It's back! -[2008] Ask ISB-Hyderabad: Admission Director answers your queries!

hi,
i don,t have any great academic records.my career stands like this t present.
10th-64%,12th-58% and engineering -56%. worked for a year as graduate engineer in a steel plant now presently working as the marketing executive for confetti media.i really aspire to join isb. Mod Edit: Profile Evaluation Question. As long as you fulfill the requirements of ISB, you are eligible to apply. Whether you will be a competitive applicant is completely different.

Sir,

I am a CA practicing independently, as a proprietor, for the last 3 years, deaqling mainly in taxation. I have a good academic record (Rank in CA throughout, including an award for the best paper in accounts in CA final). I am also pursuing LL.B., which I shall complete in the next 3 months. I have taken my GMAT, with an overall score of 700.

I would like you to please guide me on the following :-

1. Does my work-ex as a self-employed professional working independently count towards ISB's admission criteria?

2. As a CA in practice, and even more so as a sole-proprietor, who all would be able to give me letters of reco?

3. Regarding the query on the latest salary figures, what should I fill in? The gross receipts or the income as per Income-tax records?

An early reply would be very helpful.

Thanks & Regards,
mmca

Sir,

I have a break in education. I was planning to write the optional essay to explain the break. But while filling the online application, I found columns which ask you to explain if there is a gap. I would like to know which method would ISB consider better to explain the gap - Essay or Application form column.

thanks

I have total experience of 4 Years and 2 Months as of Aug' 2008. I am currently with HCL Comnet as a Sr. Systems Specialist. I have continued with B.Tech. along with my job through correspondence from AMIETE and will be completing in Dec'08.

I am Planning to give GMAT in June' 09 and will apply to ISB for the 2010-11 batch. So at the time of beginning of the programme, i have ~5 Years and 9 Months of experience. Please advise under this circumstances am i eligible to apply and fill in the aplication for 2010-11 Batch?

Thanks for your valuable time and advise.

Dear Mr. Apurv,

I have a simple query regarding GMAT deadline at ISB. What is the deadline for GMAT score for 2009-10 admissions?

I read some where that 15th September is the deadline for GMAT scores, is this true? Or is this the deadline for 1st cycle ?

I also learnt that there are 2 cycles with deadlines 15th September & 1st December, 2008 respectively.

I have this concern since i am not able to find GMAT appointment by 1st week september so will not able to meet the deadline for 1st cycle deadline i.e. 15th Septmeber; so i then have to look for appointments after september, 2008.

Can i then apply for Cycle 2 with my GMAT score?

Kindly advise.

Thanks & Regards,
Dhruv Gupta

Hi Menon,
I am keen to do my MBA from ISB.
I just want to know If I am eligible or not.
After my BSc(hons) , I pursued MCA and have around 6yrs of technical exp.
Pls let me know so that I can get going if I am eligible .
I know the other processes like GMAT etc but first thing is my education . I should be thankful to you.

Shubha

Hello Mr. Menon,
I'l begin with a brief background.I completed my B.E in Information Technology from Fr. Agnel Insitute of Technology,Navi Mumbai in July 2006.I was campus placed as a Specialist IT Officer in a public sector bank. After working at the bank for six months I joined Capgemini in January 2007 and have been working there since. In short I have around 22 months of IT experience as of now.

However, I really am not sure as to which area I would like to specialise in.I have liked the kind of work done in the IT industry, but I am not sure if this is what I want to pursue for the rest of my life.
Also, the fact that I have not been exposed to any other industry does not help my cause. For example, I may have an aptitude for investment banking, but I obviously cannot determine the same till I actually work in the Investment Banking industry.
I have taken a couple of aptitude tests, but both only indicated that my skills and nature are make me suitable for the IT, Marketing and Finance Industries.
Now,I need your guidance in the following areas:-

1.What according to you should be my approach to determine my future field of work.

2.Will a two year program be better suited for someone like me, where in I could use the first year to determine my future industry orientation and then use the second year to specialise in it.

Finally, I need information on the following aspects:-
1.Do students of the GMBA program get an opportunity to do an intership, if yes what is the duration for the same and how does it compare with the almost three month intership time provided by two year MBA programs.

2.Does the GMBA course demand a certain level of knowldege of economics and/or accounting as a prequsite from its prospective students.

Regards.

Good afternoon sir or madam,

Ill quote my background in short:

- BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University.
--- Project and Procurement Mgmt classes taken at Krannert school of Managament
- Acads: 75-80% (converted GPA)
- GMAT 740 (97%)
- FULL time work ex by April 2009: 2 years 7 months in engineering management rotations
- Internship work not required as part of academic curricula: 9 months (total of 4 project terms in the USA, Germany and the Philippines)
- Activities: Educational outreach program, Treasurer Spic Macay.

My questions follow:

1. Can I elaborate on my experience and outside activities in the additional essay as I seem to have exhausted the word limit in essay 1?

2. I am interested in the management of infrastructure industries for example steel, automotive and telecom. What kind of companies recruit for these fields and what levels are ISB graduates placed in?

3.Mod Edit: Profile Evaluation now allowed

4. The two recommenders most appropriate for my application have never been my direct supervisors. May I still list them given that they have been my mentoring seniors at different points in my career?

Thank you and best regards for responding to our questions on this forum.

Dhruv,

15 September and 1 December are application deadlines for Cycle 1 and Cycle 2 respectively. The application will not be considered complete without a valid GMAT score. If you are taking your GMAT after 15 September, you can apply in cycle 2.

Mbaprep2008,

1) The first four terms at ISB are common for all students and cover various subjects. For a full list of subjects, please visit the link http://www.isb.edu/pgp/Core_Courses.Shtml
These initial terms give the students a fair idea about their capabilities with respect to a particular specialization like Corporate Finance or Marketing, etc. Once you join a management course, you will be in a better position to decide about your choice of career.

2) You, yourself will have to take a call whether a two year or one year program will suit your needs.

3) At ISB, we do not offer any internship but we have something better the Experiential Learning Programme (ELP). For more details, please follow the link
http://www.isb.edu/pgp/ExperientialLearningProgramme.Shtml?menuid=106

4) A basic knowledge of Economics and Accounting methods will definitely help you. Although, the same is not a pre-requisite for admission to ISB.

Admissions Team

Dear Admissions Committee,

I have two questions:

1. Will the interviews be conducted on all days of the week, or on weekends only? Also, are there any specific locations where interviews will be conducted only on weekends?

2. The deadline for submitting acceptance fees for IIMA's PGPX is 24th Nov, whereas the final result of ISB R1 is "On or before November 20, 2008" . Assuming I get an offer from IIMA, I would seriously consider paying the acceptance fees as a hedge, unless of course, I get the ISB offer sufficiently in advance. If not, I may not be able to muster the resources to pay the acceptance fee a second time in a month. Is there any way around this? Even if there is one that cannot be disclosed right now, I would appreciate just a "Yes" or a "No".

Arjun,

  1. Yes, you can but make sure that the information is not repeated elsewhere in the application.

  1. Incase of infrastructure companies; please note that all placements have been at a lateral level. For a list of recruiting companies, visit the link http://www.isb.edu/pgp/RecruitingCompanies.Shtml?menuid=108

  1. Yes, you can use their recos.
Admissions Team

Dear Mr Menon and ADCom,
I have got a question regarding the recommenders:

I have to choose 2 out of 3 recommenders and if possible I would like to have your expert opinion on it.Here are my options:

1. A Team Lead/ Direct supervisor ( Product based Semiconductor Company ) -
I started my career under his guidance and worked with him for 2+ years ( July 2004 - Sept 2006).

2. A Team Lead ( A small US based Software MNC) -
I joined this company and worked with him for 1+ year(oct 2006 - Oct 2007).

3. Team lead (A big electronics MNC) :
At present I am working in UK with him from last 9 months.

All of them are More or less equally impressed with my techincal and leadership Skills.
Hence I would like to know whose recommendation will ISB value the most.

Many Thanks

P_jez,
  1. Interviews will be conducted on Weekdays and Saturdays only.
  2. I do not understand your dilemma at all. ISB announces the results latest by 20th of November and the last date for submission of fees at IIM A is 24th Nov. You will still have four days to decide.
