These are all questions you can get answers to through some research of your own. Start with Google, then narrow the search. Check out a little publication called America's Best Graduate Schools, published by US News and World report.

On work experience, GMAT or GRE (whether required / what scores), and scholarships, please consult the individual school / program website. All this should be your work.

Good luck

Hey thanks for the help..

i m also preparing for gmat.. cant find a route to abroad can somebody suggest me... some coaching centers,, for the preparation...

Happy New Year to you as well.

Profile is unusual, but not wierd at all. In fact, I wish more people would choose to go into industry before they think IT, Software etc...

From what little I see, you're fortunate to be in a product management, planning and development role at a very early age in your career. The opportunity for client (external) and x-functional (internal) interaction in this role are immense. The full value of such interactions would be realized when you work about 4-5 years because you will have gained:-

- a fair level of "Product" (generic) related skill in developing, planning for manufacture, and service delivery.
- expertise in the automobile industry in "the" market where several auto-majors want to establish footprint in the next 5-10 years
- Career progress, experience and seniority
- Given the product related knowledge and client interaction, a good springboard into areas like marketing, strategy, business / product development etc

I would recommend NOT worrying about education right now, and maximizing the value of your early career. Work for another 2-3 years, achieve career progress, transferable and applicable skills, and industry expertise that complemented with an education in Marketing, Strategy etc (specialized education or MBA) will be most valuable to your future employer. You enhance your chances of getting a great role and a career jump IF you present your future employer with a bag of transferable and immediately applicable skills alongside an education. These skills are less likely to be really applicable with the 2 years that you have.

As you also want marketing, but admit to being confused (this is normal), take the additional 2-3 years and firm up your career objective. Product planning, management and client focused product development can give you skills transferable to many other functions besides marketing.

Be patient, and take a long term view. Diligently save money, prepare & appear for the GMAT (or GRE as the case may require) in 2010, try and score 720+, then apply for a top notch school in 2012; education that would help you retain the best of your past, and arm you will skills and knowledge going forward.

All the best.

Thanks so much for the reply mate. One more query (apology 😉 ). I have an opportunity to switch departments. I may have an option to go in for

1.costing (i opted for it, as i have no prior experience in any finance related work)
2. International Business (Now this is what is influenced option. I have heard that multiple market exposures gives you an edge over others during application process)

To add on to the information, I got the performance reward from the company from among the group of 40 odd GTE that had joined (monetary benefit)

With so much confusion in mind & as of department change (too many avenues open) Please suggest any solution.

Regards,
Kev

Thanks again 😃

First and foremost - if you are passionate about Costing / Financial Control / Treasury and Corporate Finance, option 1 any day, unless option 2 is a financially oriented internation job (unlikely in junior levels of of the finance / controllership functions).

Multiple market / International experience gives you an egde if you are able to:

- (in the professional context) Acquire skills that are quickly transferable and applicable to another company

- (in the b-school application context) IF you are able to flawlessly and consistently articulate (in your MBA essay) why this international experience will help you in your MBA and in your career later on.

I'd say go for the International Business IF if it offers you the future opportunities to be on projects with an international scope, work with a broad set of cross-functional and international colleagues, and the chance for career progress - that you can clearly use 10-12 years down the line.

I know these things are difficult to analyze now, but think deeply about what functionally you want to do first, then worry about domestic or international business.

Cheerz & Good luck.

Hi,
i have completed my B.Com(X-88.2%,XII-82.2%,B.com- 83.5%)and have appeared for CAT and few other exams but i haven't performed well so i want to keep my options open since this time around i just have to join somewhere bcoz my situation is such that i cannot afford to wait for 1 more year.I know that the good universities abroad would prefer experienced candidates for an MBA course but the problem is that for this degree, there are no good job offers. Are there any recognised universities in UK that take in freshers?Am i eligible for 1 year courses like MSc Finance & Business Management or MSc International Business & Management in Bedfordshire University or any other university?i couldn't get clear-cut details from its website.the eligibilty criteria merely says a honours degree or an equivalent good degree required and there are no details about any entrance exam either.I'd be really glad if someone could help me out with this.
cheers,
Manjushaa

You couldn't get clear cut details because you didn't spend enough time researching. Go back and look at the major universities. To help you start, your B.Com degree will be recognized by major UK universities and yes, they will admit undergraduates without work experience to certain programs. UK Universities like London University (LSE, SOAS), Imperial College, City University (Cass), ICMA Univ of Reading, Lancaster University, Manchester University, Warwick etc....

Why are there no good jobs for B.Coms? What is the problem here? Even a relatively modest salaried job gets your work experience and I don't think you should shy away from it.

You're probably only 21-22.... why can't you wait for another year, why can't you be patient.

I realize I've asked you some questions, you don't have to answer me, but answer them for yourself.

Cheerz & All the best

Hi Mr. baccardisprite

This is one of the best threads i have read in PG. Kudos to your great advise over past couple of the years. I require some advise from you. Here are the facts and questions.

Background:
1. I am a B.E (2009 batch) and am currently employed at Nissan India, in R&D; division. Ofcourse, this is my first year at work.

2. I plan to do an M.B.A abroad in the next few years. Mostly, after 3 years of work experience(by 2012 I hope). Will be starting my GMAT preparations shortly too.

3. The M.B.A should help me attain a career as a Top level executive in Multinational firms involved in General Management functions, with focus on International operations and similar.

Questions:

1. Require your opinion on my general plan detailed above and your advise too...I would greatly value your opinion (even if they are questions to be answered by me)

2. Will some distance learning courses detailed in previous posts be useful to me in attaining my ideals?

3. Any strategies to be adopted by me?

THANKS A TON!...WAITING FOR YOUR REPLY

Firstly - R&D; profiles are more valuable than people give them credit for, so dont underestimate the skills, experience and progress you gain from this. Ensure you retain your knowledge by recording and (if / where possible) publishing your work, all of this knowledge is your intellectual property. Build your profile by sharing your knowledge internally with colleagues from other functions, in turn asking them to share their knowledge with you.

Secondly - why 3 years, why not 5-7 or 8? Point is, dont subject your professional (or even life) decisions to some time-line or deadline. Please use the years to learn, experience, upskill and progress FIRST, then think of augmenting all this with an MBA or whatever other education you choose to pursue. Do an MBA or anything else, when the time is right, NOT when youve simply completed x years.

Thirdly - Your post MBA employer will 75% consider your pre-MBA experience, and 25% your experience from a top school when thinking about you for a role in their company. You will be expected to earn your wings by proving yourself functionally (even after an MBA) and then managerially...

To answer your questions:

1) Top level exec in an MNC focusing on International Operations is vague at best. Like I said youll have to prove yourself functionally for 7-15 years depending on industry and company before getting anywhere close. So decide well before hand what function you want to build your major skills in, then what industry / type of company you want to work for, then your desired geography.

2) Depends, what do you want to do long term?

3) Dont worry about it now, too early. Just work, learn and progress for at least 4-5 years, get some achievements under your belt, then worry about b-school. Learn a foreign language along the way. In the automotive industry, learning German &/or Japanese might help !!!

Good luck

Thanks for the reply. I heard that US universities have a higher reputation. The only hurdle I found there was that only graduates with a solid work ex in finance went there or they already had their master's degree before getting admitted. So, I was looking for the ones that would take freshers and gave higher weightage to GMAT scores .
I listed down some of them ...plz comment on the list :
CMU, Columbia ,Vanderbilt , Villanova , Duke, Dartmouth , Kelley ...
Plz tel if any of them isn't worth applying to ..

I can't comment on whether its worth applying or not applying any where.

The UK universities have a good reputation, and the UK is generally more friendly towards Masters graduates wanting to stay in the UK and look for a job - which is currently quite difficult although things in London are not as bad as they were last summer.

In the US, you depend on the H1B, a lottery in the best of times, and almost impossible for the devastated (but now slowly recovering) financial services industry.

Why don't you want to work and get some experience so you can remove the hurdle of "solid work ex finance" that you describe above?
