Dear Mr. Menon, Thank you very much for taking out time from your busy schedule and helping us! Could you please help me with the following queries? 1) I am currently working with an Investment bank and want to continue working in the same field post MBA. Could you please confirm which IBs come to the ISB campus and ~ how many % students are placed with the IBs? Also if possible, could you provide a rough estimate on a) IB placements at Analyst vs Associate level b) Domestic vs international IB placements 2) I have been involved with many NGO activities, however i don't have certificates for most of these activities. Will my inability to provide certificates hamper my application? Thank you in advance for your help! Thanks & Regards, Ajay
Ajay,
Last year, eight I-Banks recruited from ISB. However, we cannot mention the names of the companies on the forum.
20% of finance jobs are from IB.
Roles offered from Analyst to AVP.
Instead of listing these activities under Awards & Activities, please mention your NGO work in the optional essay and also specify that you wont be able to provide certificates for the same.
Once you add your latest work exp, you will be able to the view the same link 'Add previous experience details' again, click on this link and you can now add your first work exp.
I am new to posting on this forum and please excuse me if I have forgone "thread posting" rules.
I have a couple of Qs which are specific to my background: This is my career background: --> BE in Comp Sci from University of Madras - 2004 with 90%, 100% in Maths and overall 2nd rank in college. --> Masters in Software Engineering from Carnegie Mellon,USA - GPA 3.8/4 --> Work experience of 3 years with HTC, Siemens Research and Oracle. --> Plus interests lie in blogging, extra curriculars, loads of volunteering work with multiple NGOs.
Given the above:
a. What are the options that one gets if she choses to switch sectors - say from Process Consulting (IT) to another sector such as Finance? b. What kinds of consulting roles are offered post-ISB? c. W.r.t General management, what are the roles offered? d. Given the huge initial investment in terms of fees, what could be the % increase in ROI, post-ISB? Mod Edit: ISB, like all other b-schools, will prefer you achieve your highest GMAT score. They do not specifically state a particular score for a particular applicant based on her profile.
Again, I must thank you for your time to answer my query and help similar prospective students.
Thanks, Shini Menon
Dear Shini,
Thank you for your patience.
a) I am answering this question for people with engineering as background. Career switching from engineering background into finance should be no problem provided you have the basic ingredients. Corporate finance could be an interesting option. Career switching from engineering to finance analytics will be a simpler task to achieve. The key skill sets required to get into finance analytics area are
Quant orientation
Analytical skills
Data analysis
Engineering to Investment Banking will be a bit tougher task to achieve. The key skills required are
Skill set discussed above and in addition
Networking skills
Very strong communication skills
Leadership potential
Willingness to travel
The entire possible career options discussed above requires all these skills. However, the range of requirement varies depending on the job/ role you aspire for. Please note that the demand for I-Bankers at any particular time is market driven. Keeping in mind the current global economic slowdown, the demand for I-Bankers this year will be affected. However, since its inception, the ISB has managed to place 25% of its batch in the finance sector every year. b) From Analyst to Principle/Lead Consultant. c) Management associate to Vice President. d) The ROI figure varies from person to person as it depends on a number of factors like company, industry, previous salary, role, academic and interview performance at ISB.
Hello, Hope this mail finds all the members in great spirit and health. I am Pathik Jain, 22, and i have just finished my graduation from National Institute of Technology, Bhopal. I will join Reliance Energy this august and I am prepared to pursue a MBA degree. I have some questions for you sir: 1.Ideally, why should one go for an mba, for the only reason i see it is for a better exposure, better career, and evolution of mindset. I am not in love with any of the management subjects, yet i find myself desperate for the degree, maybe because of the greater role one gets after pursuing it. Please present before me a larger picture, if there is one? 2. I am an average student, with very high ambitions, with a dream to shape the future of this country. I always think of entering politics 15 years down the line, having acquired some position and capital. Am i taking the right path, as in looking for an MBA from ISB, thereafter a job, a start-up maybe, and then finally active politics, considering i may not get a great score in GMAT? 3. IIms have a two year management programme, your school has a one year programme, so how should one decide as to whcih one offers a better in-depth understanding and al round skills, and what actually is behind your course module? I know your global ranking, but rankings are temporary, internal framework is class
Moderator note - deleted question asking about preparation of GMAT.
I am also in doubt as to what sort of a profile should i seek so as to enter ISB two years later.
I have obatined 86% in 10th and 12th CBSE, graduated with a CGPA of 8.35 Have an excellent college profile. Please help me out.... Thanks & Regards Pathik

Regarding high experience, please refer to page 20. Yes, you can choose international contacts as your recommenders. Admissions Team
I have a couple of questions regarding Recommendation letters, for which i'd like to request your response.
1) One of the people that i plan as my recommenders was my ex-supervisor from my job of first two and a half years. But its been three years since i have left that organisation. Although still in touch, would it be acceptable and recommended to have someone as a recommender who was a past supervisor. Because there are possibilities that somethings, especially related to experience and personality traits, would have changed with years, that might not get reflected in the recommendations. Or can it be taken as an opportunity(during the interview) to explain progress made on some attributes mentioned by the recommender.
2) When do recommenders get the online access to the questions, is it directly after filling up the recommender form and saving it, or are there any other procedures before the recommender gets the forms.

Nishant,
Such a reco will be accepted but not recommended. You have correctly mentioned that there is a possibility of change in personality traits, so why take a chance? You will be short listed for interview on the basis of your application and recos. So, it is best that you get your reco from somebody who you think will really do justice to your personality.
The moment you save and submit the details of your recommenders, they will receive a mail from our end.

MBA gives you the macro and micro level perspectives of business and various other issues that impact a business.
It gives you cross functional and vertical exposure which is vital for some one who wants to drive a business to success.
MBA gives you the tools and skills required to handle leadership positions.
MBA gives you the learning that can be applied in any industry or any function which not many other programmes can do. MBA is pursued by architects, doctors, lawyers, engineers, entrepreneurs, artists, sports persons etc The key thing is either they can go back to their industry or they can do a career switch and perform equally better in other industries. MBA facilitates that transition.
MBA gives you an opportunity to be part of the strategy teams of an organization. If you want to be in a strategic team of your organization, MBA definitely helps you towards that aspiration.
2) IIms have a two year management programme...? Comparing ISB and IIM is like comparing oranges and apples. Both the institutes are pioneers in their own fields. You, yourself will have to take the decision as to which institute suits you best. Admissions Team
I intend to take a recommendation from a person who has been my supervisor in the past - he has been my senior/supervisor in various stages of my career. My last formal professional association with him was over a year ago (it ended when I quit that job). However, we are networked to this day.
My query is regarding the fact that my last formal professional association with him was more than a year ago - in your opinion, will this have a negative bearing on my application?

p_jez,
No, it will not have a negative bearing on your application. Refer to page 24 also.
This query is in relation to the eligibilty required to apply for the PGP programme offered by ISB. I completed my 12th under the CBSE syllabus from a school in Dubai, in 2004 and subsequently joined for the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) professional qualification in Dubai. I have since completed 12 out of 14 papers. The last 2 papers have been attempted during the June 2008 sitting, the results of which are expected during the month of August 2008. I was also working as an Auditor with Moore Stephens International in Dubai over a period of 40 months (fulltime) while pursuing my ACCA qualification. I am currently in Pune preparing for the GMAT test, which I intend to write on the receipt of my ACCA results in August 2008. I would like to know if I am still eligible to apply for the PGP programme as I have not done a 3 years Bachelor's degree.

Bachelor's degree is mandatory. You can always opt for a distance learning programme and then apply to ISB.
Admissions Team
Dear Sir,
Does the above recommendation mean that I can simultaneously opt for a distance learning programme and apply to ISB at the same time?
Also we have an option of achieving a B.Sc honours degree from Oxford Brookes University in partnership with ACCA, on the submission of a thesis to Oxford Brookes University, the score of which is based on an average of our level 1 and level 2 marks of ACCA. Is this also applicable?
In the elective courses offered for semester 5th to 8th at ISB , I donot find any specify course pertaining to Human Resource Management. Please advise which elective will be suitable for someone looking forward to build a career in HR.
Also, Please do let me know the approximate no. of companies that recruited people for HR positions from ISB last year.
I went thru the profile blogbut could find what I was looking for.
So I am posting my question in this forum
Below is a summary of my profile
1. MBA from IMT Ghaziabad full time 2004, Rank 5 2. Good academics all thru 3. Strong Extra curriculars debate, committees etc... 4. Strong work work experience 3 yrs with GE Money as Product Manager and last 1 year with The Royal Bank of Scotland as Sr Manager (Portfolio mangement) 5. 740 GMAT
My concern My salary @ 16.5 L is considerable higher than the batch average. I want to build on my experience and move to consulting. Will I be able to get a job which pays more than 25L (my BEP).
Wat % of the batch was placed outside India...and what types of jobs these were. The website has little detail on this. Pls elaborate.

Hi.. I had a question about the recommmendations...
I am as, majority of the applicants are, an IT guy..but I have worked as weekend Radio Jockey in a radio station for almost a year...last year. I just wanted to ask that will one of the recommendations from my production manager at the radio station will carry some weight or will it be better if I get both my recommendations from the current industry itself.
I am asking this because .. 1) I was a Radio Jockey last year..not this. 2) It was just a weekend thing but I did receive a lot of recognition because of that.
