I know this is not strictly "investment banking", but there is no other thread for this on PG.
Anyone know how prevalent/active are activist hedge funds in India? I mean there are quite a few mismanaged companies in India and I would imagine this space is going to heat up. Any opinions?
federer17 Sayswat r the qualifications needed to enter into an investment bank.??
you should preferable be an MBA + CFA
gudda1122 SaysWell i am preparing for CAT...an computer engineer from a very low level college....work ex of a faculty...i wanna know which colleges should i target if i want to get into this field....it will be great help..as this will remove cobwebs from my mind...
Well in India target MBA schools are generally IIM-A/B/C and ISB for foriegn banks. Indian banks like ICICI Securities, SBI Caps etc probably also recruit from FMS/IIM-LIK and a few other schools as well.
@Jamiroquai and others: It would be great if you could help me out with this:
I am a Chartered Accountant (cleared all exams in first attempt). I have a background of having worked in the field of debt syndication for corporate clients for a year now. Now I have got a call from IIM Kozhikode.
I wish to pursue my career in IB. From what you have posted, Front end Investment Banking is something difficult to land up into from anything except IIM A/B/C and XLRI through campus recruitment. So now I have 2 questions:
1. Will doing my MBA and spending 2 years at IIMK have any value addition to my prospects of getting into an Investment Bank?
2. With my CA background can i expect IBs in IIMK campus recruitments to make exceptions and offer Front end role(s)?
@Jamiroquai :
I am a passout from a tier 2 Management Institute currently working in IT.I am 24 yrs old. I have just started work. i can manage to get into a Boutique IB through contacts. I wanted to ask you that for me to get into a bulge bracket bank is this the right path i.e through boutique IB to a bulge bracket ?
If yes, then how many deals do i need to work on or see and how many months of work ex is needed so as to be considered seriously by a bulge bracket bank?
If no, then what should be the path for me?
Hi Jamiroquai,
W.r.t TAS work you have been suggesting, shall it help me getting in as an associate rather than an analyst post MBA into the IBs ?
Also, talking about the exit opportunities from IB, I have read that it is very difficult to enter into PE if you are already an associate at a BB. Could you throw some light on this w.r.t India and abroad ?
Thanking in advance,
Akash
Hi,
I have converted NMIMS MBA-Banking Management. Though my first preference was Core, I couldn't convert it and now I'm joining Banking Management. Will this degree restrict me from entering IB? I come from an IT background but I really want to get into IB.
Also, I am sure IB is not offered in campus placements. I don't have much contacts, so I sometime wonder how will I manage to get into it? Your thoughts?
Thanks!
Hi,
I am about to join a B school and planning to take finance as the major. Though salary is a big factor to decide upon the job after completion location is one of my constraints. As I am from Delhi I would like to stick to a job in NCR. Can you please suggest what are my options after completing my MBA. Do the private Indian banks have IB profiles?
Hi,
I am currently doing my Bachelor`s degree in Business Administration in India. I will be specializing in finance with electives such as security analysis, M&A;, Strategic financial management etc.
I have a GPA of 3.33 on 4 (83.5%), a 4 or 3.5 in accounting, finance and quant subjects such as stats and business math.
I am confident of graduating in the top 5%.
I have been a table tennis national champion and have lead the state team for many years and a few other accomplishments.
1)What are the chances of my application getting accepted at a BB IB firm in India for the position of a full-time analyst in the IBD ( I am not talking about getting a job but an interview ) ???
2)Would you advice me to work at a boutique firm in Mumbai after graduation (doing financial modeling, comps etc for 2 years) or in support functions at Goldman Sachs, Bangalore( campus recruitment) ???
3)Looking at my profile, would you advice me to get an MBA from India ( IIM`s, XLRI etc) or abroad ??? I ask this question because I feel it is really hard to compete with engineer applicants during campus placements provided I get into top schools. Are engineers preferred? If so, then why?
I am deeply interested in Investment Banking and I strongly believe I will be able to it.
Kindly guide me.
Thank You
Are modeling questions asked in the telephonic round? if yes? of what type? And can you help me with some sample question(s) please?:
Generally who takes the telephonic round? HR/senior bankers/some1 else?
Any other relevant details or advises are gratefully welcomed. I am damn nervous, so please reply ASAP.
PS : Moderators, I have also made the same post in 'Why Finance' thread. Pardon me please as I am desperate and need help urgently. :D
1. are modeling Qs included in first round
-> basic finance and accounting questions may be included (not always). I don't know what a modeling q is.
2. who takes the telephonic round?
-> HR or an associate level banker
And hey, Thanks a ton for the reply 'Mad-head'. Really helped.
Thanks again for taking the time 😃
They may give you scenario & would ask few question based on it to judge your knowledge :sneaky:.
As you know:
Investment banking (corporate finance) is the traditional aspect of investment banks which also involves helping customers raise funds in capital markets and giving advice on mergers and acquisitions (M&A;).
The investment banking division (IBD) is generally divided into industry coverage and product coverage groups. Industry coverage groups focus on a specific industry, such as healthcare, industrials, or technology, and maintain relationships with corporations within the industry to bring in business for a bank. Product coverage groups focus on financial products, such as mergers and acquisitions, leveraged finance, public finance, asset finance and leasing, structured finance, restructuring, equity, and high-grade debt and generally work and collaborate with industry groups on the more intricate and specialized needs of a client.

Ques: How do you use the three main valuation methodologies to conclude value?
The best way to answer this question is to say that you calculate a valuation range for each of the three methodologies and then triangulate the three ranges to conclude a valuation range for the company or asset being valued. You may also put more weight on one or two of the methodologies if you think that they give you a more accurate valuation. For example, if you have good comps and good precedent transactions but have little faith in your projections, then you will likely rely more on the Comparable Company and Precedent Transaction analyses than on your DCF.
(But this is just an example you may be asked with some other questions based on your subjects in final year, interns, paper presentation, projects etc. I was asked about Market analysis of Auto-Financing, more about Debts, type of debts, future of credit in India, Working Capital based etc)

Hi Jamiroquai,
Thanks for the loads of information , helped a lot in clearing my doubts.
I have a questions for you. Currently I am working with one of the BB in Mumbai office, primarily backoffice. I am an Engineer by degree from BITS Pilani. Have a 1 year work ex before joining IB backoffice in an IT financial services firm, so basically I have been connected to finance right from the start directly or indirectly.
You know how the backoffice works in India for the BBs, I am writing CFA soon and would be going on a 12 weeks trip abroad ( as part of the rotation policy, where people from backoffice go and work from the frontend offices in London, NYC, Singa, HKNG ).
The exposure has been good till now given my non finance academic background, however I would not want to make a career in IB backoffice,
Can you suggest some career alternatives from here, I am planning to do my MBA , either from Europe or India.( will try for tier 1 b schools only). Can you give me some insight as in what career options I ll have after working in IB backoffice for a few years and then doing n MBA from a good school.
Also the never ending questions, mba from india or abroad, do you think I can leverage on my experience with an MBA from India or abroad is a must?>>
Thanks
Hmmm that's a little tricky questions, yes IB firms hire @ entry level grads who are But again i cannot guranatee you this as this will totally going to depend on the recruiting team from the XYZ MNC.
Two of my seniors joined Accenture Management Consulting (Best IT eir PGP @ IIM-B. They joined @ Sr.Analyst position & then moved to Consultant position after 13 months.
Hope this Help & clear your doubts. Yaar just have fun & Mock the CAT & leave the rest.![]()

Hi all,
Jamiroquai had been suggesting me 2-3 years TAS experience post CA and before MBA.
My question is that shall it help me getting in as an associate rather than an analyst post MBA into the IBs ?
Also, talking about the exit opportunities from IB, I have read that it is very difficult to enter into PE if you are already an associate at a BB. Could you throw some light on this w.r.t India and abroad ?
Will be highly grateful for any response
Thanking in advance to al,
