International educational options beyond the MBA

@mbagirl2012

If you want to stay in Canada post the MBA (a good possibility given Canadian immigration policy for International Masters Graduates from Canadian Universities), then you're better off studying in Canada. Canadian schools, particularly Queen's, Schulich, Ivey and Rotman being the best known - are pretty good, but have neither the size, nor the international alumni base for you to conduct a networking enabled search in Asia. The distance is simply too great. You talk about the cost of a US MBA, but with the Canadian & US Dollars being almost on par, you're not saving much financially by not choosing to go to a US MBA.
..
If you want to work in Asia / India, you go either to a Top US MBAs (history, reputation, network, geographical reach and alumni number) OR to a Top Asian / Indian MBA (proximity to the job market you want to access, along with local or regional reputations & perceptions).
..
Why not INSEAD in Singapore, why not ISB or even a place like IIM (through CAT)? In the US, Kellogg, Michigan, UCLA, Columbia, would be the schools that would help with positioning you to the career you want.
..

Hi guys,

I need some quick suggestion. I have done BSC and post that MMS from Mumbai University from not so great institute. But post MMS I got a decent job with good profile in Equity Research and have by now accounted for 3 yrs of work ex. Currently I am working with a well-known Investment bank on Research side. I also gave my CFA L1 in Dec 2012 and awaiting the results. I plan to give my L2 in June 2013 hopefully if I clear L1.

I was considering doing MS finance from US universities or an MBA from ISB in 2014 but I am not sure which one should I weight more. Can you guys please help? Also both the course shall require GMAT as entrance so I need to start preparing for it. Any cursors as to how should I start? Thanks in Advance.

@baccardisprite so shall i continue my bachelors in india it self..... and plan my mba ,some where in a good and reputed place??

very much thank u for your rply......
@badi

Bachelors in India! Then CAT for a good Indian MBA. If you want to however learn something acquire some skills, work for a few years after the Bachelor's Degree, then go for an MBA.

What after an MBA? In what type of company? Geography? What's the chief motivation to leave a good job now?

Hey

@baccardisprite

First my profile
.X-93%
.XII-94.5% /B.Tech(EEE)-7.14 CGPA

Work ex: 1.5 years in a leading switch gear company
Sales and Marketing ,met deadlines improved sales of a product by 200%

Currently M.tech in "Technology &Development; " at IIT Bombay.
the branch deals with rural development, has a 10 week field stay and is involved with NGOs
work in the area of water, energy etc.
flipside- NO PROPER PLACEMENTS!!

Do you suggest I continue the course? does it help in M.B.A or should I drop it and join some company like a P.S.U?

Or should i go for masters in M.S in Engg Management.

I'm not very specific about M.B.A but I would like to somehow correct the error that I made choosing this branch where the opportunities are very bleak.

Awaiting your suggestion..

Hi, I am Tushar. I got an admit in the Engineering and policy analysis program at TU Delft, Netherlands. Does anybody have any info regarding the course, its job prospectus in europe or any other country. Any additional info would be helpful.

Hi baccardisprite, I forgot to mention that I have 1.5 years exp at IBM. Can you please provide some feedback on the EPA program at TU Delft as I have to finalize the universities. I am interested in consultancy and hence I applied at this program.

Hello Baccardisprite,

I need little help in shortlisting of Business schools for my MBA.

My profile
WE: I will have 6 years of work ex by June 2013 with 2 months in Eastern Europe. I currently work as a Technical consultant in a Finnish - German telecommunications vendor giant. Have good experience leading team for project implementation - Mobile network deployment.

Key words
Team Lead. Subject Matter Expert. Single Point of Contact.

Undergrad
Taught soft skills to junior in undergrad, member of placement cell.

GMAT
600, 610,630,630 (Sept 2012), not giving again.

Additional info
Orange belt in Lean Six sigma, will try for black in April 2013. Learning French, giving DELF A1 in March 2013. Plan to get PMP by Aug 2013.

Post MBA: Wishing to work in Operations / Service Management sector.

During MBA: need a solid General Management program, with focus on Operations & finance, lots of experiential component and if possible few international trips / exchange.

My shortlist & status so far:
College of William & Mary, VA: (reapplicant) Interview next week
Sauder - UBC, Canada: applied
HEC Montreal, Canada: in process
McGill, Canada: applied
Queen's Canada: Thinking
John Molson: Thinking
ESSEC: Thinking

Prior to 2012
Schulich India: Admit but didn't join
SP Jain 1 year PGPM - Mumbai: Admit and deferred
Copenhagen Business School: Admit but didn't join

Please suggest some schools (keeping in mind my GMAT score of 630) with good focus in Operations / General Management having experiential component and diverse students.

I am open for US/France/Canada/EU

Budget: Not a problem for international brand, but for localized experience it has to be less than 55K ~ 60k USD in total.

I thought of applying to the likes of Ross, NUS, Ohio - Fisher, CMU Tepper, Purdue, Smeal, HEC Paris but I just ain't competitive for them.

Moore - SC, Thunderbird - AZ, SDA Boconni - Italy, Rutgers - NJ, Rotman - Canada, ESSEC - France also crossed my mind, but these programs seems to be charging more for the experience they offer.

Do help
Ayon
Hello baccardisprite !

I've completed my B.E. civil last year.

Here is my profile

10th- 72% (Karnataka State Board)
12th- 73% (Karnataka State Board)
Engineering- 7.4/10 (Visvesvaraya Technological University)
Work ex: Part time- 8 months as coordinator at a construction company. Full time- from August 12' till present at the same place
IELTS: 7.0 (L: 7.5 | R:8 | W:6.5 | S:6)
GMAT: Not attempted
Career Aspirations: The company I'm working for is my dad's company. It is a real estate development company. My dad wants me to takeover the business eventually and I want to join as early as possible. Gaining work ex and then leaving for MBA is practically impossible, I feel. It would be very difficult to get out once I'm into business. Here's what I plan to do.

1. I'm interested in doing MBA from a good uni in UK. But I don't have the work ex. There are a few unis which accept freshers for MBA but I'm told that they are not so prestigious.
Here are the unis which accept freshers:

Cardiff University
West London College (Heriot-Watt)
University of Buckingham
Liverpool John Moore University
Cardiff Metropolitan University
University of Wales, Newport
London School of Business & Finance
Bangor University
Coventry University London
University of Aberdeen
University of Stirling

2. Another option is M.Sc Management. I'm interested in these unis:

Imperial College Business School
London School of Economics and Political Science
City University: Cass
Warwick Business School
Aston Business School
University of Strathclyde Business School
University of Bath School of Management
Bradford University School of Management
Lancaster University Management School
Durham University Business School
University of Edinburgh Business School
Manchester Business School
Leeds University Business School

3. The last option is MBA from Symbiosis Institute of Business Management- Pune, India

What would you suggest? MBA from not so prestigious unis or M.Sc from prestigious unis or MBA from SIBM? Please suggest according to my career aspirations.

I'm not looking for a job. I just want exposure which would help me expand my business and give it a corporate look. Budget is not a problem.

I'd be very grateful for your help

Thank you.

Had a dilemma as to what I should do.

I've been working for just over a year since graduating. A year at a bulge bracket in Global Markets and now in Group Finance at another leading global bank.

I've got an offer to study a dual degree from MDI and ESCP.

Would studying at MDI be a sensible thing to do given my work experience? By the time I start on the course I would have had 18-20 months work experience at leading banks in New York and London. Would MDI allow me to change fields and go into Management Consulting given the MDI programme is a general management programme?

Would I be better off going to Warwick Business School (MSc Finance) or potentially IE business school (MiM). Please advise.

Hi baccardisprite

I really appreciate the work you are doing here.
Now my story. I graduated from a premier engg college as Computer science engineer in 2006. Joined TCS and worked there till Jan 2009. Joined family business then which is a manufacturing unit with an annual turnover 1.5 cr (MSME).
Now I am thinking of shutting down this business because in these four year I have realised that its a very unprofessional and unethical business environment and no matter How hard I try I can't survive in this environment.
So thinking of higher education, the biggest issue I am facing is that I can not afford a two year mba, because I am already 29 years old and cant devote so much time for studies. And for One year mba, what I have learned is its good for people who want to progress in their current profile and not for people who want to switch their career entirely.
Most of the people aspiring for MBA often talks about deciding what to do post MBA. But right now what I am thinking is I should take the career which justifies my six years of work experience and not starting from scratch. Though strategy and consulting entices.
So i you can please share your two cents about my situation it would be really helpful and if you can suggest any alternative path other than MBA.

Xth - 89%
XIIth- 79.2%
B.tech - 3.6/5
Gmat - 700 (July 2008)

P.S. sorry for treating you like agony aunt :)

Why not apply to the MSc Real Estate programme at CASS And Cambridge?

Why not apply to the MSc Real Estate programme at CASS And Cambridge?
First of all, thank you for showing interest and replying to my query.

I did think about it, but I'm interested in general management. M.Sc real estate is a specialization which is really good for me given my career aspirations. But apart from real estate, there are some other businesses as well in which I'm interested. I feel that general management would help me.

Moreover, Cass and Cambridge are too difficult to get into. I honestly feel I don't stand a chance

My friends are telling me to go for the university rather than the course because the university practices have a huge impact on the student.

Today I met a professor who teaches in one the famous colleges in Pune. He told me that the UK MBA/M.Sc are not preferred in India as they are of 12 months duration. He suggested me to for SIBM.

I'm totally confused

Here's my M.Sc research report. Please comment

If you want to do the MSc Management in the UK, do it at Imperial. Whilst the course might not be as intensive as other courses Imperial is a strong brand. Look at the careers report, nearly all students get top jobs, with many getting multiple job offers - that shows the caliber of students is high. At the end of the day you want a brand that will support your company don't you? It doesn't come much stronger than the Imperial brand (overall university not business school).

@ashmole2009

Imperial's entry requirement is 7.5 CGPA. Mine is 7.4
My MSc report is based on the FT MiM rankings. I've included only those universities I'm eligible for. The entry requirements are based on IELTS & GMAT scores. The universities which aren't in the list either have higher IELTS band score or require GMAT, which I don't want to write. I'm tired of aptitude tests.

I'm more inclined towards the Strathclyde MBM programme. It has an upgrade option. MBM can be upgraded to MBA after 3 years by studying some extra subjects at the universty.

Strathclyde is a big brand too.

Hi,
I am working as a assistant manager with nationalized bank, done BE in computer science .I want to settle down in Australia, but confused abt the course to purse there so that i can get the job after that. I heard that, MBA from AUS got no value as there is no demand for MBAs. is it true?? suggestion for any job oriented finance course in aus ??

@karthik09

Have you tried searching for a job yourself or are you simply expecting the jobs to come to you in the form of "placements"? IIT-B has a huge alum network and professors have contacts. Go out and search for a job! Don't just give up.

No, I don't think it's appropriate to leave the current M.Tech program. No adcomm of any program worth its salt will believe or welcome your story of leaving a program that has no proper placement. Secondly - the "no proper placement" is a conclusion you could have well investigated and drawn before starting the program.....

Think!

All the best
