Ivey Mba

hey arul and anubhav,
any tips on writing essays.since its my 1st application,so bit over-cautious/nervous...after writing the essay ,whom should i consult to knwo whether its in flow,error-free grammatically, and interesting enought to catch the adcoms eye, once am done with it ?

You can share the essay with me provided it doesn't violate any IPR violations:) I'll provide you my inputs a I have alredy gone through the entire application process for a number of b-shools earlier.

IN return you can guide me with GMAT as I have a lower score of 650 and would want to break the 70 barrier. What say?

Cheers..

hey anubhav,
no probs bro..even without the offer,if u had asked about for any kind of help in gmat ,i would have agreed 😃 do let me know if i can be of any help to you in anyway-materials/suggestions.
btw, once am done with essays ,i will ask for ur review..thnx
Correct me if am wrong,i dont think Ivey or infact any canadian univ is as generous with scholarship as US univs...so will ivey give schoarships to candidates with higher gmat scores??
Though if it does give schaolarships, then thats good for all of us!!!

Thanks

Hi all, considering aplying to candian B-school

Hi all,

i have recently joined pguy forum and a Ivey aspirant. Need some advise from expert users here.

My profile: 10+ years of expereince. 5 Years in Enterprenuership (after graduation) and recent 5 years (Post PGDM from Top-15 Indian B-School)working with Indian IT/ITES sector. Currently i am Regional Sales Head and is based in Europe. I have given my GMAT a month back, have scored 680 (Q47 - 78%, V37 - 80%) AWA 5.0.

Education: B.Sc (Honours) from a decent indian university, was among Top-3 students in university during graduation. Did PGDM from one of the Top-15 Indian B-School, was among Top-10% of the class of PGDM.

ExtraC: decent extracurricular activities

Given my profile what are my chances for Richard Ivey Spring cohort 2011. I am looking for an International MBA either in USA, UK or Canada. Please also suggest some programs suitable for my profile.

Hey,
You seem to have great profile and ample work experiene /intl exp. with decent gmat score.Univ. which are more known for candidates with higher work exp. will suit best for your calibre..to name a few,Yale-US ,Duke-US INSEAD-Europe, LSB-Europe, Ivey-Canada..Since you have nice european work exp,mba from eurpoean univ might provide u an edge for your post-mba career.Just my thought.
Best of luck.

Hey Anubhav / Arul,

In the third essay regarding "best advice received", what should be the content or main thought area since there are quite a few things that crop up in my mind but 1.dnt know whether that particular thing is what they are asking 2.how to frame an essay out of a small suggestion /advice by someone..
Note - i believe it should be regarding professional field.
Your suggestions....

Thanks
Ankit

Hi,

Well, your profile looks great if not fantastic. If you ask me my honest opinion, maybe you shouldn't apply to Ivey. Yes, you may have your own reasons for doing it, But I would strongly recommend looking at other B-schools. Here's why:

1.) Ivey's average work-ex is hovering around the 4.5-5 years range. So being in a class with 3-4 students having the same work-ex as you and remaining having far lesser uts you at a disadvantage when it comes to the learning perspective.. You may be able to add a whole new dimension to the discussions but then, what is it that you get?

2) With a 10 year work-ex you would need to push a little harder to Ivey adcoms that why Ivey and not any other b-school who could take you in easily? The reaon why I am saying this is coz of your MBA from a premier bschool and also experience in IT sector. I presume you would want to go back to IT or related field In that case, Ivey is not for you

3) If not Ivey, then what? Well, in case you want to really study in Canada, look at Queen's University. Their program is more in line with the IT sector and is a 1-year program as well. Moreover, Ivey and Queens are always fighting for the top slot so the institute is equally good

4) Given your length and breadth of experience, you can consider another 1-year MBA at INSEAD. Their average work-ex is somewhere close to yours and the post MBA prospects (including salaries and profiles) are even better than some of the premier b-schools in US. I think given the info you have shared, INSEAD would be a far far better bet. C'mon, it' got one of the best ROI.

5) If you want to study in US, then go for the preier institutes such as Stanford or Wharton (especially great if your bent of mind is towards entrepreneurship). You could also apply to the 1-year HBA program at Harvard. Even at Stanford and Wharton, I would strngly advise you to go for their 1-year programs as you qualify for it.

I guess, I have ranted enuff gyan already. In case you need any more perspective let me know. will be more than willing to share all the gyan...!

Cheers..

Hey Ankit,
Well, advice need not be professional. It could be advice given by your family or advice given by a friend as well.
This is more of an open ended question wherein they intend to see how you think. The example you give should be thoughtful and meaningful at the same time.
Saying that you got great advice during annual performance appraisal is not actually advice.. but a feedback. So be very careful how you tread on this.
For starters, you can elaborate what all thoughts come to your mind and I'll do the work of striking the irelevant ones. Maybe that would help.

Cheers..

Thank you anubhav and superguy for sharing your thoughts. I am primarily considering US or Canada as my leadership and working style corresponds more to North America culture. INSEAD no doubt will be a good choice and i am considering the same. Queens - i am not too sure about the quality of program. I had attended 1 of their class, was not too impressed.

How does my GMAT score of 680 stack up against competition. Though it is balanced Q47 (78%) and V37(80%) should i retake if i cosider INSEAD, WHARTON, YALE & STANFORD - this was my first attepmt on GMAT and may be with some focus i can crack 700 mark. Is it worthwhile to spend additional time on GMAT?

700 & + gmat score is good on anyday. It becomes more essential in India because most of the applicants who are shortlisted by the univ. tends to be around that score. But then it is basically the main thing that can be used to differentiate between indian candidates as most of them have more or less same work domain i.e, IT.But whereas in your case 10yrs exp on whole and a major chunk of it as intl. exp is very strong factor. So, in your case the additional benefit of a 20-30 points change in gmat wouldnt be that big a decisive factor. But then as i said 700+ is always a good score. It will make your profile more competitive. If you have sufficient time to prepare and retake the exam then you should go forward.

hey anubhav,
thanks for the info..once am done with the essays ,i will consult you for sure :-)
thanks,
Ankit

do we need to send any hard copy of transcripts/documents to the university or do we need to email them scanned copies..if so then pls let me know what to do next...

When I had applied, I had sent across the hard copies duly attested by a public notary from India. At that time, I think there was no option of submitting transcripts online.
Just check on the website. In case they say that you can upload it, you can do that. Else get in touch with the adcom, they'l guide you

BTW, I have sent you a PM. Just check

Hi All,
Has anyone applied for April 2011 entry at Ivey school?

Hi,
I have created a separate thread for Ivey April 2011 applicants as this page seems to be having applicants and admits over the last 3 years, thought it would be a good idea to start a new one. The following is the link please feel free to post:

Good to hear damroo! I'm a recent admit and me too have gained a lot from this forum. Time to give back to the community 😃 I've just started a blog writing about my app experience with Ivey/Queens, for those who're interested you can check it out and get a feeling of what's it like. Hopefully I'll have time to keep adding post after the school starts. Cheers.
