Hi All,
I have been doing extensive research on 1 year MBA in india for the last 6 months. I am a CA and have 9 yrs of experience in Ibanking & PE ( M&A;). I have not seen a single MBA program( 1yr) that places students into Ibanking. I spoke to alumns at IIMs(A/B/C), SPJ(PGPM) , XL (GMP) and also checked their placement stats but never found any top PE/I banking/HF hiring. Yes I know that a typical I bank/PE job is through intership( i also worked and grew from analyst program), but isn't there any lateral placement?
Some Alumns told me that I banks refuse to come for 1 yr programs beacuse of the lack of quality of students( Fin background) and past experience( Ibanks/PE) . I can understand that as 75-80% of the people at almost all top schools in India are from IT background and are interested in consulting . A typical Ibank - M&A; company may not be interested to hire and train someone with 5+ yrs of exp in IT.
Iam a future applicant to these schools and was wondering is it worth leaving a well paid job( higher than the avg of any of 1 yr MBA school in india) and not getting into a desired role/comp. I know MBA has long -term benefits and shouldn't be taken as a placement agency, but if your dream companies don't come to the placement at all , does it make any sense to apply at all? No matter how much we deny, we can't escape the placement madness.
Appreciate your responses. ISB is probably the only school where top Ibanks come but I doubt on the roles they hire for.
Thanks
PS: I am not talking about Indian Investment banks/PE (ICICI, AXIS, avendus.BMR, SBI Caps,Kotak PE)

Hi Sudhir,
Yep - its true that there is a dearth of Ibanking jobs in the 1 year programs. They don't even visit IIM A/C 1 year programs. The opportunities that they offer at ISB are at entry level positions (had checked these with the Admissions team rep of ISB). Most of the Ibanks follow the Analyst/Associate/VP Heirarchy model and unless you have sufficient RELEVANT exp, they do not hire you at VP level.
Thats the reason why people with higher experience apply for Consulting roles in both ISB/IIM 1 year programmes or leverage on the Alumni network for Ibank roles.
Btw, the Admission team rep had mentioned that they were currently working on an Internship model to be incorporated into the 1 year program so that they can attract Ibanks into the campus. They were supposed to implement this model starting from 2014 batch, but I do not see any mention of this in the ISB website. Looks like the model didnt fall in place.
cheers,
Shyam
P.S: I had read your profile on the ISB 2014 Aspirants thread and I strongly feel that you should apply for INSEAD as well.
