International educational options beyond the MBA

@ayonde

Interesting to note that the schools you declined or deferred admission offers from, are the same class / reputation / tier as the schools you seem to have chosen for the next wave of applications (that you want me to comment on); the exception being Queen's Canada. If you didn't choose to attend the 1st set of schools, what makes you believe you'll happily attend any of the others (barring Queens)???

Have you sought / taken professional assistance to improve your GMAT scores or have you simply made 4 attempts? Your score pattern seems to suggest the latter. If so, recommend you get some professional help (write to psychodementia, a prominent poster on these forums). You must try and score 700+ to have a good chance of at least an admissions interview in a top notch school. Your articulation and writing ability (have seen your posts) + your profile & story suggest you'll be able to swing one of those interviews into a firm offer of admission.

Sorry to be harsh, but you're working for a company (I know the name) that's a huge brand. Given this experience, impact and skills and potential you bring to your future employer, must you choose 2/3rd tier schools based purely on where you get in and not based on where you want to be?

I sense acceptance, NOT aspiration in your post.

See a set of postings between a guy called nishant1309 and myself about 4-5 thread pages previously on this thread.

Think and post again.

Forget these universities and work with your dad for a few years. Help him grow, win business and customers, help him manage cash, profits, revenue, capital and investments. Deal with customers and consumers on a daily basis. You get all this for free + any salary he's paying you.

5-6 years down the line, when you've achieved something and fulfilled a deal with your dad, ask him to let you go for 1-2 years with a promise that you will return!

All the best.

Stay on the job and gain experience. People of your age are dying to get a profile like yours. Learn, gain skills and experience both your future employers (example - Consulting firms) and their clients will most value....
You're in a good place! Stay there, thank your blessings and continue learning and up-skilling.

I'll help you, but will coach you through it rather than merely advise you. Reason - I want you to realize your own potential rather than my having to specifically instruct you (won't play agony aunt to you :-).... So let's start:

If you went searching for a job right now:

a) What 1-2 functions can you best perform and why (think about what you learnt)?
b) In what industry and in what type of company (give me examples) do you think you could perform these functions?

Then....

a) What 1-2 functions do you WANT to perform and why?
b) In what industry and in what type of company (give me examples) do you want to perform these functions?

Once you answer, we'll come back to your first set of questions.

@agiri

Clearly you're getting poor (no context) advice around the value of an MBA. Explain what you do functionally, and what you want to do functionally? Let's get into educational options after.

@baccardisprite Hello,

I am happy to be having this conversation with you.
Since you already know which company I am working in, let me tell you that it is not doing well on a global scale, nor is my industry.

CBS: I applied to Copenhagen (CBS) because at that time, my company was doing good, and there were several openings in Scandinavian region, there were several openings that were forcasted. CBS has a strong reputation in the region, I thought at that time that it would be a good idea to change my job function into a generalist role out my my technical role in telecommunication, which is limited by company, (If I join another similar company, their systems are 100% different), technology in telecomm is also limited by time, (whats new today is obsolete tomorrow, and moreover the footprint is reducing, and revenue generated is constant. All in all, the future is not pure Telecommunications, but Over The Top (OTT) and IP related tech......anyways coming back to point. Company went kaput! and laid off 17,000 jobs. most notably in Scandinavia & EU.

CBS became a high risk option with fees close to 300,000 Danish Kroners. Copenhagen is also the 3rd costliest in the world and Danish is very tough to learn. CBS might have offered me scholarship, but limited to max of 30%. But it was still very costly and risky.

Schulich India: I applied to their main program, but was invited for India program. After getting admit, I investigated more, and found that it lacks diversity. 16 month program and no internship was also not to my liking. Few of my known friends, joined the program but could get a 1 year PR only as compared to few others who joined and got a 3 year PR. Needless to say, People who got 1 year PR were at disadvantage even when competing with other grads from Schulich India and Schulich flagship program. Not to mention that Rotman was giving stiff competition from the downtown.

SP Jain: Lack of diversity. I believe that life is a set of varied experiences. Both SPJain and Schulich were lacking diversity. I talked to several current students in SPjain, and to several HR people in industry, they don't recognize the 1 year PGPM program.

I understand that my second wave of application is also 2 Tier colleges, but those colleges are not in India, and not flooded by Indian & Chinese students. I believe that they provide diversity and fit my bill. Moreover, after graduation i will have some chance of a global career. Graduating from SPJain PGPM, I would have most likely found myself at the similar crossroads questioning the usefulness of my education.

I posted here to ask about MORE schools that I could apply, given my preferences. I have applied to College of William & Mary, UC Irvine, McGill, Sauder UBC, HEC Montreal, ESSEC Global MBA, Queens.

I liked their curriculum content, class composition, and possible career impact. For French schools I have already started to learn French, and will give DELF A1 by March and A2 by August.

I thank you for having faith in my potential and advising me to improve my GMAT, but if I had 700+ score, I won't apply to Ohio Fisher, Purdue, Smeal etc. I would rather apply to the likes of Ross, CMU etc. I firmly believe that because of pure supply of indians with higher GMAT. mid ranked colleges use them to improve their class profile and thus, their rankings. I have been personally told by adcoms from Smeal / Olin / Purdue / HEC Paris after just knowing my GMAT, years of work ex, graduation major and current industry, that I am not competitive. Boost my GMAT by 100 points or switch my passport with Estonian and I become competitive. Do both and I become competitive at top 15. You may call that grapes are sour. and they ARE. But I can no longer be a part of this senseless rat race to score more on the GMAT. If GMAT is that important and so critical, why don't B schools measure it on graduation? They will come to know if the education imparted by them made students smarter in aptitude of not. Anyways, I am again straying into tangents.

Coming back, I am married and my parents will retire soon, I also wish to settle and start a family. Due to my personal considerations. I would rather invest my energy in other things. E.g. Learning a language, getting PMP, Black Belt in Six Sigma. I am not aiming INSEAD in anycase, nor dream of McKinsey to recruit me. I simply wish to experience a different life experience among students whose experience will enrich my learning experience. I am also careful that the schools I have selected will have at least some positive impact on my career trajectory.

Perhaps its a sign of Acceptance and not Aspiration, but maybe, I am just being realistic. I'll be grateful if you could suggest me some colleges wherein I could apply (if there are any such colleges)

Parameters:
1) Diversity of students
2) Experiential component
3) Value for money
4) Some impact on career. Though very subjective issue, it simply means that strength in Operations / General Management and some reputation amongst recruiters.
5) Some International experience

P.S.
I deleted Thunderbird, Moore, ESADE, Katz, SDA , Vlerick and the likes from my list, because of their minimal impact on career and/or lack of exclusivity and/or I felt that their fees was too high for the experience that they provide and similar experience was captured by the colleges i have already applied.

Have a good week!
Ayon

Thank you

@baccardisprite !

But I was not looking for that answer :p

Its very difficult to leave business. I'm already enjoying work so much that I want to drop the study plans altogether! But I know that I need some business education as the competition is very high in this business.

Please help.
Hi @baccardisprite

First of all thanks for really helping me out or better mentoring me.
It took a lot of time and introspection to answer your queries, mostly because I am not really aware of the opportunities in the corporate world and how to measure my work ex in the corporate world.

a) What 1-2 functions can you best perform and why (think about what you learnt)?

i)Based on my current work experience , I believe there is one function which I can perform efficiently is Operations. Specifically operations in a manufacturing industry. Due to dynamic n nature of a small manufacturing unit , there are issues that needs to be resolved every week if not daily. And also because of four years spend in engg college, operations is the thing that attracts me, its like solving puzzles.

ii)Analysing business model of an industry - The complete ownership of the company made me understand how different functions of the organisation work together and affect each other. It taught me to analyse the macroscopic as well as the microscopic effect of the different scenarios in the business.

b) In what industry and in what type of company (give me examples) do you think you could perform these functions?
i) Automobile and white good industry are the two industries which I have dealt with during my current occupation. So in these two industries I believe I can work. But I think I.can work in any manufacturing industry which is not manufacturing advanced engineering goods something like Intel.
Examples are lg, whirlpool, maruti, Honda and may be P&G;,Unilever

ii) Other type of industry could be analytics/ consulting which studies studies different Industry and create reports on them or provide Analysis according to client requirements. Example would be ZS associates, DeShaw and may be some small boutique consulting firms .

a) What 1-2 functions do you WANT to perform and why?
I want to have a career in Management consulting - To analyse a new business for a company who wants to diversify its portfolio or to help in improving the current operations of a company or resolve the issues an organisation is currently facing. The reason for choosing a management consulting is out of finance, HR, Sales and marketing, general management. This is the the only field I can relate myself to.

b) In what industry and in what type of company (give me examples) do you want to perform these functions?
Industry and company I would like to start my career in a general management consulting firm which are working on different industries and eventually moved to an industry which I liked while working in the consulting firm.
Examples would be BCG, Bain, Accenture

I contemplated too much before posing this reply because my answers sounds like what mostly every MBA aspirant career goal look like. So waiting for your insights.

Thanks

If your goal is BCG/Bain, then just make sure you go to LBS/Insead in Europe or a top 10 school in the US.
Sharing for those who might not have read the series, an alum of IIM Indore's one year full time MBA (EPGP) has been writing in the Business Standard on the one year mba in India.

While the focus of his series is the course as it exists at IIMs, I think it speaks volumes for all all such courses in India and can be helpful to all students looking to pursue a one year MBA in India.

Thought i would share with fellow puys.

Lol students with 5+ years work experience only get 3 more lakhs on average at IIM Indore than the 2 year course? Pretty bad...

I do have valid point though. Why do students with so much more work experience only receive a slightly higher salary post-MBA?

"In step with the best in the world"? Highly questionable...
@ashmole2009 suit yourself. my idea was to inform you, not engage you in a debate. Please do that on your own time and with other ashmoles.

Pipe down mate, I was merely pointing out something I noticed.
@ashmole2009 cool man. no issues. love your choice of words though. pipe down ashmole. nice.
@doublepagalguy & Ashmole2009,

Thank you both for your posts on this thread. It takes several years for a program to establish enough credibility in a job market for employers to offer the right salary differentials to people of varied experience, skills and competencies.

While the INR 3-5L (between a 0 experienced and a 5-6 year experienced pre-MBA) might appear small straight out of school, the 4-5 years immediately after graduation are crucial for the MBA graduate to prove one-self in order to gain the right jump. As someone who has gone through the mill (8 years pre-MBA, then MBA, then into a job), it's normally the 2nd/3rd job / assignment after an MBA that really brings the opportunity for the career (and yes, salary) jump that most aspire to.

All the best, both of you.

@baccardisprite

Hi

I will be giving my GMAT in June, 2013. I intend to apply for the MiM programs of HEC Paris and ESSEC France in early 2014. I am utterly confused though. I get a feeling that I have a matching profile so I am getting anxious. I want to know the kind of profiles that get selected. What is their mean Indian GMAT score? What are the profiles they prefer? Does having a particular profile add any advantage?

My Profile:
3rd year in Comp Engg from NSIT, DU(in case you didnt know, it ranks over DCE)
below avg on academic score - 63%.
Internship in 3 start ups(2 months each) (1 business development, 2 indirectly related to finance).
Social work through a college organization(1.5 yrs)
Social work through a separate internship in an NGO(0.5 yrs).
Two "Cerified" courses on finance through coursera. (just incase it helps)
MUNs(not very important though, will probably exclude them)
Head of School Athletic Team for 2 yrs(included this to showcase leadership since school)

PS:Still looking for a "Branded" internship (have been advised to "complete my profile" through a branded one)
I can also include small insignificant stuff like fests and events.
...and trying to publish a number of articles on social stuff on a reputed youth website.

Ofcourse a lot depends on my GMAT too but still I'd like to know if I stand anywhere in competition to calm myself down and focus on GMAT.

Talking about essays and interviews, I can greatly expound upon my social work experience

Please reply(really anxious).

Digvijay.

Hello Bacardi, I am an Architect from India and have passed out in 2009. In 3 years I have worked in a variety of scenarios of small village based NGOs to corporate builders firms. It let me understand what €˜building €™ means to different sections of the society.
I want to start my own construction company in future and think a management degree would give me the right break into the international scenario. I am looking to do an MBA for 2 reasons, it would give me an exposure into the industry on an international level and I would like to understand more on the business end of construction companies by working in them post MBA. Which do you think are the schools that I can aim for?
Also, are there any International courses that I can take up beyond MBAs..?
