Investment Banking in India and Abroad

Hi,

After completing my MBA from IIMK last year, currently I am working as an IT consultant in one of the top IT Consulting firms....
What are the possible ways for me to go ahead?

Career switching is best done in business school. I have not seen anyone career switch post b-school unless they're very senior, beyond awesome at their job or very very connected.

However, there are always possible exceptions, but even amongst the ones I know, I have not seen one like the one you would need to be.
Quant research, as is, does not exist in investment banking which is basically a relationship business. However, quants are very appreciated on the S&T; greatly. In fact, S&T; shops the world over comprehend and appreciate the awesome power of the IIT brand.

If you talk about wanting to get into S&T; in your essays, I don\'t think you should have any issue getting into some of the best grad schools here in the US.

so what kind of number crunching or technicals an investment banker is supposed to know????

The usual:
Acads:
Core Accounting
Core Finance

Extras:
Valuations (DCF / Comps / Option-based) - and methodologies, pitfalls, ranges, applications
Strong understanding of what industry you're in
Market understanding and what pricing looks like on current deals
Whats going on in the market + insights
Strong excel knowledge and financial modelling ability
well that is why im going for CS side by side just in case i loose out in the first attempt :-P..

*PEACE*

I don't know how you're going to tie in a CS degree into what your plans for post-MBA goals. Maybe echoes can help?

Company Secretary course deals more with the Legal and Regulatory compliance side of businesses - it is not related to IB as such, like even Accountancy/CA is somewhat related. However, for getting into a Top B-school, if you can convince your B-school interviewer about why you need an MBA (and no other degree would suffice) to fulfil your career goals and why being just a CS(or CA or whatever undergrad degree you have) is not enough, then you are good.

Not sure where the entrepreneurship thing came about, it is hardly the case. The stuff jamiroquai quoted above are required for all I-bankers. Entrepreneurship, on the other hand, is highly in-built and no specific "type of people" are more into it than other!

what i meant was i can\'t randomly start my investment banking company all of a sudden... where as porfolio management type of thing can be started without any hassle.... because normally if u want to raise money through an IPO you go to famous investment bank.

companies don't normally go to small investment banks for IPOs - this is because an IPO is a big deal and the start of the company's relationship with public shareholders. big banks have the capacity to place and the appetite to underwrite all of the company's share float. This capacity is very very important because all companies look to have their shares 100% subscribed.

An undersubscription is usually very very damaging to a company's public image and is a scar that remains on the company's investor relations portfolio for very long.

Well thanx a lot jamiroquai and echoes7 ..
i would like to highlight here is that the CA course syllabus is now not only releated to accounting and tax like the old days but has firm roos in other areas also.. The sylabus has radically changed now.. We now have a complete paper on all the nuances of finance..syllabus ranges from security analysis to corporate finance .further the financial reporting paper now has a lot of valuation based chapters.further one of my frnd is a CS and is emloyed as an (cont)

Equity analyst in a pe firm...now how godd is that,??

ps; will a cfa help here ,??

*PEACE*

(Cont) as an eqity anyst in a pe firm ..now how good is that

Hi

I am an Associate working in a big 4 advisory profile in India. I have approximately 4 years of work ex (2.75yrs-Analyst,1.25 years Associate) in financial consultancy (M&A;) in areas such as valuations (comps and simple DCF modelling) and buy/sell side mandates for small companies (preparing IMs, presentations and teasers) and a few Strategy assignments. I have a Bachelors in Commerce (Hons) from one of the top 3 ranked colleges in India. I have a GMAT score (680) with a quant score less than 80th %ile.

Is my profile of any interest to a Top B School based in US or Europe. And after that is it good enough to interest a prospective I-Bank employer? I feel this is the ideal time to apply to a B school but feel I have a weak GMAT score which would/could get me an interview for school but not secure a place in the final shortlist (have been waitlisted in Indian B Schools).

As Jamiroquai said earlier, unless you have awesome contacts, the only other way to get into IB front office is through the Best B-schools. So what you should do is start preparing for CAT/GMAT for whichever college you are targetting.

P.S. In case you want some embellishments to your CV to aid you later, you can go for CFA on the side or even NCFM modules (to get a taste of Finance and what it is about), but these are strictly secondary.

AFAIK, plum IB front office jobs are only offered to students from IIM-C/A/B and ISB in India. Other top 10 B-schools students do get recruited sometimes, but it is mostly dependent on whether the firm is bullish in hiring or not and the prevailing market conditions at that time.

As to your specific query about NMIMS, it would be better if you can find some alumni of MBA(Capital Markets) to tell you the exact profile and compensation offered.

echoes7: dont you feel Investment banking ( front office) is the worst job for some one who can easily read charts and do the techniclas ( basically print legal money) and do some wonderful work.....

Investment banking I guess can make you only a slave and never an employer..... Stock market is the saviour for a number cruncher and a chart specialist...

hey thanks Jamourqui.... I have started hating investment banking....

relationship business @ investment banking is no big deal... as per me minimum skill set reqired....

PS: Mastering charts is aint that easy!!!!

What all i learned from these posts is that....

XYZ company wants to raise money through an IPO contacts ABC comapany(Investment bank)... This invetsment bank that will make a lot of money out of this deal , will ask one of its top investment banker ( some middle class IIT/NIT with IIM/XL/ISB degree) to drink with the client , make best use of his analytical mind( some hard work and research) plus some communication skills to get the business and then work day nd night for the deal and make a succesful IPO.... in the end this investment gets a hefty bonus on 31st march!!!!
Fee generator right????

Equity research is so better!!!!

I have not done investment banking.
But one cant master stock markets by reading charts alone. That is one thing you can be dead sure.
All the charts are there in front of everyone and still less than half make money.
