Kota Diaries: Engineering Coaching in Kota

Top

More than anything else it's the toppers of JEE who have been claiming fame in the city of Kota, Rajasthan. The welcoming view to the main city, where the coaching centres are based, is of billboards of various coaching classes flashing their toppers' pictures.

Leading the pack is the hoarding flashing the JEE (Advanced) 2015 topper and Bansal Classes prodigy Satvat Jagvani's face at the Aerodrome Circle in the city. The road ahead of the circle is also the lined up with similar hoardings of various classes displaying their toppers.

The whole city is adorned with these hoardings, especially in the areas leading to main coaching sectors in the city. Roads leading to coaching zones of Industrial area, Rajeev Gandhi Nagar, Indira Vihar, Talwandi and Vigyan Nagar are majorly the destinations where toppers' banners are proudly flashed.

Although such billboards and posters are a marketing strategy of the coaching institutes, they certainly project these top rankers' fame too. Not only Satvat, but also other top rankers of JEE (Advanced) 2015 like AIR 41 Arshadeep Singh and AIR 65 Devansh Shah are present on the posters and hoardings of Motion Institute. Every popular institute has its own hoarding carrying their Toppers.

Nitin Vijay of Motion Institute told that the top rankers are the cream of the institute so in order to inspire other aspirants, these success stories are highlighted.

Aakash Coaching Institute also has displayed its AIIMS top rankers through billboards in Kota, even though they are from their Delhi Centre.

Pramod Kumar Bansal, Chief Executive Officer, Bansal Classes, admits that Satvat is popular among students for being the topper of JEE (Advanced) 2015. "He is certainly a star for the institute, especially because he has been the best performer in JEE (Advanced)," said Bansal.

The coaching institutes not only are projecting current toppers of JEE and medical entrance examinations but even the toppers of the previous years (2014) as well. Last year's topper of JEE (Advanced) 2014, Chitrang Murdia is still the 'Poster boy' of Allen Career Institute. His posters are still occupying the wall of the institute in Indira Vihar, Kota.

When asked about such billboards showing top rankers, a coaching aspirant, Vibhuti Jain, agreed that it is motivating for many aspirants like her, simply because these toppers are well known among the student circles.

KOTA. Sheshansh Agarwal won the silver medal at the International Physics Olympiad exam. He is the only student to have won 4 medals in the international level from India.

Brajesh Maheshwari, Director, Allen Career Institute said, "In the final round, 5 students from India competed with 86 students from around the world."

The teenager believes that playing for the country is what motivates him and boosts his confidence. He also added that, pressure is the biggest spoiler for most students and thus they should study with a calm mind. "Being calm creates positive energy, which helps one to perform better," he said.

It hasn't been a joy ride for the youngster, but that's what made it the most memorable for him. "The most difficult part in IPhO was the experiment segment. The competition was edgy and everyone tried their best but it has been one of the most remarkable and memorable experience for me" he added.

Sheshansh is the only student to win medals for India for 4 consecutive years. He has won a silver medal in the International Astronomy Olympiad held in South Korea in the year 2012. The following year he won a Bronze and Gold consecutively for two years in the International Olympiad in Astronomy & Astrophysics.  The 4th time he has represented India and won laurels.

Sheshansh also has secured the 4th AIR in JEE Main 2015, and is a state topper, while his rank in the JEE advanced is 58. Sheshansh, like most toppers, aspires to complete B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT Bombay. Sheshansh has also been a scholar of the prestigious National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) and, Kishore Vigyanic Protsahan Yojna.

The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) is an annual competition held internationally in physics for secondary school students. It involves individual theoretical and experimental competitions in Physics. The 46th IPhO was held at Mumbai, India from 5 to 12 July 2015. The event is organised by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, a national centre of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, an autonomous institution under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy, as well as a Deemed University.

A gold medal is awarded to the top 8% of the participants. A silver medal or better is awarded to the top 25%. A bronze medal or better should be awarded to the top 50%. The 'Honourable Mention' or 'Better' is awarded to the top 67%. All other participants receive certificates of participation. The participant with the highest score (absolute winner) receives a special prize, in addition to a gold medal.

The preparation for JEE is not an easy one. Studies and stress go hand in hand when it comes to the entrance exam prep. Career Point at Kota, Rajasthan, organised a seminar for the students on keeping stress at bay and improving their mental health. The speakers for this event were Dr. Vijay Sardana a leading Neurologist of Kota and also the Superintendent of Maharao Bhim Singh Hospital of Kota.

Like our body, the mind too needs to be exercised. And this is possible through reading books, and poems, solving puzzles, crosswords, and quizzes too. Dr. Sardana stressed on the importance of taking up challenging tasks to ensure that the brain will also be healthy. But it's not only challenges, relaxation too is very vital when it comes to keeping the mind fit.

Dr. Sardana was questioned by the students, on a wide range of issues. The dilemma that most students face was one of the first questions asked- the ideal time to study: Morning or night? "The perfect time is what the student feels comfortable with. One can study late in the night or early morning, but should sleep for at least 7 hours. Then there are no issues," he said. He added that the students must refrain from changing their study patterns frequently. This will eventually affect the health and also the efficiency in finishing studies.

Dr. Sardana stressed on the significance of a short nap for brain health. "If one studies for long time and then takes a short nap of 15 to 30 minutes it rejuvenates the person and enhances efficiency."

When some students questioned about listening to music while studying, Dr. Vijay Sardana said that studying requires tremendous concentration and music would be a distracting aspect. If a student cannot concentrate then they might not be able to perform well. However, he said that there would be few geniuses who can study while playing music in the background.

"Good Physical health is linked to Good Brain health, which is important for not only students but everyone. People should spare time for exercise," he said.

The other most important aspect highlighted by Dr Sardana was socializing with people. Dr. Sardana said that socializing helps in exchange of views and activation of the mind. When asked about the use of social networking sites for that matter, he said that social networking sites can also be a tool for socializing but instead of virtual world, socializing in person can be more beneficial.

The incidents of depression and suicides committed by students in the coaching capital of Kota have been on the rise. The best way to tackle depression was by providing the students with counselling. He said that the student with suicidal tendencies should not be left alone and should be guided as soon as possible.

The seminar was held by the Neurology Care and Research Foundation, Kota whose President, Dr Anshu Sardana and Secretary, Dr Sushil Soni were also present, along with Directors of Career Point Institute, Kota, Om Maheshwari and Shailendra Maheshwari.

Around 165 students of the Union Government run Jawahar Navodaya Vidhyalaya (JNV), Bundi, a residential school meant for poor and rural students, have scripted success in the JEE Advanced 2015. A feat which was made possible with the help of free coaching provided under a joint initiative undertaken by Resonance Coaching Institute of Kota with the assistance of Dakshina Foundation.

This year alone, a total of 50 students from JNV Bundi have been selected in JEE Advanced, 2015. Principal of the JNV, Bundi, Ratan Lal Mali says, "It is a matter of great pride and satisfaction that 50 students out of batch of 56 students of JNV, Bundi have cracked JEE Advanced, this year. Last year, total 47 students  had achieved success in IIT-JEE out of 52 students."

The joint initiative started in 2009, which initially saw 17 students getting selected for JEE. The numbers since then have been soaring.

Coaching for IIT-JEE is considered a privilege of the students hailing from affluent families, but for this group of students, coaching in the engineering hub, has been made possible only because of the initiative. And these students of JNV, Bundi have made the best use of this free coaching facility provided to them by Resonance Coaching Institute of Kota for cracking IIT-JEE.

Managing Director, Resonance Eduventures Private Limited, Kota, R K Verma said that their institute along with Dakshina Foundation are providing free coaching to the students of JNV, Bundi from last six years under their social initiative whereby both the organizations bear the coaching fees jointly. "The faculty of Resonance Coaching institute used visit the students daily in order to provide free coaching to them," he said.

Jitendra Singhadia, a student from the school said, "We have made it in IIT-JEE with the help of free coaching, otherwise it would not have been possible for students like me."

This school is run by Union Human Resource Development Ministry wherein students are categorized in 16 different categories including caste reservation categories of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Castes and others. However, all the students certainly came from modest financial background.

What

When one speaks of engineering coaching, Kota is the first name that comes to mind. Over 1.25 lakh students from different parts of the country and abroad arrive at Kota for coaching every year. Most leave the city, with top ranks and selections into India's premium institutes, including IITs, IIITs, NITs and others. What is the force that drives this tremendous success rate?

The answer pointed out was "Method of Kota's coaching classes".

Success of Kota came to the fore in early 2000s. This was the time when the All India Rankers in JEE were secured by students from Kota. It has not been just JEE that the students of Kota have been successful in, but even in other exams like AIIMS, AIPMT, RPMT and other engineering and medical entrance examinations. Mentors at coaching classes point out to the various aspects of the methods used in Kota.

Giving an insight about the key aspects that drives this success, Chief Executive Officer of Bansal Classes, V K Bansal said that the preparation for IIT-JEE is done as per the pattern of IIT-JEE in their institute. They also focus on the daily problem solving, providing quality study material and lectures, conducting mock tests, periodic tests and routine tests.

"Rigorous coaching, systematic teaching, quality literature and faculty are the contributing factors to success of our institute." says R K Verma, Managing Director of Resonance Eduventures Private Limited.

Director, Allen Career Coaching Institute, Kota, Naveen Maheshwari added that faculty is crucial since most of the teachers have themselves successfully cracked Engineering and Medical entrance examinations. "Along with teaching student, revision of the studies and establishing communication with the students about problems related to studies is also ensured. This personal level of understanding is very helpful." he said.

Pramod Maheshwari, Chief Executive Officer, Career Point Institute, Kota said, "Apart from disciplined study, faculty and regular tests, it is also the congenial and peaceful environment of Kota, revision and motivation are some of the highlights of Kota Coaching which has cultivated exceptional success in medical and engineering entrance examinations over the years.

Also easy availability of accommodation, food and connectivity in the city also helps in making Kota Coaching the preferred hub for coaching.

Kota has grabbed lion share in the IIT-JEE, AIIMS and AIPMT Examinations over the years. The success of Kota coaching can be gauged from this year's figures of selections in JEE Advanced, 2015, JEE Mains, 2015 and AIIMS, 2015. After around 25000 qualified in the JEE Mains-2015 Examinations from different coaching institutes of Kota in May month, Kota coaching institutes claimed over 10000 selections in the JEE Advanced-2015 in June. While Kota institutes also grabbed most of the Top Ranks in the JEE-Mains Rank list announced recently.

Kota saw one more suicide on Tuesday. A 17-year old student who had come to Kota to prepare for his JEE committed suicide by immolating himself and then jumping off the third floor of his hostel.

Assistant Sub Inspector, Mahaveer Nagar Police Station, Ramesh Chand Bhargava informed PaGaLGuY that hostel mates of the student, who were eyewitness to the incident, disclosed to the police that they saw Yogesh in flames while jumping off from the hostel building.  His body has been sent for autopsy to the Government Maharao Bhim Singh Hospital in Kota.

The family members of the deceased student have been informed about the suicide. The student had arrived to Kota on July 20 this year and was enrolled in one of the top coaching classes for JEE preparation. Police are still uncertain about the trigger that caused the suicide. "There has been no suicide note left behind, so it is difficult to know if it was pressure in studies or anything else that led the student to take such a drastic step," said Bhargava. As of now the hostel room has been cordoned off and the mobile call records are being verified.

This incident has taken the tally of suicides to 6 in the last couple of months. The most common reason for most of the suicides so far has been study pressure leading to emotional stress.
