ISB Class of 2014 aspirants.

Just a general question about the GMAT. I have given GMAT twice; first time I got 600 and second time 680. But I want to cross the 700 line and so want to give it once more. If, by any chance I get less this time, say 660, what happens in that case? Will the 680 score get counted or my latest score 660 will be valid? Please help....

Congratulations to all the admits. I was offered admission too(R2 Waitlist) but I had to decline for this year for personal reasons. I hope some one in the waiting list gets a call now as my seat has been vacated for this year. I was pretty silent on this thread but did read from time to time. Thank you for all the insights.

@arkas - only highest score is counted. But don't be negative, with hardwork and planning, you can cross 700.

2 questions:

1-Is there a minimum gap one should maintain between 2 consecutive GMAT attempts.
2-Is there a cap on number of GMAT attempts in a year.

TIA

yes, I believe the gap is one month. The GMAT website tells you that.

No, there is no cap.

When does the course starts for application submitted in September ?

Will give GMAT in next 2-3 months.
I have a total of 6 years experience.
3 years in an Indian IT biggie
3 years as manager in my own family business.
How would I get the references. Though I can manage few from my ex-employer seniors. Should I position myself having business experience for 6 years ( obviously by being manipulative ) or just keep the things as is on the table. Pls advice.
@arkas ISB takes the highest score, so 680 will be considered. In any case of factual information it is better to write to admissions as some rules may change from year to year.
@nannuabhi Atleast 1 month gap betwen 2 attempts and at max 5 attempts within 1 calendar year. Search "How often can I take the GMAT exam?" on Google and click first not-sponsored link, you will get the details.

Yes, reference should be from current or past supervisors.

Why would you be manipulative here? It's unethical and perhaps damaging to lie anytime in your professional career. Be transparent and clear about what you have done and what you intend to do.
@roops03 Do aim to improve your profile a lot in coming year as re-applicant essay question will be crucial. Do aim to improve your GMAT above 680 for noticeable improvement.

Gmat: 620Experience: 3 and a half yearsXII 85%X 91%Profession: Architecture and constructionGot rejected, applied in R1 for 2013. I am an architect and I am planning to re apply for the 2014 section. I am awaiting ISB feedback for the reason on rejection. I have joined JLL now as a project manager, and I think I will be able to get better recommendations now. Amy suggestion if I should give my GMAT again?
@swethapretty Strengthen your profile on following fronts:

1) Leadership and team skills - Show impactful results on projects where you lead or motivated a team, managed a crises, motivated a team.
2) Have clear post-MBA goals - what exactly do you seek to do post-MBA, consulting, strategy roles, marketing etc
3) Have some decent extra curricular achievements in your kitty - A well rounded personality is always well received by adcoms

Hi,

I am Rohith. The reason I am writing is because someone can throw some light on the eligibility factor for ISB considering my profile:

X- 90.33
X11 - 94.5
Btech- 70
Work Ex - 22 months come April'13
Designation: Business Consultant, IT
GMAT- should give.

Please provide inputs on the following:
1. What is the avg GMAT score required to apply?
2. Can i apply to ISB just with 2 years Wok Ex provided I have a decent GMAT score?
3. What could be other factors on which my conversion depends?

Thanks in advance!!

@Thumma
Hi Rohith...

i. There is no good or bad GMAT Score for applying. The adcom look at the complete application which includes ur essays, references, quality of work ex and GMAT score. GMAT is a one aspect of your application. A good GMAT score will definitely help you but cannot guarantee a place. However, I think people with less workex should have a high GMAT score. Anything above 700 and you should be very happy with ur performance.

ii.
if you are applying to CO 2015, you would have around 34 months of work ex. However, one can apply to ISB with exactly 2 years of work ex. I will complete 2 years on March 31, 2013 and I am in. So, that's not a problem.

iii. Other factors are - essays (including video essay), reference, quality of work experience, undergrad GPA and ur performance in interview.

Hope this helps,

Alll the Best!!!
@AspiretobeMBA Thank you for the prompt response!!
May i know your GMAT score?
I understand from the ISB portal that we can apply for two rounds right. So if we couldn't convert in the first round, can we apply for the second round in the same year??
@Thumma
I got 720

There are two rounds for application. However, you cannot reapply in round 2 if you could not convert in round 1. You will have to wait for the next year.

All the Best!!!

@AspiretobeMBA did you get selected for admission?
Can you share your experience of the admission process

There is no cut-off as such, higher the better, for your profile 730+ would be a positive 700-730 would be decent.

2 years should not be a problem if you have proved yourself on below.

Following aspects of your profile which need to be brought out in your essays and applications, will crucially affect your admission chances:

1) Leadership experience - Have you lead teams, have you take initiative and driven projects?
2) Team experience - How have you fared on team dynamics? Elucidate examples where you have exhibited exemplary team building skills.
3) Impact on Business metrics - Have you impacted key business metrics in your organization? Revenue, cost, recruitment, what has been your impact on these?

Dear Seniors/ISB Alumni,

Please help me with my profile evaluation; I am aiming for ISB Hyderabad 2014 admit.
I will try to give my best while writing an essay or presenting my profile, but I would like to know if my profile is competitive enough. Also shall I retake GMAT to better my chances? I think I can stretch my score ONLY up to 730.

GMAT: - I scored 710 (92%) (Q-50 (90%), V-35 (74%)) IR-6 and AWA-5
AGE: - 27
EDUCATION: - Master's Civil Engineering (Virginia Tech-USA); Bachelors from a well-known University in India.
GPA: - 3.67 (Master's); 77.7% (Bachelor's)

Work Ex:-
I am a CIVIL ENGINEER, with 3 years of full time experience with a US based MNC; I have worked on some good
projects in India, and currently leading a team of 3. My projects include 5 among top 20 tallest building in India,
including the 5th tallest building in India.

Some strong Points in my profile (In my View):-

•During Master's, I worked on two projects as a lead research assistant worth $200K.•Apart from Full time Exp, worked as research assistant for 2 year, got 40% scholarship.
•Published two research articles in leading International journal, one of them as First Author.
•Developed an application used by Florida State Government (USA).
•On weekends, I work on my family-business, just started a joint venture with 3 other partners to develop a small colony in a mid-populated town in India.
Please advise me, I would eagerly wait for your reply.

Thank you,
MT
@MT You have robust profile with decent GMAT score, academics, good and diverse work experience. Stick on to strong areas in your profile and then focus more on your application essays, recommendation rather than worrying about GMAT score and academics.

You are in right stage of career and most of the top b-schools look for 3-7 years of work experience. You should start planning for your applications soon which will give ample time for comprehensive preparation. However you should also plan and need to cleverly prepare for questions like your objective behind applying for a specific B school, why MBA? etc.

The next step would be to focus more on your applications essays to portray your leadership qualities convincingly to the admission committees of top b-schools.

For a detailed discussion on your profile please PM your contact details or feel free to post any other query or concern that you might have

Can't see much of strong points from your work experience in US. Focus more on projects where you exhibited leadership, motivated a demotivated team, handled skillfully a crises situation etc. These are actual strong sub-stories that will form a great app story for you.

What was the final impact of these projects, did your project finally go into industry/academia and is being used by a firm/academic institution? Mention some revenue/cost improvement numbers.

What is this app being used for, what was the final impact on people, processes or institutions? As such this point has no impact at all.

Whats your exact role and how does this fit in your overall career progression.

All in all, always be clear about your post-MBA goals as adcoms are very particular about them. There are multiple positive points in your profile which stand you in good stead, however know the actual impact of your work and structure your positive points in order of the this result delivered.
