ISB Class of 2014 aspirants.

@RN83 you cant feel old @ 29 !! 😁 i am 26.. you are like just 2-3 years elder.. we all are coming there buddy and its not old !
@engineer.22
So if ISB has said that application has been found to be complete then that is it, if they have any doubts or feel any further documentations is necessary they will surely seek it later.

So dont worry and keep your fingers crossed for the i/v call. All the best :)

now losing hopes 😞

every passing hour is making me or rather forcing me to think about planB,C,D which doesnt even exist

@rahulmarwa: hw ws ur interview exp

My take on FT Rankings
(Since I don't have a blog, I am writing here)

I feel ranking data should be viewed in the right perspective. When I was researching B-Schools, I read in many places that one should first establish what he/she is looking for. Collect that data and create your own ranking. If only ISB participated in other international rankings, we would have had more data to analyse.

I say it is important to create your own ranking because what matters to me is different from what matters to the publisher. For example, I want to join ISB because I want to pursue Healthcare Management, which no other B-School provides in India. This is a VERY important criterion for me. So in my personal ranking, ISB comes 1st, 2nd and 3rd. No other school comes even close. But just because someone ranked ISB 1st, would you base your decision on that. Just because I want to join ISB, would it be prudent for someone else to join ISB without first trying to understand WHY and HOW did I come to the conclusion that ISB is no. 1 for me. This is the reason you should always understand the methodology behind the rankings. Take only the data that matters to you.

As management graduates we would be required to take informed decisions which have business implications, which in our case is 1 year of time and 25 lac in fees. I would not spend this based on someone else's opinion. My career is ONLY my responsibility and I cannot put the reins in anyone's hands even for a sec.

I wish that ISB participated in other rankings also, so that we had more data to analyse. But it's an MBA's job to make the best of what he/she's got. For me only a few things matter in the FT rankings. The good thing about rankings is that you can see how different schools perform in various parameters. So I am going to compare ISB and IIM-A on the parameters that matter to me.

Always take Average and Percentage figures with a pinch of salt. As we know from quant DS questions, AVG and % can be misleading.

When you click on a school's name in the ranking table, you see 2 tabs: Ranking data and Alumni profile.

Only the following parameters are important to me under "Ranking data":

1. Weighted Salary (US$): ISB=123k & IIMA=171k
=================================
What is means: The average alumnus salary three years after graduation, US$ PPP equivalent, with adjustment for variations between sectors. Includes data for the current year and the one or two preceding years where available.

My take: This is the current average salary of CO2009. What I notice is that there is a large difference between both figures. As we know that ISB has an average work ex of 5 yrs and IIMA has 7 yrs, it is natural to see the disparity. I would have preferred to see a Distribution Chart for salary figures with some indication of salary in terms of work ex. 3 years from graduation I will have a total work ex of 7.5 yrs. I don't care what do figures for 15 yr work ex look like, because that's too far in the future. A Distribution Chart would also show how skewed the graph is and allow us to understand where the majority lies.

2. Salary Percentage Increase (%): ISB=152 & IIMA=110
=====================================
What it means: The average difference in alumnus salary before the MBA to now. Half of this figure is calculated according to the absolute salary increase, and half according to the percentage increase relative to pre-MBA salary

My take: A difference of 42% !!!!!!!!!!!! Before we start jumping with joy, let's put this in the right perspective. Percentages can be misleading. Since ISB grads are middle-level managers (5 yr work ex), the increase appears higher in percentage terms, but might not be so high in absolute terms. On the other hand just because IIMA has lower percentage increase, we cannot conclude much. As you move up the ladder, the percentage increments get smaller. But in absolute terms it might be much higher.

3. Employed at three months (%): ISB=100 & IIMA=95
=====================================
What it means: The percentage of the most recent graduating class who had found employment or accepted a job offer within three months of graduation.

My take: ISB's 100% placement record, given that it has a huge class size, is certainly reassuring. And since IIMA has a small class size, 5% would mean 3-5 students only. One has to understand that IIMA class has senior people, and their recruitment takes time. The number of opportunities goes down as one moves up the pyramid. The 100% figure displays ISB's commitment towards ensuring success of it's students. It also shows how much faith the job market has in ISB graduates.

Nothing else on this tab is a make or break parameter for me. Now let's move to the "Alumni profile" tab. Please note that these statistics are based on the data supplied by those alumni who responded to the survey. Class of 2009.

4. International Mobility: ISB=28% & IIMA=39%
===============================
What it means: Alumni who moved countries following their programme (per cent)

My take: ISB class size in 2009 was 437, which means that 122 students moved countries. This number is more than the entire class size of IIMA. So clearly, more NUMBER of students from ISB are achieving International Mobility compared to IIMA. Percentages can be so misleading. Again we need to put things in perspective. Mr. Menon said at an info-session that many students refuse international offers because domestic offers are becoming more lucrative. So the actual number of offers could be much higher. Another point to note is that in the last 3 years some students might have got domestic offers initially, but switched jobs and moved abroad. This figure does not reflect the international mobility for current batch, which would be more important from our perspective. This number might have gone up or come down. We will only get to know when the respective placement reports are released. Finally, many IIMA students already have international exposure and they join the course to come back to India (from what I have heard, may or may not be true).

5. Current job title: ISB=mostly in the middle & IIMA=middle to top level management
========================================================
What is means: Alumni job titles three years after graduation (per cent)

My take: This is quite obvious. Since ISB has an average experience of 5 yrs, most students remain in middle management 3 years after graduation. On the other hand, IIMA students have an average experience of 7 yrs and reach top management after 3 years. Many inferences can be made from this particular graph. 55% of ISB students are at Professional/Senior manager level 3 years after graduation. So ISB is ideal to move to middle level management. 65% of IIMA students are at Dept Head/VP/Partner/CEO level 3 years after graduation. So IIMA is ideal to move to top management. Higher salaries of IIMA alumni are due to their higher positions. This also explains the lower percentage increase. 0% unemployed in both graphs is self explanatory. About 2% from HKUST and 5% from Nanyang are unemployed 3 years after graduation (I haven't checked any other schools). I would personally stay away from schools which have a higher unemployment percentage. For example NUS has 0% unemployment, so if this figure is of prime importance to ME, then I will pick NUS over NTU, because they are in the same country. Of course a small percentage does not make much of a difference. Also, I don't know the class size at NTU. But this is a more rational way of looking at ranking data.

6. Current Sector: ISB=diverse & IIMA=IT/Telecom/Consultancy (55%)
==============================================
What it means: Sector of employment three years after graduation (per cent)

My take: The wide range of sectors at ISB shows the variety of opportunities that exist for ISB students. Personally I would pick ISB over IIMA because healthcare sector shows 0% at IIMA, whereas ISB has a healthy 8%. If you have 7+ yrs of experience and you want to go back to top management of an IT company, then IIMA makes more sense for you. If you are a Finance guy then please note that 60% alumni of HKUST work in Finance/Banking sector. Since Placement reports are available for most schools, it is easy to see the trends before making a decision. If they are not available, then this year's data can be compared with previous year rankings to see the general direction. This graph is also important because it shows sector-wise distribution of a school's alumni network. In your personal ranking, this factor should have a significant weightage.

Only these 6 parameters are important for me. As you can see out of all the 25+ parameters, only 6 were of prime importance. I would encourage everyone to create their own personal ranking before they apply to any other schools. It is not the rank, but the data that is important for research.

It is really important to view the data in the correct perspective. Don't get misled by averages and percentages. ISB is the right B-School for me for various reasons. It might be the right schools for you too, but it should be for YOUR reasons. There are many more factors that matter but are not covered in FT Ranking. I love Businessweek MBA Rankings. They provide a lot of data for analysis and research. You should come to a conclusion only after researching all the dimensions. Make your own rankings and apply.

I have objectively put forth my opinion. I invite others to put their views. Please let me know whether you agree or disagree with what I have said. I hope to learn from your way of looking at rankings.

@ammo44 bhai.. IIM I PGP, NMIMS, XLRI GMP

Target is MBA from India bro. Better the college, the better.

May I dare to ask whts urs ?? :)

Cheers,
@The_Hunter Hi Mourya, wow buddy, I envy you. You've a great career. I guess if ISB doesn't take you, it will be their loss more than yours. I wish you all the best.
BTW, did you have skype interview or in person?
@rohitsa

Thank you for the compliment and wishes. There are several applicants with great careers. I am sure you are one among them.

I initially had opted for skype interview, but I was in India during December and January and hence I requested the adcom to provide me in person interview if adcom were to shortlist me for the interview.

Adcom was kind enough to attend to my request. Luckily I was invited for the interview when I was in Hyd.

When is your interview? Where are u based ?
Please let me know your profile.
I wish you very good luck :)

@The_Hunter

My interview is on 10th Feb, the last day of interviews, which adds to my nervousness and anxiousness. I am based in New Zealand, so I opted for a skype interview.
My profile is

Age: 25
GMAT: 690
10+2: 67%
10th: 89%
BTech (Mechanical): 74%

2 years experience as a Hydraulics engineer and 2 years experience as a mechanical power transmission engineer.
My EC are just okayish. Recently been accredited as the green star professional for sustainable designs.

Guys, any piece of advice for me?

@The_Hunter
You have a nice profile bro. Plz don't worry about your GMAT and acads. You got an interview, so among your group of competitors (automobile engg) your profile must have stood out somehow.

You have very strong ECs with leadership roles, which gives you an edge. My guess is that you might have written about your ECs in one of the essays, hence they did not need to ask you about it.

One always comes out of the interview room, thinking that it could have been better. If you were satisfied that day, when all the details were fresh in your mind, you do have a good chance. Doubts start creeping in as time passes, it's natural. That you would have found a 100 reasons why it went well, today you will find 100 reasons for why it didn't. Go with what your gut told you as you left the room.

You could certainly have told them about points which they did not cover. In my case after I finished asking the question, in the end, I said there is something I need to tell because it did not come up in our conversation. Then I took 2 min to tell them. They were happy to talk about it. I was in 2 minds just like you. But I thought, jo hoga dekha jayega. I have come this far, and I did not talk about it yet, this is probably the only chance I will get.... So I went for it. I think it was a good decision.

I am very sure that the panel members will remember you for the rest of their lives. It's not everyday that you get to meet a crash engineer :)

Dear Puys,

All i see is the interview debriefs of R1-2013. If anyone has the latest debriefs then please share them. One more favor - could anyone please share the list of words of this year for 1-word essay.

Eagerly awaiting for your help.

Are the final results of admit/ reject declared only on February 15?

I don't see any problem in your profile, in fact it is quite impressive, but, as you must have heard so many times, i/v call depends on many factors..
may be someone with profile similar to you might have applied and may have better essays.. i mean possibilities are endless.. don't get disheartened..
however, i agree with you that people posting on PG have amazing profiles..
P.S. I am also still waiting for i/v call
@spaceaura1 My friend who applied in R1 received the interview invite just 2 days before his interview, which was on Nov 7th (The last day for conducting interviews in R1). And the delay in sending out the interview call has nothing to do with your profile. They just have to find the alums who have similar profile to yours and schedule it on weekends when they are free. There are so many things that have to come together for setting up an interview πŸ˜ƒ Keep preparing as you have been doing and you'll be just fine..All the best for the interview call!! By the way, I'm also in the same boat :)

The panel was really friendly and it was a more of a discussion.The questions asked:Panel: 2 people (I dont remember their names. One was an alumni I think)1.How happy r u about u r job?2.U have such a good pay and brand, why do u want to get back to India? I gave two reasonsPersonalAfter a certain stage money is not everything. It is the work satisfaction and family life that is imp.I told I am attached to my family and its been 5yrs in Europe already and I want to be close to them. (I really spoke from the heart, did not think if it wud be right or wrong. I do not knw hw they will perceive this answer).ProfessionalI explained for an auto enthusiast, India is a place to be in. I told few valid reasons why India is a great place for pursuing automotive related challenges.3.What do u do at Porsche?I am a crash engineer. They found it funny and started laughing.4.How do you solve problems at work? Explained 2 ways.. I felt i cud have answered this better. But I guess I was interrupted (I dont remember)5.What do you expect from ISB?6.Tell u something about the auto sector in India?I told only 3-4 points (I feel I shud have told more)7.Why are hybrids not successful in U.S?8.If you were offered a job in Benz and in Maruti, which one wud u choose?I told it depends on the role responsibilities i am offered. I said I am particular about the job responsibilities rather than the brand. Actually I was offered a job by benz last year, but I rejected the offer. 9.They asked me why I rejected that offer. I explained them that I was not happy with the role I was offered. I explained I wud be very happy to work for a company which introduces me to launching of Electric vehicles in India. I also explained about a start up from Israel who are into promoting Electric vehicles and spoke a little about Mahindra's new electric vehicle.10. Any questions to us.I asked two questions related to ISB and its involvement with auto sector.The panel was firing questions rapidly, did not allow me to think much b4 I cud answer. Hence I just went on speaking. I don't recollect any stage where I stammered during the process. I answered everything spontaneously. Perhaps I cud have given better answers to few questions. I was really disappointed that the panel did not ask me anything about my extra curricular activities of which I am very proud of. I had even taken few paper cuttings from leading news papers about my projects to show them. But they never bothered to ask me about these projects. I was in two minds whether I shud force myself and talk about my formula racing exp etc, but I really did not find a chance, hence I left it alone. Now I feel I should have done it somehow. But few ppl say one shud not force things and few say I shud hv somehow managed to sneak these points in.. I just hope this will not go against me.Over all I am not sure how my interview was. My acads as u see are not my strengths, my Gmat is low, perhaps Interview cud have been better. So I am kind of tensed. I am eagerly waiting for the decision on Feb15.I wish good luck to all of you here.If you need any info, just message me.
Well, from your above mentioned de-brief,your reason for coming back to India seems to be more personally driven rather than professionally.Since, you already have an M.S. and is employed with a coveted brand in a technical role, you must have had a hard time explaining ISB on your need to do an MBA.IMO this would be the most important factor when ISB decides on your candidature given all other factors works for you.
P.S. : This is just my personal opinion and hope you take it in right spirit.I am sailing in the same boat as you.

This is my first post on pg...

Very few skype i/v calls... Is this all???
Did anybody u know receive i/v calls via skype today?
