What is the prospect of a fresh-graduate (in IIM A, B or C) for a very fat salary job in Investment Banks? Can you also tell me if C is better than A or B for finance and IBs??
I have followed this thread very keenly for a while and I have always found it very relevant and useful. Thank you all for the efforts. I believe that I can help this thread by sharing my perspectives on the industry based on my modest experience.
I am a second year MBA student and recently completed internship at a major Investment Bank in NY. I loved the experience and will be joining the firm full time after completing my course. As for my background, it is very typical of most people posting here. I worked for 6 years in an IT services firm and played the role of a project lead prior to joining MBA. I decided to interview for IB quite early in the process. My decision was primarily driven by the interest I developed through interactions with alums and intern experiences of previous class. With more than a fair dose of luck, I landed an opportunity with a major bank in the Leveraged Finance group.
My experience is limited to 10 weeks of intership at a NY based firm and countless hours of networking and preparation. I would be happy to share my experience and answer any questions you guys might have specifically if it relates to US opportunities. Additionally, I am very much interested in learning about IB indstry in India and how it is shaping up. Looking forward to good discussions.
@aruncat said:@GrailSeeker i have a few questions...1.Are you attending one of the top b schools like say IIMA or IIMC (if you could share that it would be helpful). 2. what is the process for internships like....what are the things that one should concetrate on while preparing for a finance intern..is prior banking experience necessary?
I am doing MBA from Emory University, Atlanta, US. As I said in my earlier post, I am familiar only with recruiting in US and not in India. Even though I am bit familiar from what I know from friends, I would rather let others with first hand experience to talk about it.
Here is US, recruiting is heavily based on networking. I primarily relied on alumni network, met them countless times for informational interviews, communicated why I wanted to do banking and how my prior experience is relevant. This made sure that I had interview calls from more than few banks. Performing in the interview was just matter of preparation.
I am sure process is slightly different in India. Prior banking experience is certainly not required to get an internship or to convert the opportunity in to a full time offer. You just gotta be prepared enough. Hope this helps.
thnks that was informational. Can you describe your internship experience in detail(what you did, timing etc)? i am sure everyone on this group would love to hear how it is to work in a major investment bank. thnks

I am an engineer in Information Technology (2005-09), and pursued my MBA (2009-11) in finance (not from a tier 1,2 college). Currently I am working in a bank as a trade and forex RM. It has been 18 months since I am working in this bank. For the first 12 months, I was working as a management trainee (credit analyst) and post confirmation I was shifted to RM profile. I have worked in a investment banking division as a trainee as a part of summer internship during my MBA. I have been interested in the valuation side of the job, and in investment banking since then. But the required firms did not come to our campus for IB and valuations.
Currently, I am planning to do a certification course in IB from SIB or Imarticus. Suggest me whether it is worth it to do these courses seeing the kind of education and experience I have.
What should be my plan of action to get into IB and valuations?
to be very frank.. i am avg guy.. should i go for symbi ssbm its a new banking managemet school.. plz guide me.. how can i get into IB i wana b any how.. u tell me the path .. as in your thread olreday said IIM A/B/C..these A college only lead to Ib not a normal college how could i get into dis :(
There is more to banking than IIM's and excel, such as conversational and intra personal skills which you completely fail at and would probably be dinged at the first interview.
A good starter would be to look at profiles on LinkedIn and see which schools they attended. I saw several non-IIM's
@foars plz guide me how to start.. thinking joining symbi if converted.. means i dont the path IIM A B C they knew bcoz they directly converted to IB zone.. OR cfa ppl but i m btech cs...
if i do mba form avg college then what.. confusion hi confusion hai..i wana go in finance sector only :(
Why don't you try for IIM's and other top schools then? Reach out to symbiosis alumni and ask how many got placed into IB. If you are really that motivated, I would drop an year and rewrite the CAT exam
IIM graduates will always have an advantage over you in terms of recruiting because firms know that they were smart enough to get into top schools to begin with
Everyone's heard of investment bankers - but there's very little understanding of what they do exactly. I've been in the investment banking industry (mumbai) for the past three years and am planning to go back into this industry in the US. So I thought I'd open up this thread to answer questions you may have about what investment banking is all about in India and abroad.
