Mad-Head has been doing some phenomenal work here on the thread. While I am usually too jammed to be able to get on PG and reply to posts, Mad-Head has been doing so with great patience and excellent information. Hats off to this great guy!
Mad-Head: If any of your posts are inaccurate, I'll write an errata section below your post. But I haven't needed to, thus far - that's been some great info!
What are the steps from ground zero to head-start a career in investment banking from being a fresher engineering graduate? If you suggest reading and learning the basic financial terminologies, could you please point me to some good study material for novices.Or some classes or certification programs in Mumbai.
Before i can give you the steps from 0 - 100, 1st know the basics of IB, life of an IBanker & other myths associated with it. Refer the first few pages of this thread for the same. Ask youself if you want to move into IB ONLY because of MONEY or you are crazy about the idea of being an IBanker because you love FINANCE.
Here are the steps:
Engineering > MBA (Top B-school) > CFA/CIIA
Here is the catch if you are lucky you can get a job @ a BB firm right after your MBA but that normally happens @ Top B-Schools (so you have to be there). Many top Consulting firms like Bains & Co. hire grads from ONLY IIM A,B,C no other IIMs are on their hiring list.
But there are many IB firm who do hire freshers for their Middle & Back-office job profile, you can be lucky there.
Go through this thread carefully as I've attached a IB vocabulary pdf for students who are new to the world of FINANCE. Familiarlise with those terms & other posted in subsequest threads like Equity Market.
There are many books that you can refer to like Investment Analysis & Portfolio Managetment by M.Ranganathan & R.Madhumathi.
You can check more about certification in IB from Copal Institute Copal Institute | Copal Institute or SIB (School of Investment Banking) School Of Investment Banking.
Hey, thanks so much for the info! I am afraid i am going to trouble you with a few more questions though.. Is it possible to learn the stuff on your own from various books and other sources (since i have all the time in the world now) and look for analyst position jobs.It might be a long shot, but i need your honest opinion on this. I am asking you this because i want to do an mba in finance only after some experience under my belt.Top mba institutes are not going to give me a chance even with 99.99 percentile with my current profile. And trust me when i say this; I have made my mind to go down this path, so I am willing to do whatever it takes and will keep at it till i exhaust absolutely all possible options.

For classic investment banking, refer to the book Investment Banking - Rosenbaum & Pearl. I can think of no better book. Regarding the institutes, I honestly cannot say anything positive about the Copal Institute or the School of Investment Banking. The first school is a relative unknown in the fin-services landscape of mumbai and the second is not taken too seriously even among the lower mid-market shops.
Also, regarding education, a CA works a little better than getting a BE, to get into a strong IB shop.
