and for rest, hard luck, life works in mysterious ways. Keep working hard, Everything happens for a reason, because of many reasons.
For Excise ones, Welcome to the department.
There are few things that you might be in doubt regarding the department. Some of them I hope, will get resolved through this post.
1) which is better iti or excise.
I know the working of both as my sibling is in income tax department. Excise Inspector is the best post you can get through cgle. This is what I have observed till now. You will never regret your decision that's for sure. In 3-4 years of service all Excise Inspectors become more or less same by working in all posts ( sensitive or non-sensitive)
2) Excise Structure.
Every zone is divided into commisonerates
for example here in Nagpur
a) Nagpur 1
b) Nagpur 2
c) Wardha commissionerate
d) Audit commissionerate (recently created as new commissionerate in every zone )
Posting can be in any commissionerate depending on requirement
it can be in audit, preventive branch, technical, range, division, service tax, and can be posted under CC,
3) Promotion
In training conducted by NACEN, Mumbai (Nation Academy of Central Excise & Narcotics) everyone was informed that within 8 years you would become superintendent and in 15-16 years of service, Assistant Commissioner. And that information was well surveyed and delivered. NACEN has all the data and research cell. (thanks to cadre restructuring). It is slightly slower than iti (2-3 years), but again we are grade B and have signing authority plus the dress with a cap made of single stitching, if wore, even every group A officer in cantonment salutes irrespective of stars . However khakhi is wore 3-4 times in year only. So no such significance. But believe me once you wear it, you will beccome more responsible and the change can be felt
4) Career Prospects :
Excise Inspector is one such post, that will increase your arena like nothing else. So many things to look into apart of taxation and cenvat rules. every service is under service tax except some negative lists.
for example I have audited 12 firms till now. all were different ranging from construction works, ispat, to coaching classes, electric works, electronics, chemicals, textile, civil and all.
Everything that Excise Inspector is responsible for, requires meticulous approach which leads to almost perfection, you deal with CAs and find mistakes in their work. ( so basically you beat CAs almost every time). apart from your work you deal with CEOs and Directors which helps you to know your people skills and how to interact with such persons. (ofcourse lunch in 5 stars is a plus point : P )
You get to know tip to toe of a company . how much it is growing. what is the salary of director and his expenditure. An inspector has power to ask anything including balance Form 26 AS issued by income tax. Moreover we look into income tax too, both department help each other to know what's the turnover and whether the tax deduction is harmonious or not.
I personally know 2-3 people who left job in 2 years , started business and beat the person who was in his range : D
Now, kaam ki baat. like I said, work is done meticulously, Excise Inspector has a big reputation. For example in DRI ( Directorate of Revenue Intelligence) which is a part of customs consists of 25% strength of customs and 75% of excise deptt ) . Customs mein data store jada nhi hota hai to they don't work much precisely. Whereas after some tenure. excise inspector is regarded as precise, sharp and up to the mark in things ( In Excise, everything is on paper, so he works diligently )
of course there is one Central Excise Intelligence , made from the excise staff. DRI and CEI are the best thing you can add to your career.
5) Leaves and Holidays - I have not taken a single leave till date, and believe me, even you won't take. Every day is like the best day of your life as something new will be there. ( Attendance - No one checks, welcome to deptt ) . Read CCS( CCA ) Rules 1965 , after reading you will be more than happy ( same for all central gov. employees).
