Hi Alums

Have a question regarding social work looked by ISB in their applicants. I have been involved in providing financial support for orphanage and other institutes, but wont be able to provide any proof for it. do you think this will help my profile if mentioned?

Hi...I have a small question...
I will be joining SDA bocconi Italy for My Mba and plan to join ISB as an exchange student.

I plan to work in india post my MBA, will i have access to Recruiter base of ISB??

Hello Team,
Appreciate you guys taking the time off to answer questions.

My question is regarding the comments on switching careers. I work in the Entertainment and Media industry as a professional for the past 10 years and now contemplating a move into management in the same industry.
- So what exactly is considered switching careers. I have been working on the floor in production and now I want to move to decision making and management. Would that constitute switching?
- What is the media and entertainment representation like at ISB?
- Finally, would you consider the year at ISB as having a balance between work and extra curricula?

Cheers

Hi Team
thanks for the nice work you ppl have been doing over a period of time.
I fall into the 8+ year category of students
I was reading on this website that isb discourages students in my work experience group. Is this true. can you throw some light on what kind of life some one with 8+ years work ex can look forward to when at isb

Best Regards
A

Hi Japoni,

A quick reply to your questions.

- Switching roles would definitely be considered a switch given that the current job requires a different skill sets. If you are looking at this from a BSchool application perspective it is something that BSchools look for as such a switch is a logical one.

- There is a healthy representation of Media folk in the batch. I encourage you to visit About Us, Media Club to understand more of whats done on campus. I can also put you in touch with people from my batch who will help you out.

- ISB is a purely student run school. The balance of work-life is totally up to the student. Classes run from Mon - Thurs. There are two 2 hour classes everyday. These two classes are scheduled in either morning or afternoon batches depending on which section you are in. Every semester half of all sections (there are 8 sections with 75 students per section) have afternoon classes and the other half have morning classes - this alternates every semester so that every section has a fair share or morn and afternoon classes. Since you have classes for just 4 hours you get to choose how you spend the rest of your time.

I recommend you visit the following thread where I have painstakingly tried to answer prospective students questions 😃 Post all further questions there to build the repository..

Hi,

There is no Such thing applicable to ISB Admission. In fact There is a senior executive club in ISB for people more than 8 years of work-ex. But the important thing to note here is that you have to be absolutely sure that what do you aim to extract from ISB, Secondly what are your goals and how ISB will be able to Help that as you have sufficient years of experience to get that without MBA.
Also it will be difficult to Shift industry as in a new industry you are almost as good as a fresher, therefore it is difficult for you to accept that.

hey.. i have a couple of questions

1. the YLP offered by ISB- any idea on what the GMAT score should be?
2. are there any other good reputed B-Schools in india and abroad which consider freshers? since i will be writing GMAT very soon, it would be helpful if you could let me know if i have a chance of applying to any other school right away?

Hi,

I am currently working in an IT firm with 1.5 years experience.

After completing 2 years I am planning to quit the firm and change role from IT
to business side.So I am planning to work in my family business for an year which is mainly based on marketing. After that I am planning to apply for ISB .Can it be an asset during an admission?Do i need to submit some documents that I have been in the marketing for an year?Or is it more safe to apply after quitting the firm??Please give me suggestion.

Hi,
I am Ritu. I wanted to know in the current second essay ( where you see yrself in three years after graduating from ISB) will it reflect badly(as in cadidate is coming with a closed/predetermined mindset) if the answer has a clear cut goal (like "i see myself as a top HR executive in a renowned MNC")? Can the answer be as general as "i have a flexible mindset and the rich experience at ISB will help shape my career as a future manager"?

I also wanted to know how is the placement scene w.r.t. HRM in ISB?

Thanks!

I am not sure how active this particular thread is. I request all prospective students to move your queries to the following thread that I had started a while back - you queries will surely be answered.

Hi Sir,
I have done my engineering from BIT Sindri in the session 2007-2011.I got admission into VGSOM,IIT KGP this year as a fresher..but i did not join it because of lack of experience as I want to do MBA after gaining some quality experience.I have joined Infosys this year and i want to do MBA frrom ISB after 2-3 years.I have following queries:

1) Since i am from IT background where competition is very high. What should i do from now onwards so that i will get an edge over others during selection process as i have 2-3 years time. Can you suggest me some certifications or something else as i want to shift my domain from IT sector to finance.I want to prepare myself from now onwards.

2) Since in IT firms we remain at a position of system engineer for starting 2 years which involves mostly coding stuff...only after that we can move to some managerial position like Team lead etc.So, How many years of experience will be sufficient that will help me in my MBA programme as well as in selection procedure.

3) I have passed my 10th and 12th from Jharkhand State board.Therefore..inspite of being topper of my school i have just 70% in class 10th as well as in class 12th.Will you look into this board related matter? Will this hamper my chances of being selected?

Thanks.

Hi Seniors,

I applied to ISB last year and got dinged w/o an interview. I ahd requested for a feedback and today I received this:

1) Your domain exposure did not come out strongly in your application.

2) More experience/exposure will add value to your profile.

I am from an IT Pool with 4 years experience, and an international experience of 1 year.

I am not sure how to interpret the above feedback. Any help in this regard would be helpful for my application

gauravjha: 4 yrs of IT + 1 yr Intl and still ISB feels that ur domain exposure dint come out strongly in app? more exp? 5 yrs is avg of ISB, what do they want .. 10 yrs and then u can't be placed or asked to apply for PGMAX :)

I am not from anything thats remotely IT as well( I banker/M&A;) but prima facie I can see that you dint do well on the goals and differentiation essay .. These 2 essays are very very important .. U need to bring in all ur major accomplishments, unique things in these essays. Apart from this you should make use of the application to its best. Quantify all your achievements, EC, Community service.. You need to showcase how in these 4/5 yrs you have learnt and delivered top notch things. Highlight you leadership potential ( leadership is not equal to Managerial position), if not in work , outside work, college etc..

Iam sure someone from an IT domain can help you out better in terms of differentiation. 1 yr of Intl is definitely not a differentiation in IT unlike if its from a marketing/CA/HR professional . You are expected to work onsite with 5 yrs experience.

Shoot any questions you have in terms of 2013-14 apps/ essays in case you are re-applying and I believe you should.

Hi All,

Need your inputs on the suitability of my profile for ISB. Is the experience too much? Are there people of similar profile in the current batch.

Profile in Brief - Will have 8 years 7 Months of IT(Infosys) experience by Feb 2013.Close to 30 years old. Currently playing the role of Team lead for my current project and reporting to the offshore program manager. Teams from 3 other locations also report to my program manager. Team size is 8-10 members in a niche technology(WCS).WCS is built on Java and I am also quite well versed in Java.

GMAT - 740 , Q 48 V 42.

Onsite Ex - 3 years of onsite experience working for Bank of America from 2007-2010. Recent short trips to US as offshore lead for initial project setup for an Ecom major.

Long Term goal - I will continue to be a part of IT industry but want to get exposure to other facets of Industry like Corporate planning, Business development etc. Right now all my experience is in delivery. I plan to be an enterpreneur if i can find the right opportunity and right team for it. Otherwise I aim to reach a leadership/strategizing postion in the IT Services/Product business in one of the Indian IT biggies. For all this i hope that the knowledge/network that i gain in PGPX/EPGP or ISB will help me.

Recommendations Question? - I have good connect with my clients in BOFA and should be able to get recommendations from the clients i reported to. I also can get recos from my current manager if that will be considered as having more weightage. I have worked across 2 domains(Ecommerce and Investment Banking) in a technical capacity. Should i try to get one recommendation from each of the domains? Should i focus on the recent recommendations or can I go back to 2010?

EC - Not much. Part of a volunteer organization for youth based out of kerala. The organization is spiritual in nature and is part of an ashram that i have been associated with a very long time. Was treasurer of this org in 2002-2004 time frame and is an active member/mentor for the newer folks.

It will great if i somebody can link me to an ISB alumni with similar background.
Thanks.
