I have a fair amount of experience (18 yrs) in man ,management and have done a Masters is Defence and Strategic studies with distinction. Have a 720 GMAT score. Do I have a fair chance in getting through the ISB? What are my future options at 40 yrs?
Could you illustrate on the core values of ISB. As I learn more about ISB, I was curious about the values that the instiute looks to inculcate in a future leader/looks for in an ideal leader. And, do you lay more stress on a particular as compared to another.

Hello Sir, I have a couple of queries regarding admission procedure.
1> Though I have a IT profile, the roles i have played are very skewed and not Tech related. I have been potraying more of a consultant/buisness analyst role which my manager(recommender) and my client would approve of. Will ISB consider the role played by the individual or would the IT background bring him in the IT category of profiles.
2> I know GMAT scores are primary indicators of academic ability of students. But as a good GMAT can cover up poor acads of a prospective candidate. Does ISB also believe a not so good GMAT say '650/5.0' could be covered up by strong Acads throughout the prospective candidates academic life. My point being I had a bad day with the GMAT and due to personal issues I am unable to retake it, but I do believe that I am equiped acads wise (as shown by my undergrad and schooling records) to undergo the rigrous 1 year PGPM at ISB. Is it worthwhile to make this argument to Adcom? or am I being too optimistic?
Regards, trex08
Trex,
1) We will look at your role, function and domain in the company. All three will be considered as separate entities. 2) Please note that GMAT is only one of the criterions. We do a holistic evaluation of your profile which includes essays, recos, work exp, past academics and GMAT. If you feel that that apart from GMAT, you have an exceptional profile then apply with your current score. Also, the median 80 percent range of GMAT is 660-760 in ISB. Admissions Team
Dear Sir, greetings. please clarify this to me, i have already arranged for 1 recommender, that is my supervisor. for the second one, which recommendation will be more accepatble for PGP admission?
1> my ex senior, whom, i last worked with for 1.5 yrs, 1.5 years ago
2> my colleague in office, who is a year junior to me. / my colleague in community club
3> other department head in office, who seeks my help in random projects of his dept (since his dept does not have an engineer), and also interacts with me on other administrative issues, has observed/acknowledged my contribution in various other offfcial issues.
Dear Sir, I attended one of the Interactive Seminars & would be really thankful, if you could clear the following doubts/queries, in order to submt a better application & REAL chance:-
MYSELF I am into niche marketing & International Business & Managemnet se gment & have even pursuing a entrepreneual in the same. I hold posiions simultaneously in an NGO & a Sports Club/ Federation, Media groups, Co-authored book etc.
1. POOR ACADEMICS - in Xth (ill health) & graduation (personal reasons), ok & improvement in 12th & Professional courses like CIC, GNIIT , Certificate courses etc. Will getting at the class avg (720) GMAT validate my academia basket & give me a chance or evn 690 will do .
2. WORK EX - apart from 4 yrs of exp (at the SSI & SME level) -Managerial & I One yr Enterpreneual Exp. Does that Act as a positive or a detterent to my application. In future i look to pursue Entrepreneurship after relevant Exp. Also please access my quality of Work Ex (is it base only on the stature of the Organisation or the resposibilty of the individual too?)
3. RECOMMONDATIONS - Can i forward my than 2 evaluators, since they are very imp to give a 360 evaluation of my dimension. (others through will be through offline mode)
4. EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES - I have a wide basket of ECAs & look forward to intimate the same to the ADcom, online system has only option of 3.
5. REALITY OF DIVERSITY - Apart from Pros like CAs/Docs/Enggs/ITs etc, please intimate the percentage of unconventional professionals with diverse ECAs & active public presence, to DIVERSIFY the batch. Eg- Viren in Co2008 This will give us a realistic view of the odd ones out.
thanks & regards
Kunal,
Since you have average academics, a good GMAT score will add strength to your application.
We look at the depth and breadth of your work exp and your role & responsibilities play a major role in that.
Can you please be a little specific in this query?
You can write about them in the Optional essay.
Every year we have a few students from unconventional backgrounds like fashion, sports (Taekwondo, Hockey, Table Tennis, Volley ball), theatre, movies, professional Adventure sports etc.
Dear Mr Menon, I am a re-applicant (could not succeed last year) approx 6+ Y exp till date in telecommunication. I got a feedback to improve my GMAT and distinguish myself from my pool. I could improve my GMAT from 690 to 720 but my AWA is 4.0. other positive side is that I could do lot of improvement in my profile with good amount of success on the job as a manager in last one year. Could it compensate for AWA?(If this question comes under the profile evaluation category please ignore and I apologize) Now I come to the second query I have. I want to switch from program management to strategic consultancy. What is the track record of IT people with this profile switching to strategic consultancy role after MBA? Thanks and Regards Abhi
Abhi,
We understand your concern. What matters to us is the quality of the entire application package which means that each parameter of your application counts. It is impressive that you have shown good improvement in GMAT and also in your professional side. It is now your responsibility to submit a better application in all other counts. We have a decent track record of students switching career from IT to strategy consulting. If you want to know more about this or get in touch with one such profile I request you to write to us at[email protected] Admissions Team
Thanks for taking out your time & clearing the doubts posted in the forum.
I am a Mechanical Engineer working in the IT sector for the last 4 years.(as of today) Last year I had applied for Round1 with a GMAT score of 700(4.5 in AWA) & was not selected for the Personal Interview round. The feedback I received was that my GMAT score is low among my competition pool.
Now, I am taking the GMAT again in October & applying in the Round2.
My questions are:
1) Can the combination of being a re-applicant & a R2 applicant work against my application ?
2) Is it expected that the GMAT score should show a big (specified) leap in all sections or in some specified sections ?
3) How much weightage does The ISB place on past academic record?
I guess my query was missed on page 51 and am reposting the same.
I am applying to ISB for R1. I believe that my profile is quite different. I am from govt. services and my job nature is varying. I have more than 5 years of experience in areas like Technology Forecasting, Technology Development Assistance, Public Private Partnership for higher education, E-learning initiatives, Industry-Academia Interaction, SME cluster development etc.
I have published papers and presented them in National and International conferences. I have worked in programmes of National importance and also worked closely with few international organizations like World Bank and National Academies.
I am an M. Tech by qualification and have good academics and decent extra curricular. I believe I can bring lot of diversity in the class room.
Can these facts cover up a relatively low GMAT score? I am not really asking for a profile check. I just want to know whether you have such kind of profile in previous batches and whether my exp is really diverse or not and would help me even with a relatively lower GMAT score?
Dear Dr. Menon I am a doctor with 3.5 years experience. I recently gave GMAT and got 750(essay 5.5). i have a few doubts regarding admission process.
1. Does ISB take MD period as work ex.? I think they should because unlike MSc courses, MD means full time hospital duty(for which you get paid ~25k/mth).
2. Does ISB take internship period as work ex.?
3. Doctors like me don't have experience in the business world. So how do you assess us when it comes to our business acumen?
4. What is the average GMAT score and average work ex of the doctors who joined the class of 2009?
5. What are the fields where doctors diversify after their stint in ISB? Will I be able to take electives which help me further my career in healthcare management?
Thanks for all the lovely replies you have given earlier. I will be looking forward to your reply
regards Dr.somnath
Dr. Somnath,
1) & 2) Any MD work exp/internship that was a part of your academics will not be considered towards work exp.
3) What we look into is your experience and expertise in your own field and not your business acumen while assessing the quality of your application. It is ISBs duty and responsibility to impart the requisite business acumen to you during the course. 4) We dont capture the GMAT data in this format. The average work experience is 7 years. 5) There are diverse options available after graduating like Consulting- healthcare practice, Pharma marketing, healthcare services delivery system etc. Admissions Team
Could you please tell me, how a one year MBA course would be beneficial to me, considering the fact that
a) I am not in a hurry to complete my graduation, and b) am not aiming to recoup my investment quickly.
Thank you very Much
Anind
Anind,
A one year course allows you to return to work earlier. The investment required in a one year programme is lesser considering the opportunity cost. It is good that you are not in a hurry to complete the programme. This will give you an opportunity to work for an additional year before you come into the programme giving you that added exposure and knowledge to assimilate more knowledge in the programme.
I was informed that ISB would be opening an alumni referral scheme that can be used by the ISB alumni to post their recommendations for current applicants. I have already submitted a completed application. I am awaiting the launch of this scheme so that a couple of the alumni, who are in my acquaintance, can submit their recommendations.
I had mailed pgpadmissions in this regard but haven't received any response yet. Kindly let us know when this scheme is expected to be launched.

Delguyin,
Prima facie I would say your profile would be suitable for admission to the ISB. We will definitely look in to your diverse background and the depth and breadth of your work exp. However, I would like to add that the admissions to ISB are very competitive and your actual admissions will depend on the quality of your application which include essays, your past academic record, your GMAT score, the recommendation you get from the reviewers whom we will contact and your performance in the interview (assuming you are called for the admission interview). Please note that the median 80 percent range of GMAT score at ISB is 660-760. This implies that there are students with a lower GMAT score but who might have a strong application otherwise. We have students with high GMAT scores but they may be weak in certain other areas. So, your overall application would need to convince the Admissions Committee of the candidate's suitability

I had one more query. i am a mechanical engineer. presently i work for an organization which is into Computer Aided Engineering(CAE).CAE is basically the virtual world of design and analysis of mechanical systems.so whether the organization fall in the realms of the conventional IT/ITES?
1) What would be the historical average GMAT score for CA and other Finance professionals? Would be quite a lot lower than 730?
2) I do not have certificates for an award that I won in my college days. Do I explain this in my Optional essay or let it be?
3) What is ISB's policy on the "essay review" (not essay writing) services that are offered by various agencies? Is it acceptable to go for this? (I did ask this question earlier, but not sure I understood the reply fully)
Thanks,
Forbidden_apple,
1) We do not capture this data. Please note that the median 80 percent range of GMAT score at ISB is 660-760. 2) Yes, you can mention this in the optional essay 3) This decision depends entirely upon you. In our opinion, your essay reflects your personality and this is what you will convey during the interview (assuming you will be short listed). We will advice that you let them be as original as possible. Instead of agencies, it is always advisable to seek suggestion from good B-school alumni/friends.
Dear Sir, I am glad that ISB admissions team is helping us with our queries. Here are my queries 1) Is there any benefit of submitting the application well before the deadline ? Are the applications read in the order in which they are received ? 2) I added two evaluators in the ISB aplication system after their assurance of prompt submission. However, one evaluator is not very responsive and now I am skeptical whether I will get a good recommendation on time. ISB application system does not have option to delete an evealuator and add a new one. As a backup, I would like change my evaluator if needed. What is the process for changing an evaluator ? How long it takes ? 3) I did a summer internship in my pre-final year in college. It was an unpaid internship. I tried to list that experience in the work experience section. But the system is not allowing me to save the details with the salary as Zero. What can I do ? I am not getting any replies to my emails to PGP Admissions. Expecting your comments on the above queries. Thanks, Vivek.
Vivek,
1) No, applications may not necessarily be read in the order of receipt. We encourage early application so that in case there are any corrections or documents required, it can be done before the deadline. 2) To expedite the process, please call us at 040-2318 7474.
3) You cannot list any training done during your academics as work exp.
