Hi Jamiroquai
A big cheers for giving this thread with great insights on IB.
I dont know whether a similar query has been already posted. Sorry if I am repeating the same kind.
I had just now finished my bachelors degree (BE mechanical).
I am very much inclined towards IB and intending to do an MBA next year.
I have an offer from an automobile firm. Having said that I am very much confused whether to accept the offer or not. Should I look at IB training programs in some indian investment firms if available?
Since I have no academic finance background I would like to appear for CFA level I by next june. I would like to know would if it be a real value addition for my profile if I am solely looking at investment banking would it help me understand finance better at the B school. Is it a mandate for me without any academic finance background?
Thank you.
A BIG Thanks to jamiroquai for starting and successfully continuing this thread!!!
One of the most useful threads on PG!!!

i went through every single page of the thread. It had answer for all my qs. Will join the company for now and in mean time will start my preparations for CFA L1. And hopefully wil make to to ABC next year . And thanks a lot again for all who made this thread so much informative. Special thanks to Jamiroquai and echoes7.
Am checking this thread after a long time - good to see it's still up and running. I am done with my internship, back to campus and would most probably be taking up the offer of a full-time position in Investment Banking from next year :)
After the whole internship process, I guess I would now be in a better position to answer your queries regarding it!
Had an hour long interview at the Gurgaon office. As I was well prepared, my interview was killer! They were ready to take me right there, but said they will get back with all the formalities.
I contacted the Mumbai team and they said that I havn been selected. The Gurgaon team, who had interviewed me for the Mumbai position had no clue about it. Incidentally, the mail which said I have not been selected was sent to me and the Gurgaon team as well.
Got in touch with a friend and he said, its very simple, "client ki jugaad lag gayi" ..
I dun have much options now. Have a KPMG Internal Audit job in hand, where I would be required to work at its backoffice . Secondly, I might get an interview with McKinsey Knowledge Center, thats the back end unit of McKinsey.
Please help. What to do now? I really do not want to let my dream of becoming an investment banker go away. I am determined to be one!!!
Working in a back-end currently is not a bad thing - build up your work profile and try to excel in whatever you do. As pointed out many times in this thread, target a very good B-school for an MBA and then find opportunities from there. Please go through the rest of the posts in this thread for more details.
Hi,
Could someone shed some light as per his/her personal opinion on moving into Securitized Products Research (RMBS/ABS/CMBS etc) from Structuring desk (1 year experience in Structuring desk).
My thoughts: Want to see the research side (recommendations/strategy etc), experience a different asset class rather than spanning the same asset class for some more time (since its stuck and not heading anywhere from the current structuring profile).
How would it reflect on the resume having accrued experience in two very different profiles/two very different asset classes?
Thanks. (Looking forward to Jamiro, if not anyone else, since my query went unnoticed in almost all threads! :P)
There should be no harm at all moving from Structuring to ABS Research. You have not mentioned if you have been working on ABS Structuring itself or some other Structuring desk. Many I-banks do rotate analysts within different desks so that they get a feel of different things.
However, Structuring and Research are part of the Markets division of the bank which is different from core IBD. A Markets person would be able to answer you better.
hi,
I am working as an engineer in a navratan psu, which is a purely technical job. Considering my technical background and finance(i will be losing 2 yrs. salary and investing 14 lacs in MBA), would it be suitable to do mba in finance from a top institute(such as IIM,XLRI,FMS..) after having an experience of 3-4 yrs. and go into investment banking ?

congrats on your full-time offer! London is one of the most prestigious places to be in, for investment banking.

how come you ask this question while your status says IIM Calcutta?
Hi friends,
Need some help as I am slightly confused about giving CAT in 2011.
My profile is:
- Undergraduation= IIT Delhi
- Work experience= Working in a buldge bracket investment bank in Hong Kong from past 2.2 years.
My problem is that I want to shift to India and for investment banking jobs in India I am supposed to have IIM tag (weird as in HK it is not required, even some VPS / Dir / MDs dont have MBA here). So, I was planning to give CAT this year, but then I heard that in India office people hire at second year analyst level, but if continue working here I will be an associate in HK without utilizing 2 years in MBA. So, there will be no use of IIM degree in case I clear CAT. I dont want to give GMAT as my primary motive is to come back to India.
Can you please suggest how sitting for CAT can be beneficial for me. Also if you can highlight the benefits of 1 year MBA program at ISB for my profile.
Thank you!
Hi Friends..!! I found this link on facebook. This is an interesting article on careers in Investment Banking.

I may not be the right person to answer this but top IIMs like A,B,C accept overseas students with GMAT scores for regular 2 year PGDM. Why dont you find out more about the eligibility criteria of these courses?
Jamiroquai Sayscongrats on your full-time offer! London is one of the most prestigious places to be in, for investment banking.
Thanks Jamiroquai, am looking forward to joining there full-time - really enjoyed my time there.

I was going to ask the same question.
Also, am not sure what you mean by "suitable". Do you want to get into IBD? If yes, concentrate on it and you can get in. If you are asking if people before you with a similar profile to you have done it or not - yes they have. On the other hand, if you are asking whether you would fit in or if it is the right option for you, I do not think anyone else can answer that except yourself.

If you are working outside India and remain outside during CAT time, you can apply to the IIMs through GMAT - many people do join us through that route without giving CAT. You can check up the exact criteria on individual IIM websites.
Regarding joining positions, most recruits from IIMs do join in 2nd year Analyst positions, but that is because most of them have no prior IBD experience (working in IT in BB firm does not count here). However, for people who have prior IBD work experience, some companies do open up other positions and they even hire at Associate position.
In HK, as in London, it is true that many senior people do not have an MBA degree, but a Masters in some other field not connected to Finance. There, BB firms do go to normal universities to hire graduate/post-grad students from diverse streams, unlike here in India. Here, hardly any BB firm recruits for front-office IBD profiles, apart from top B-schools (sometimes they do recruit for Markets from top IITs, but that is it).

Not to blow my own trumpet, but I think the learnings from this thread are ~ 5x more beneficial in terms of what IB is
Thanks echoes7,
Actually I am not sure that whether I want to go for it through GMAT coz as I know this window is too small as compared to CAT. Even heard that IIMA average GMAT score intake was more than Stanford.

Your reply cleared the doubts regarding entry post IIM in IB. But still there are 1 points which if you or anyone else can shed some light, then it would be a great help. My doubt is that for my profile which one will be a better option: preparing for IIM or ISB, keeping in mind that I just want IIM / ISB tag just to relocate back to India.
Thank you!
Which course is better CFA or FRM? M currently pursuing MBA (Capital Markets) from NM, Mumbai.... Bit confused... I don wish to be a part of I banking industry... I am interested in doing equity research or being in derivatives research space...

That's because Stanford has a lower weightage for the GMAT. Applicants to Stanford are outstanding overall candidates. While the IIMs are making an appropriate move toward a profile-based selection procedure, the class is still leagues behind Stanford in terms of quality of class.
Disclaimer: I go to neither Stanford nor any of the IIMs and have great regard for both institutions.
Could you rate the Equity research & IB courses from:
Corporate Bridge Academy
NSE Certification course
(or suggest any other alternative)
in terms of course content and recognition (vis-a-vis employment opportunituy). I am looking at starting a career in equity research & IB and need to make a decision within the next 2 days.
HELP!
PS: i intend to do CFA or MBA fin eventually.
