“All this will not be finished in the first one hundred days. Nor will it be finished in the first one thousand days . . .nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet. But let us begin.” ― John F. Kennedy
As I sit down to reminisce, I find myself hard put to pen down my thoughts on my three month association with FORE School of Management. So many things experienced in and yet so little space to write.
It all started on June 17th, a day when rain decided to wreck havoc in Delhi. As I looked around the campus at other joiners, I felt good that I was part of college again. Having worked in a software firm, I believed I needed a break. My interaction was also largely limited to people with a similar educational background as mine. It is for this reason that the batch diversity is something that pleased me the most.
A good mix of students from science and commerce backgrounds ensured that there were healthy discussions in class. Groups were formed so that students from different backgrounds could help each other out. To ensure that all students were brought to a level footing, a 10 day orientation course was arranged where in basics of statistics, Finance and other subjects were taught. While Finance concepts baffled me ( Did I mention I am an engineer ?!), I instantly took to communication subjects and Statistics. Once the orientation finished, the first trimester started and with it – assignments, classes, presentations and some more assignments.
I came in with a pre-conceived notion about MBA being all about studies and who can score the most marks. However, it was only a matter of days before that notion was shattered. We got into the rigmarole of student committee selections within days of joining. Starting early mornings and up till late in night and even extending till weekends, the process created a buzz in campus. Students were running around looking for group discussion rooms, performing selection tasks, chatting up and taking it all in. It served to be a huge respite from the hectic academic schedule. While only a few students could make it to the student committees, the rest had fabulous learning experiences.
In hindsight, I could not have asked for a better one month in a B-school. It is with equal fervor and excitement that I look forward to the next 21 months.
Term ends but never do the the projects and assignments. After the roller coaster experience of first term we are all ready to enter "THE TERM TWO". Of course it is "THE" term Two because this is the term when companies start pouring in for summer internship program. With campus already buzzing with excitement everywhere, we are beginning to feel the competition out here. Not a day passes before we get a news of a company planning to visit our college (no doubt everyone is so serious these days !! ) The experience that these internships give plus the handsome stipend they offer is something no one would ever wish to miss. Students have already started getting placed and its just the beginning! Lets see how more exciting can this journey get!!
Introduction to User Experience and its Business Relevance
What does it take to make a company successful? While getting the core business functions is the foremost task, it is still not enough. UX is the key differentiator in today's world and the answer to everything.
Mr. Amber Krishan, Group Lead & Technical Director of Training, Human Factors International began with a question every company and every MBA student seeks an answer to. A graduate in product design from National Institute of Design (Ahmedabad) and post graduate in Design & Technology from Parsons School Of Design (New York), Mr. Krishan has over 6 years of experience in user interface design, usability analysis, consulting and research in the enterprise and consumer software industry. He has also been guest speaker at several events namely UPA chapter event, Connecticut, USA, Microsoft - Nokia Windows 7 Roadshow in Mumbai and Hyderabad and Appfest at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.
Talking about user experience, Mr. Krishan rightly said that UX is not about making things colourful, the coolest idea or quirky ads. Also, it is neither about getting onto every single platform nor about copying Apple. UX is about getting the business objectives right and working with customers to decipher what they want. The idea is to design a user experience journey that spans across all channels.
While the audience was enchanted by the new dimension of doing business as explained by the guest speaker, he opened up another unexplored avenue to the students- UX as a business discipline. UX leaders are known to outperform competition even when the economy is not doing well. As future MBAs, we should give UX a serious thought as it is considered a top strategic priority in the everyday changing business environment.

Finally aam aadmi wins! Well we can only hope that it's the victory of' the common man' and not just another ruling party. When I think about all the incidents of past one or two years that ended up in such a grand culmination, i really feel dumbstruck. Who could have thought a year back that this aam aadmi would rule the capital? Anyway after everything said and done, the big question is; what next. The stage is set; shot is ready, the curtains lifted and all the audience eagerly waiting for the show to start. Now there is no room for mistake. Will d party be able to stand up to the expectations of the aam janta, would it be able to turn all their dreams into reality and will it be able to survive amidst all these allegations against them made by media as well as critics. How would this party change the face of the entire capital with a flick of its wand? Is it really that easy a task? If not, this aam aadmi is not' aam' but very extra ordinary. The promises they have made to people are to be fulfilled, because they have bought votes through these promises. How would AAP do this? How long would it be able to survive with the support of congress? (Not to forget that the maximum charges of corruption made by AAP were against congress!!) What next, only time can tell...
FORE School recently organized a trip to Mukteshwar, in conjunction with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). The first of its kind for students at FORE, this trip promised so much and it is safe to say, delivered much more.
A group of 50 students, accompanied by college faculty and a TERI representative, set off for Mukteshwar. Located about 50km from Nainital, at 2300 metres above sea level, TERI has a development resource centre at Supi, near Mukteshwar in Uttaranchal called TRISHA (TERI's Research Initiative at Supi for Himalayan Advancement). The Centre's activities aim at improving the overall quality and quantity of agricultural produce in the area using various conventional and biotechnological means.
After a fun-filled yet tiring bus ride, we arrived at the beautiful campus in Mukteshwar. The attending staff made us all feel at ease by allocating tents and arranging for snacks. A couple of us set out to explore the campus. It was refreshing to see that all energy requirements were taken care of by solar energy. We could see solar panels across the length and breadth of the campus. Our tents had solar lamps too, recharged during the day, as the only source of light at night.
We had one full day set aside for a visit to the bio-farm. We were told at length as to how TERI was helping villages in the facility by providing employment and electricity, amongst other things. Post this session, we were asked to visit these village homes and understand how TERI could help them in future. The representatives then accompanied us to these villages where in groups of five, we had to interact with villagers. The subsequent one hour that we spent with them turned out to be the highlight of our trip. The villagers talked at length about how living in such a secluded place was difficult and how TERI had changed their lives. Provision of solar panels, rain water harvesting sheds and employment had made their life much better.
As a token of appreciation and with a view to sensitize them about education, we organized a small street play for the villagers. The locals made a wonderful audience, clapping and encouraging our efforts. We soon left for the campus, satisfied with a day that could not have been spent any better. With most of the activities limited to the day, we were by ourselves at night. With temperatures touching upto 10 degrees, bon fires became more of a necessity than a source of fun and frolic.
As we sat in the buses, ready to be ferried home, I started to recollect the incidents of the past three days. The interaction with the villagers made me realize that how life still exists without mobile phones and televisions. We reached FORE campus the subsequent day, reinvigorated and refreshed. Everything was the same – round-the-clock lectures, assignments, projects, class mates- yet one thing was different. A fresh outlook and a fresh perspective. The trip had indeed delivered on all fronts.
INDIA RISING
The year 2013 saw the nation unite, fight and strive to make this country a better place to live in, perhaps the first time after the freedom struggle. Maybe it was the anger and the frustration of the people against the judiciary or the growing anxiety because of the failing economy or the resentment towards the everyday emerging government scams or maybe all of these contributed towards the outrage.
Many Indians will be thrilled to see the back of 2013, for it has largely been a rotten year, save for some. This year has been rocked by shockers after shockers -- the devastation in Uttarakhand which killed thousands, the Mumbai gang rape, Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal being accused of rape, Asaram and his son being arrested for rape, and the Supreme Court verdict on section 377- the list is seemingly endless. While some shocks had us wringing our hands in despair, others made our blood boil, but each one of them did make an impact to our lives.
Many of us saw people of all ages coming together to protest in front of India Gate to demand justice for the Nirbhaya case and wondered whether lighting candles would secure the tormented soul some justice. It was also overly optimistic to believe that all those who gathered there were the ones who respected women and treated them with dignity in their own lives. But if we look at it the other way round, regardless of the means of the protest even if the whole uprising proves to be thought provoking for a few men and gives courage to some women, a better tomorrow is not too far.
With the demand of Jan Lokpal Bill, the motherland again witnessed a viral motion of the masses. The peaceful protests by the citizens in Ramleela Maidan were welcomed with laathi charges and water cannons which in turn reinstated in them the need for a better political system in the country. Hence, the year end saw the rise of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) by Arvind Kejriwal which promises to clean up politics after a stunning electoral debut that has shaken up the country's two main parties. But whether AAP will be able to do justice to people's expectations or will it be able to secure adequate support from Congress, the party they had been largely targeting till date, are some of the questions only time can tell.
The year 2013 has indeed proved itself to be a turning point in the history of Indian politics. The common man of India has now risen, to demand justice, to fight oppression, to uproot corruption and to take India towards prosperity.
Advertising – the word in itself spells excitement and change. A field that always gives the perception of excitement, a sense of fun, and the feeling that here 'something is always' happening. Amidst this excitement is a thought on one of the latest feat that advertisement world has achieved- capturing the attention of the online word. In simple words, with the onslaught of viral marketing, it was but obvious that the marketers will try and catch the attention of the ever growing consumer base on internet by posting ads before videos (YouTube advertisement being the prime example). Soon this turned into a nuisance for the consumers, and YouTube came up with the feature of 'skip ad'. Now this is where the true feat for advertisers lie i.e. coming up with advertisements that attract the attention of the consumers in such a way that you don't feel like skipping the ad; rather you wait for that small commercial to get over before looking at that video you especially logged in to YouTube to search for. Prime example – Google ad of showing 2 old friends connecting via Google, Airtel ads of videos for Re1, The latest ad by Pantene etc. to name a few.
Are we aware of these ads? Yes. Are we consciously not clicking the skip ad button the first time we view this ad because it seems interesting? Yes. And this is where the true magic lies… in managing to capture, understand and express that emotion/feeling that the every busy internet consumer does not minding a minute upon. It is without a doubt a culmination of variety of features – the storyline, the music, the presentation and of course the basic idea in itself. But some advertisers did manage to combine it all and present us with ads that allow us to not skip ads anymore. The work now is to come up with more such ads, the challenge is to know that the advertisement will lose its lure after that first view, and then it will be time for the next thing on the block I guess.
With life taking different turns every now and then,it becomes very difficult to express an amazing experience into words. Joining a B-school certainly brings twists and turns as in my life when there is some new experience waiting at every corner i turn at.
Right from studies and marks to friends and fun, it has been something that has certainly made life better in many terms. Even when I know a little i try to extract the best out of me, I have learned to manage little little problems and issues faced in day to day life. Even when i have different groups of friends I've managed to receive greetings from all everyday when i meet them in the morning. Life is not just about doing things but doing things in my own way.
On personal front, even after being busy bee, I somehow have managed to have fun and create memories in the meager time I get at the weekends. Friendship has a whole new dynamic in life now, its much beyond making contacts or rather all about building relations for life. Learning things that life will demand to apply and hopefully some moments to cherish for life.
Knowing the hardships of MBA, there are numerous positives that help to make a person a good human being at heart.
My life at fore till now, has moved at the speed of light. Normally, I would sit down and think about what happened in my day. There's not much time for analyzing trivialities. But you know, I still like it. It's like all of my life I was asleep and now I'm awake as if I'm using 100% of my brain now.
Whats really commendable is how I'm using the 24 hours which once in the middle of summer holidays would never seem to end. Time now is like the sand I've picked up in my hand. It pushes me to prioritize, to remove the negativity from my aura to realize whats actually IMPORTANT.
My Experience at
FORE
As it is rightly said, if it's not new at every corner, it's not life.
Every place one goes, he ultimately finds something great to look forward to. FORE has been an addition to the list of many exquisite experiences that have come my way as of date.
Upon entering, the very essence of PGDM program was evident when I met people of different kinds and backgrounds, hailing from extreme flanks of India and having varied experiences in their respective work fields. It has since been a learning experience, picking up things that are new and appealing and trying to apply them in my real life as and when possible.
People around make it possible to sit through classes, which frankly speaking appeared very daunting initially, given no past exposure to the subject matter being taught here. Gradually, things started falling in place and by the end of the term, I felt comfortable being on the same platform in all the fields covered in lectures.
The best part about the methodology used at FORE is the way it makes me bind with people who I never thought of interacting with, given the group activities and assignments that form a compulsory part of our curriculum. I got to know most people in my classroom through these projects, which in a way increased my personal bonding with them. I guess that's the main motive of such assignments.
By far, Marketing has had a major influence on me, as an entirely new concept that deals with real life experiences. Having said that, I acknowledge other fields which have made a place in my mind, but I find little scope for any of them in my future endeavors.
It is always a curiosity to know how the seniors will be, and I find myself in a place where there is no real demarcation between seniors and juniors, the former behaving in very generous and supportive way, not making any junior feel he is 1 year lesser in experience, at the same time ready to help out in any way even at 2 a.m.
The faculty, apart from being extremely qualified, seems very willing to impart learning, both inside the class and beyond, especially in areas that need extrapolative knowledge.
On the whole, I am sure it is going to be a fun learning ride with a lot of bumps and bruises, most of them leaving a mark that I may look behind in my life later and smile wide, realizing how the time spent here eventually became one of the best experiences of my life.

To achieve this goal, Ignite calls upon reputed and experienced corporate personalities for discussion over a pre-decided theme to enlighten future generation leaders with their vast experiences.
This event gives the students a chance to interact with individuals from the corporate world and allows them to assess the necessary skills required to get into the increasingly competitive industry. Announcing the first speaker of IGNITE 2017, Mr. Devanshu Bhatia, CMO India Today Group!!
An interactive session on the topic “Role of Personal Values and Ethics in successful professional career” was conducted by guest speaker Swami Shantatmananda, who is a senior monk of the Ramakrishna Order and is well known as an able administrator and spiritual mentor.
He presently heads the Delhi centre of the Ramakrishna Mission. Swami Shantatmananda talked in depth about teachings of Swami Vivekananda discussing topics like education, knowledge, and ethics. He said “Absence of dignity is more damaging to oneself, than to the society.” This session was extremely enlightening and gave everyone present insights about reason for our existence and how each one of us are extraordinary in our own special way.
Is there a difference in the placements of pgdm and pgdm ib students?
