I agree that the line between Ivey/Rotmans is VERYYYY thin. I would prob. give Ivey the edge in regards to consulting and Rotmans the edge in finance. But as you mentioned, both top notch schools. Every year they are either 1st or 2nd in Canadian rankings...and you cannot go wrong with either. It is all all matter of preference.
I personally feel strongly that Ivey's career centre is very good at placing ppl without an internship, especially in the consulting field.
Yeah, I'd say you summed it up quite well. In my opinion, the big difference between the two is the 1 year vs. 2 year format (although I guess the Case Study vs. Integrative Thinking thing is important too). Like you mentioned it all seems to be based upon personal preference. It's funny, I did my undergrad in Vancouver and there were a ton of Rotman MBA's out there. I'm out in Calgary now and i've run into a really high proportion of Ivey MBA's here. Can't lose either way.
On another note, did you end up posting your interview experience somewhere in this thread? I've got mine next week and figure it's probably in my best interest to do some prep rather than winging it.

Hey,
I did post it somewhere back, maybe around page 65 or so.....it was a pretty generic interview...bout 45 minutes...all the basic questions mentioned here...
well, i'm an indian who already has a Canadian permanent residence. So that should facilitate my chances to get a loan from the Canadian banks. Are you trying to say that it's more difficult to get in when you're an Indian?? Is it really that competitive to apply as an Indian? So what if an applicant is from other geographic areas such as Africa, Europe, or Middle East? Will such people have it easier than us to get in because they're not from such a competitive profile as Indians are? wow....
Hi MBAblackbelt
are you in Canada or India? I am also a Canadian PR holder but for last three years I am in Singapore. I have never been to Canada. I contacted RBC for loan, they told me that I am eligible for loan but I dont have any credit history in canada so I will need a co-signer. Getting co-signer from Canada is bit difficult for me.
So if you find a way to take loan from banks in Canada do let me know also. In the mean time I am getting approval from India and Singapore for loan. It will be better if I can get loan from Canada .

well what I've done is that I've signed up for a mobile line. So I use my Canadian credit card to pay phone bills every month. I've been a Canadian PR since January, so by January 2010 I will have 1 year of credit history. I try to buy everything I can through the Canadian credit card so that I can create a 1 year of credit history. Having at least 1 year of credit history will take care of this issue that you're speaking of. Do you have a Canadian credit card to use at all??
Bobby, wanted to share info on the current batch.According to Arun's post in Ivey's admission and recruitment blog,20% of the current batch is placed already.Regd. 2009 stats, the feedback from admissions office was that it will come @ivey website in end nov or dec as students are still posting job offers.... Lastly,I have PMed you a few days back with some of my queries, can you please revert back on them?:)

Very interesting article, and kind of scary at the same time. Seeing top schools not being able to place premier students in their field of choice is not something an MBA student wants to see. Hopefully the economywill recover in the next year or two.

Sorry for missing out you PM, I have replied to it..
Hopefully situation will be better when We will graduate in 2011...

No Dear, I dont have Canadian Credit card...I think I will try to get loan from here and later I will take another loan from Canada for clearing this loan... I heard people take loan from India and then paying off their all loan by taking loan from Canada,,, and they do so after 6-12 month of stay in Canada...hope this info is correct...paying 13.5% for indian loan is too costly...

yeah, paying the 13.5% is indeed costly. The Canadian banks charge about 1% or 1.5% max on the loan, which is way more feasible. Because I didn't have credit history when I first applied for the credit card, I had to give them CD $1000 deposit to hold it against my credit card until I can create a good credit history before they would release the money back to my account. You should do that the next time you're in Canada.
I'm really starting to get worried about my application to Ivey. Would you know whether Ivey sends out a ding letter by email or regular mail? If it's by email, then that will make me feel safe because I'm not seeing anything yet in my inbox

Hey MBABlackbelt,
I think Ivey sends out the dings via email. That is what I read on this forum when someone got a ding. But again, they might also do it via regular mail. Either way, no news is good news! Stay positive.

Thanks man. yeah, I think I remember reading on someone else's post that he got a ding via email, but I wanted to get a second opinion to be sure. If that's the case, then it means that I either have a chance to get in or waitlisted. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I also remember that those who got a ding would get it fairly quickly. Either way, I'll still prefer that to a ding. Like you said, no news is good news because I THINK it means that they still couldn't yet agree to ding me. lol

Yeah, I also waited about 5 or so weeks to get a response. When Niki called me for the admit, she said they reviewed my file dozens of times, so I think if they are taking a long time, you are still in the running and have a good chance to secure an admit....As you said, if they want to ding you, they would have already done so.

thanks a lot man for telling me this. it seriously does make me feel much better. oh well, better to reach to the finish line late than never at all. i hope so at least. i'll have to let you know.
I have a question to all ivey applicants. I am currently working as a project engineer in manufacturing industry in Canada and have 4 years of experience. My plan A is to switch to finance (corporate banking). If that doesn't work out then I might settle for an operations/leadership role in mfg or service industry. I have no interest in going into consulting.
What do you guys think, does a 1 yr program at ivey give you enough time to grasp knowledge of a new industry (e.g. finance)? How do employers look at you if you have wrk exp from a completely different background? I am guessing a lot of you guys are from IT background and are probably considering going into finance/consulting/IT. I like the case method at ivey and infact went for a class visit recently where I sat in a real class. I have to admit the class is full of brilliant students and case methodolgy works. That's what attracts me to Ivey. But the length of the program is the only concern for me.
How have you guys come to a conclusion that Ivey is your top (or one of top) choice? Pls share your thoughts.
@sam.j I think without an internship/exposure to the new industry it is very difficult to switch to a new field. One yr MBAs generally are not the best for career switchers. This is my personal opinion though...

wow thanks a lot dude. This info really helps. It's great to know that they send an offer or a rejection by email. Since I still don't have anything in my inbox, I still feel I have hope.
@sam.j I use to think the same that a 2 yr mba with internship improves the chances of switch , but after meeting with the alumni of various school including ivey ,I think what really matters is how dedicated you are if wanna switch to finance start working on it starting now CFA is most saught after thing in us and canada it will give u advantadge .Rotman is better for finance than ivey although it has class of 200+, compare to ivey it has more students to place but if u get good grades and have cfa should not be hard to move to finance .IB is a tough nut to crack but i see u r interested in cooperate finance so that should not be hard . In case u r interested in consulting ivey is the best Mckinsey,BCG prefer Ivey over any other institute in Canada and for consulting you need good grades as Consulting firms only interview toppers (they prefer them a lot unless u were in mckinsey ).
Did i mention cfa covers many of ur first semester subjects does not matter from where u do mba or its 1 or 2 years FSA (Financial Statement Analysis )Accounting and Economics in CFA Level1 will cover 3 of ur subjects
