Hello Sir, Thank you for providing such an spectacular opportunity to help us answer our questions. I am an Electronics engineer from a private Engineering college in kolkata having passed out in 2005 with the following profile: 1. Degree Grade Point Average:7.99 2. Work Experience: 2.8 months in Cognizant Technology solutions as a developer with a consisted excellent track record. Sir, in your esteemed opinion I would like to know what are the merits and demerits of the profile above, since ISB lays a high weight-age on the academic performance of the individual. I am planning to take the GMAT test in November and your opinion will be very helpful in guiding me to select my best approach.
Thanks and regards Anirban.
Anirban, we will not be doing a profile check on this thread.
Hi Sir, I wish to ask you for one of my friend: He has done his Bcom(DU), MCA,MBA( Both from Correspondence/Distance learing-IGNOU delhi) So with this Correspondence (2)masters degree is he eligible to apply to ISB. from past 4 years he has been working as SAP (HR) consultant and he wants to continue in SAP (HR) only or relvant profile in SAP. Is he eligible for doing second MBA and with Correspondence MCA/MBA degree..
Thanks, ABhishek..
Abhishek,
Your friend is eligible to apply but he will have to explain to the ADCOM as to why he feels the need for another MBA and that too so soon. Admissions Team
Iam an ex defence officer. I served in army for five years. I did a certificate course in management from XLRI, and thereafter worked in HR as recruitment manager. I was not satisfied with the six month program and always wanted to do a full time MBA from the best B- School. My creativity level is very high and so is my sincerity to the organisation , I worked with full sincerity and established the best practices in recruitment in my organisation. I was still craving for more and felt the need to have deep knowledge about management concepts. That is why I applied for ISB. I have a GMAT score of 700. AWA 4 , although academics are not very good. I wanted to know of my chances of being accepted as my AWA score and academics are not very good. I do have a rich experience of having worked in defence, social marketing and HR.
Rgds Kavita
Kavita,
If you have already applied to ISB you will be intimated about the interview round by mid October. Till then, keep your fingers crossed!
Dear Sir, I am planning to apply to ISB for the batch of 2009. Can you please look at my profile and let me know if it is decent enough to apply?
X Std: 87% XII Std: 81% B.E. Civil Engineering : 65% M.S. Civil Engineering: GPA - 3.5/4.0 M.S. Engineering Sciences: GPA - 3.4/4.0
GMAT : 710 (Q49 V37); AWA - 4.5
Work Experience: 5 years by April 2009
I am currently working as a Civil Engineer for a reputed Civil engineering company in US. I am in a Lead position.
Extra Curricular Activities: 1) Member of Toastmasters International, USA. I completed my Competent Communicator (CC) certification.
2) Member of Lions Club International for the past 4 years. Involved in wide variety of community activities as part of the projects undertaken in the Lions Club.
Professional Certifications: 1) Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM), USA
I have couple of questions.
1) Does my GMAT score needs to be improved for my applicant pool? 2) I would like to continue in Civil engineering and infra structure industry after my MBA. Were there any civil engineering companies that participated in the placement process in 2008?
Please let me know.
Thanks NM
Coolmed77,
1) No, I will suggest that you concentrate on your essays. 2) Yes, we did have some civil engineering companies that recruited ISB students. Admissions Team
First of all thank you so much for devoting your precious time in answering our queries. I have read few of the earlier posts and also went through ISB's website, but still there are few questions that came into my mind, I will be thankful for your response.
1> Is someone who is rejected in R1 admissions, eligible for R2 admissions with changes in the applications kit? If yes, Will it hamper his/her chances of admission?
2> Is there any fixed % of number of students who are selected from R1 and R2 ? and if so what is the % ?
and if not then it will be very helpful to know what % of number of students out of the total batch were selected form R1 and R2 in the previous years.
thank you so much sir, and Congratulations for making into Top-20 List.
I have a couple of questions regarding the GMAT evaluation
1) Does ISB differentiate/attach weightage between a balanced score and a composite score. What i mean is hypothetically speaking, someone has a composite score of 710 but its more skewed towards one section, vs. some with the same score but more balanced score in both sections. Will the balanced score be given a higher grade or both get the same.
2) For the IT pool alot of people have a notion that most engineers who get admits are ranging above the 740 mark. Could you throw some light on your figure of average score of 730 gmat score for IT pool. Are there any engineers from this pool from within the 700-720 GMAT score range?
This is regarding the 2 year work experience pre-requisite that has been mentioned. I see from the earlier posts that the admissions team has told an aspirant with 22 months work experience ( measured until April 2009 ) that there is absolutely no chance of him getting admission into the session that commences in April 2009, and that if he wishes to be treated as a candidate seeking deferred admission he must mention so in his optional essay.
I attended an information session held by ISB at Bangalore in July 2008. As part of the session we interacted with some ISB alumni. When a similar question was raised pertaining to the rigidity of the 24 months work experience pre-requisite, one of the alumni mentioned that she had 1 year and 10 months of work experience at the time of admission.
That led me to believe that a strong profile with about 22 months of work experience would be considered for admission to the session commmencing in April 2009. However, the response in page 3 of this thread contradicts that.
Could you please clarify that for me? Have the rules been changed?
Thanks and regards.
Shankyoyea,
We have made a few exceptions to some extremely brilliant candidates in the past but are now stricter on this. We have decided to consider giving a deferred admission for applicants with less work experience if their profile is strong otherwise. I hope this answers your query. Admissions Team
I have a query regarding the applications. I have completed "Certificate in General Insurance" provided by American Institute of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter and Insurance Institute of America (AICPCU/IIA). Where can I mention this on the application. I completed this certification to help in my job (working for an Auto Insurance provider in the US).

Thevoid,
1) No, you can only apply once either in Cycle 1 or Cycle 2. 2) There is no exact ratio but we do try and maintain it to 50-50 or 60-40. It all depends on the quality of applications we receive in a particular year. Admissions Team
I would like to give you an acknowledgment of appreciation for this wondrous thread. Query: I understand from your past replies that anybody can overcome his poor academic scores if he demonstrates proficiency in his work experience & GMAT score, my query is after a canditate procure admission in ISB under such measures - Will his past poor academics will again be assessed during recruitments & how much it will effect in getting a higher role or other salary perceptive. Looking forward for your level headed response.
Kind regards, Jason.
Jason,
Your past poor academics will not be assessed during recruitments. The companies look for the following while recruiting students:
Quality of Work experience,
Professional achievements, role etc
Grades at ISB
GMAT score. (The last two things will be a current indicator of his/her academic potential)
My GMAT scorecard says that I have a GPA of 3.9, but my actual GPA is 2.5/4.0 according to GMAC's reference table (converted from %). I do not know how this happened. I contacted the customer center and asked them to leave it blank, and they told that they will send me a score report with blank GPA after 24 hours.
But they told that, they had already sent the Score report to ISB, and they will not be sending again. (unless I request again)
My question is, Is ISB going to consider those GPAs ? (reported under "Self Reported Information" in the score report) Obviously I dont want to be called based on those GPAs.
Dear Mr Menon, I am a re-applicant (could not succeed last year) approx 6+ Y exp till date in telecommunication. I got a feedback to improve my GMAT and distinguish myself from my pool. I could improve my GMAT from 690 to 720 but my AWA is 4.0. other positive side is that I could do lot of improvement in my profile with good amount of success on the job as a manager in last one year. Could it compensate for AWA?(If this question comes under the profile evaluation category please ignore and I apologize) Now I come to the second query I have. I want to switch from program management to strategic consultancy. What is the track record of IT people with this profile switching to strategic consultancy role after MBA? Thanks and Regards Abhi
Although I got the answer to the most of my questions in this thread but I have still one question related to my profile.
Just after completing my B.E., I took a drop to prepare for IAS. I took two years and did not succeed at it, although the process itself was enriching and I read and learned a lot in this process. After that I covered a lot of lost ground in next three years and now am in a decently comfortable position financially (but it's not too great either). So my question is whether, in totality, this whole condition of having invested substantial time in trying to achieve a dream without any material gains will be seen as a major drawback in my application? What can I do to portray this in best light?
I am a mechanical engineer working in a mechanical engineering intensive software development work. I got 730 in GMAT (42 V /47 Q / 5 AWA). Thanks a lot, Shobhit
Dear Dr. Menon I am a doctor with 3.5 years experience. I recently gave GMAT and got 750(essay 5.5). i have a few doubts regarding admission process.
1. Does ISB take MD period as work ex.? I think they should because unlike MSc courses, MD means full time hospital duty(for which you get paid ~25k/mth).
2. Does ISB take internship period as work ex.?
3. Doctors like me don't have experience in the business world. So how do you assess us when it comes to our business acumen?
4. What is the average GMAT score and average work ex of the doctors who joined the class of 2009?
5. What are the fields where doctors diversify after their stint in ISB? Will I be able to take electives which help me further my career in healthcare management?
Thanks for all the lovely replies you have given earlier. I will be looking forward to your reply
I have worked in IT industry for past 2 years and wish to move out towards social entrepreneurial field. I have two concerns:
1. I request your brutally honest opinion on if ISB is a cultural fit that would help me realize my ambitions.
2. I wish to tailor myself a course to understand finance and entrepreneur and i opine that having no background in finance will make a 1 year course unsuitable for me. Request you to comment based on your past student profile experience.
Santa11984,
Social entrepreneurship is a definite possibility at the ISB and the culture at the ISB is in no way an impediment in becoming a social entrepreneur. In fact the ISB hosts an annual event called GSVC which is aimed at nurturing the business models that have strong social impact. This is an international event. If you are interested in social entrepreneurship, GSVC gives you a chance to network with investors. We would like to believe that a one year programme is sufficient for a student to gain enough knowledge over the finance concepts. You can pick and choose your electives from finance and entrepreneurship if you wish to major in these two areas.

Many thanks Nishant Khanna
Nishant,
1) This concern arises only when the overall GMAT score is low. You need not worry on this end as you have a good score. 2) As I have mentioned earlier, the average score in the IT applicant pool is 730; so definitely there are engineers in the current batch with GMAT scores between 700-720 and also below that. Please keep in mind that we are talking of averages here and not the highest or lowest score. Admissions Team

Shobhit,
As you have mentioned that your two year gap was very enriching, please talk about this experience in the optional essay and also how you added value to yourself during this period. The gap years will not reflect negatively on your application.

Krishor,
We do not consider the GPAs mentioned on GMAT score card.

Dear Adcom,
Had a few questions
1) What would be the historical average GMAT score for CA and other Finance professionals? Would be quite a lot lower than 730?
2) I do not have certificates for an award that I won in my college days. Do I explain this in my Optional essay or let it be?
3) What is ISB's policy on the "essay review" (not essay writing) services that are offered by various agencies? Is it acceptable to go for this? (I did ask this question earlier, but not sure I understood the reply fully)
