This question has been answered several times in this thread....
The answer is unfortunately NO

This would be an extensive answer - and since i just started work, I am unable to spare the time to answer this question. Why don't you put it to me again when I am done with my summers (in early September?)
Hi,
Could someone shed some light as per his/her personal opinion on moving into Securitized Products Research (RMBS/ABS/CMBS etc) from Structuring desk (1 year experience in Structuring desk).
My thoughts: Want to see the research side (recommendations/strategy etc), experience a different asset class rather than spanning the same asset class for some more time (since its stuck and not heading anywhere from the current structuring profile).
How would it reflect on the resume having accrued experience in two very different profiles/two very different asset classes?
Thanks. (Looking forward to Jamiro, if not anyone else, since my query went unnoticed in almost all threads! :P)
Thx jamiroquai...
god bless u

Am unable to respond because I do not have securitized structuring experience. However, on my floor, the associates in securitized products are from Wharton. I could always speak to them once the summer is done to get an insight into a response to your question
Hi Jamiroquai,
Thanks for the sharing valuable time & post here. I have a situation here.
Passed out of tier-3 b-school in India. Worked in CRISIL for a couple of years. Swithed to a local boutique & working there as an analyst raising private equity. What are the chances of moving up in middle market banks (Lazard. At least ICICI, HSBC etc.. Forget abt GS & JPM)
I am already working in a regional boutique. Of course deal size is way small may be 15-20 million USD compared to multi billoon USD deals executed by BB banks. I have following doubts in my mind:
- Rebranding: Doing 1 year Exec-MBA. How much will it help in landing at a larger bank with a large dealflow?
- Networking: Does intense networking help for moving up from a smaller boutique to a larger bank (at least middle markets i mentioned) esp. when you are not from a target school?
Thanks again for your time

This depends on the school and its connect with alums. Campus placement from 1-year programs is usually very feeble.

When you're not from a target school, the effect of your networking decreases significantly. If you've done significant work as a PE analyst, you might be able to squeeze your way into a larger firm. However, your handicap is your school. And you need to figure out a way to overcome it.
this might be irrelevant , i'm looking for an e-book "advanced bond portfolio management by frank j. fabozzi pdf " , pl. help.(tried torrents & net search )
hi i just wanted to know what exactly does they mean by saying that you would be supporting the onsite team of IBanking, is it really a good profile to workon for 3 years and then they might send you to the onsite team or so called front end.
how about a profile called as a credit analyst in comparision to an analyst in an IBank on the backhand side. which one would you rate better, and which has a better future, could you just explain it to me plzzzzz
Hi Jamiroquaim
Firstly, like all others, I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for starting this thread.
I understand from the previous few posts that you have started work and it would be tough to find time.
I demand just one minute of your time brother. I am at the threshold and have an interview coming, any time now( its telephonic, and I am expecting it asap)
I have just graduated,( a week back) from Delhi University. I did B.Com (Hons)m specializing in Investment and Finance in my final year. I have average acads, like..an average of 65 % in three years ( but I have seen seniors working in Lazard who had a similar percentage), but then, they came from an SRCC :)
I studied at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce, which is regarded as one of the best in academics, but not as popular with he recruiters, coz its a 25 year old college, compared with others, who are there since 120 years.
To cut the story short, I have done a lot of extra curriculars. Worked at AIESEC, led an international team of 15 people, have done around 10 internships during my undergraduation, won a lot of competitions, founded investment based societies, etc, etc( Please spare just 10 seconds to 'just glance' through this link --- Akshay Chaturvedi | LinkedIn ....this would give you a better picture of my profile and I can get better advice, for which I will be extremely grateful!)
I have been recruited at the backoffice of KPMG, which is paying me 13,000 for being an Audit Analyst.
Meanwhile, I received a call from Ernst & Young (front office) for their investment banking division, that is, Transaction Advisory. I read up heaps about it and have become very keen to it. I will pay 20 - 25,000 at an Analyst leve, but I will have to relocate to Mumbai from Delhi. How do you perceive this? Will working here help me get closer to that dream investment banker profile?
Also, I have an interview (telephonic), anytime now, I would be really grateful if you could pour in some advice. I have networked a lot with investment bankers in general to gain knowledge about the industry. I also spoke with people in the Transaction Advisory team, who told me I shudn think of the money and that its great experience.
Just to add,I am thinking of pursuing CFA (US),confused between giving December or June attempt. I want to pursue an MBA from ISB or INSEAD, Thats my dream.
Your advice is deeply appreciated and it will help me get closer to my dreams. Thank you so so much brother!!
Great thread guys!! Possibly one of the most knowledgeable threads on PG.
I'm a final year student at IIT Delhi.Cleared CFA L-1 last year and since then have developed a keen interest in finance.I have secured a job as a Derivatives trader at a Prop firm. I have some specific questions in mind.
My aim is to end up as a buy side equity research analyst and then maybe transition to a portfolio manager role someday.I'm really into fundamental value investing and an admirer of the Buffetts and Lynchs of the financial world. From what i have heard and learned most of the buy side analysts come from Sell side ER or IB.Rarely do traders end up as equity analysts. My questions are :
1.What do you guys think about ER?What is the status of Sell side ER in India?.Top firms,Exit opportunities etc.
2.Can i get a job in ER with just My Bachelors or is an MBA a prerequisite?
3.'Moolah' as compared to IB?
4.This is a question to Jamiroquai : I also plan to pursue an MBA from US in about 3-4 years time.
(i) How is trading work experience viewed by adcoms?
(ii) What do you think of Middle office Risk Management roles at BB (DB,CS etc.)? I might be able to get in one of these.Would it be better than Trading workex?
(iii) What according to you was the most important factor responsible for your Cornell admit?
Thanks
Hi Jamiroquaim
...
My responses are going to be brief since I am not checking PG much while I am working in NYC over this summer.
My advice: Take TAS - move to Mumbai. Work there for 2 years before applying to ISB. INSEAD is solid for consulting, not so much for banking because european banks don't hire non euro language speakers (it sucks, doesn't it?)

1. strong, if you want to go back into trading
2. depends on what you want to get into eventually
3. no single one factor can be pinpointed as most important
1. What if i want to get into buy side research?? Would'nt sell side ER be better. My eventual aim is to end up as a PM.
2.Same as 1.Where do risk managers end up after an MBA?
3.Any pointers regarding IB vs ER (Sell side) : Exit opps, work culture ,fit etc.Is ER really a dying industry?
Thanks
Nice informative thread. Great initiative.

I'm not conversant with the career path for equity research. And I don't think anyone who knows any finance could ever say that research is anywhere close to dying...

Thanks a lot brother! i think that would be the way to go then : )) .. And yeah, this INSEAD part really sucks..

Had an hour long interview at the Gurgaon office. As I was well prepared, my interview was killer! They were ready to take me right there, but said they will get back with all the formalities.
I contacted the Mumbai team and they said that I havn been selected. The Gurgaon team, who had interviewed me for the Mumbai position had no clue about it. Incidentally, the mail which said I have not been selected was sent to me and the Gurgaon team as well.
Got in touch with a friend and he said, its very simple, "client ki jugaad lag gayi" ..
I dun have much options now. Have a KPMG Internal Audit job in hand, where I would be required to work at its backoffice . Secondly, I might get an interview with McKinsey Knowledge Center, thats the back end unit of McKinsey.
Please help. What to do now? I really do not want to let my dream of becoming an investment banker go away. I am determined to be one!!!
