number and type of companies that visit for finance roles but a candidate can make all efforts to get a job of his choice. no ones stopping you there.
2. recruiting companies are impressed by your knowledge of fin and your passion for fin and what made you chose fin. in absence of either of the first two, bye bye dream job!
3. one can start reading any basic accounts book or fin man book or any other source to start learning basic concepts. it will obv help to start early. and there is a LOT of stuff on the net, for free!
4. there are also a number of certifications that one can go for.. a lot are there. they do help in profile building especally for ENGG+ IT dumasses who don no shit about fin (like me). but one has to be clear about his interests and future job prospects while chosing any certification program.
5. finance is interesting and involves a lot of hard work. its not just about number crunching. it involves soft skills as well.. i guess a lot depends on your job profile.
guys do come in with your views.. lets not kill this thread.
P.S. what am i missing on fb?
nice summing up
Hey guys Being an engg and then an It proffesional, I have ZERO knowledge of finance. Can any one recommend me some websites, from where i can gather the basic knowledge of finance

Hi all,
I will be reaching delhi on 19th June at 11 am. Basically, I'll be coming from Goa via Mumbai. It is an Air India flight which leaves Mumbai at 8:50 am (approx.). So, if anyone is travelling from Mumbai or reaching Dekhi at 11:00 am, then please contact me at 9881615676. We can then go together to IMT.

Hi Seniors,
I have read so much about IMT placements and that finance students still being unplaced.I have just one query regarding this. Is getting a good core finance profile the big problem ? I read somewhere that because of the absence of core finance profiles some students are unplaced.Does that mean that the students had got offers say from an IT firm and then had decided not to take it up or is it that the students have not yet received any offers and hence are unplaced?
It will help me immensely if seniors can clarify on this front. I don't have a particular inclination towards going into a core finance profile only. A good offer from an IT or a FMCG company will also do it for me.It will really help to soothe my nerves if you could clarify that the unplaced students had received offers elsewhere but due to personal choice had decided to wait for a better profile.
I hope you understand my anxiety and help me out in this regard.
Thank you so much for all the help that you have provided so far.
Yes.. getting a core Fin profile is tough.. bt getting into a IT firm is pretty easy.. There will be a lot of IT offers.. so need 2 worry.. just chill..

thanks saswat... what kind of profiles do IT firms provide? and what is the range of salary offered?
it would be nice if you could give a heads up on the profiles offered during internships as interviews would start in september itself.. we desperately need a clear picture to be mentally prepared atleast!
Most of them provide the role of Business Analyst with a compensation of around 8-12l depending on experience of the candidate.. There are huge no. of profiles and mostly will outdo the no. of students opting 4 such kind of profiles..
Hope this helps..

Hi Dr. Anshu,
Welcome to IMT-G. I don't know if it sounds good with a new joinee welcoming another joinee. Nevertheless, it would be interesting having a Dr. in the classroom. In case anyone falls sick, then Dr. Anshu will always be there:)
