Life@GIM (Goa Institute of Management)

Hi all
Today Dr. Christoph B. Rosenberg, Senior Regional Representative, Central Europe and Baltics,International Monetary Fund visited our campus and gave us a talk over "Challenges for EU aspiring Countires".He talked at length abt the economic policy of EU and the requirements from aspiring countries.
His lecture was important as there is a lot of M&A; activity happening in the European region especially after expected fears of US economy slowdown..
He also related the Indian economy vis a vie the European economy, which let us know where we stand at present..so on the whole a grt learning experience..

And now what Goa is famous for...we a grt party lined up this weekend by Razzmatazz & another important student organization...
Burrah..!!

Hi ,

Just back from a wondeful party ... It was the post placement party orgainised by the PGP2 and RAZZMATAZ , our own party club 😃 ...

The party was at Paradiso which is one of the best discotheques in Anjuna , just on the beach , the dinner was excellent ... we danced a lot ... it was an open discotheque so could even get the cool sea breeze ...

The drive back is always great from such a picturesque place like anjuna ... the roads are so so clean ....they just are out from a fairy tale book ...Its fun to drive on these roads ... I bet many seniors would be missing these great Goan roads .....

Had great fun , enjoyed a lot ... seemed a little odd to me .. that here we are all carefree dancing away .. and on the other side we have the anxious GIM applicants , biting away at their nails in anticipation ...

Its time to hit the bed... very very tired .. because of the nonstop horrible dancing that I did ;)

cya guys around

Hi guys,
am feeling truly nostalgic after hearing about the countdown clock.
The countdown clock is a unique tradition in GIM.a paper clock with a singular hand is put up somewhere on the campus where it can be seen by all.

the clock has marking from 30 to 1.

It is put up a month before the last day of term for the 2nd year guys.Everyday one esteemed member of the batch passing out will decrease the count by 1, so that they can keep tabs on how many days are left before they bid goodbye to their alma mater.

we generally get it kicking by letting the senior most guy do the honors on the first day..our case it was Gurpreet paaji...whos doin it fr u guys..Manoj Bhai?

PS: manoj bhai..in no way did i mean to indicate that you are less younger than the others!

Hi Gary ,

The news does travel fast , I was to post about the countdown clock , had gone out , and just returned .. and you beat me at this one :)

yes the countdown is ticking ... and it at the moment reads 23 more days to go .. I couldnt fathom , whether the seniors are happy at seeing the 23 days .. or were they sad ..

I somehow felt that they were happy ... they were happy that they still have 23 more days to be at a lovely loving place called GIM :)

We just finished the Kiran Bedi talk as a part of Ribandar Talks. In her speech infront of a packed audience Prof. Sarita D'Souza today recognized the efforts of Abhijeet and Amartya infront of Kiran Bedi. They must be proud to hear this.

Meanwhile, aspire is expressing his enthrallment about the talk through his gtalk status message!!

Kiran Bedi ... whom millions have grown idolizing was there amongst us in flesh and blood .. thanks to the hardwork and persistence of the Ribandar Talks committee .. Mrs Bedi herself appreciated the persistence showed by the committee in bringing her down here ..

It was such a pleasure to listen to her... and the one thing that struck me the moment she started her talk was the vibrant youthfulness in her ..despite being in her fifties , she had a childlike enthusiasm and go getting spirit in her .. which is so much in short supply these days ...

I who isnt that good a listener .. especially at public speeches was sitting at the edge of my chair , listening to each and every word that she was saying , her mannerisms , her enthusiasm ..

Frankly speaking I have never ever seen a spirited lady like her before .. And I bet those who were sitting next to me hadnt also .

She had very interesting anecdotes ... one of them was regarding the famous Zuari bridge.Earlier when there was no bridge people used to cross the river zuari using ferries , her black ambassador was a regular on that ferry . There used to be heavy traffic jams , and for the alleviation of that the zuari bridge was constructed.

Actually the bridge over the river which was constructed in the year 1983, was to be inaugurated by Mrs. Indira Gandhi. However, it so happened that Mrs. Gandhi could not turn up on two occasions and the bridge could not be thrown open to the public . On the third instance, Mrs. Kiran Bedi who was then the SP Traffic of Goa at the time couldnt take this official apathy any longer , she thought why should the peopel whom we are meant to serve suffer . hence Mrs. Kiran Bedi herself removed the boulders blocking the bridge with the help of her driver and then shouting out Aa jao aa jao with she herself leading the way from one side of the bridge and then reaching half way through the bridge she called out to the traffic waiting on the other side to also cross over calling out . Aaage badho !! . Daro mat aage badho !! and slowly the traffic from both sides crossed the Zuari river bridge for the first time and so it was ultimately Mrs. Kiran Bedi herself who inaugurated the Zuari bridge which incidentally was supposed to be called the Gandhi bridge had she turned up for the inauguration.

The next day there obviously was a big furor raised by the authorities about the bridge being opened without the presence of Mrs. Gandhi and Mrs. Kiran Bedi was ready to face all of it. The incident narrated by her infact sums up her character which represents guts and not fearing to take the decision at the right time without fearing consequences.

According to her, we as individuals have already been formed with our likes/dislikes, values, relations, friends, eating habits etc. and hence at a management institute we need to be train ourselves continuously for facing the future. Infact, a management institute which is a knowledge centre needs to be transformed into a training centre, which in itself is a herculean task. Also she said that she always has sought to assert rights and this is only a way of seeking justice.

She also played a video relating to a BBC HardTalk Interview of hers with the famous Tim Sebastian she had in the year 1999 which infact was being played for the first time in front of an audience! As she spoke about the interview, she stated that the preparation for an interview is not of a day or two, rather it is a preparation of an entire life and hence we need to act now. She also stressed on the importance of planning ones career, self-introspection and always being aware of where one is headed towards, stating that every aspect including the pros and cons of a particular lifestyle as well the choice of ones marriage partner are also important factors !!

Infact she called upon the audience comprising of management graduates of Goa Institute of Management to make a focused effort to achieve a work-life balance in their careers giving enough time to spend with their family. Stressing on the importance of constantly updating and upgrading oneself, she said that we need to continually train ourselves professionally and personally. Professional training is one that can be acquired through books and through management institutes, however personal growth is something that cannot be acquired collectively in an institute but it is through self-introspection and is possible only individually by on ones own efforts.

Finally, she says that we are what are because of the influence of the books that we read, the company that we keep, the people who support us through our life and hence it is important to chose whom we make our friends, our associations, our life partner etc. as these are the people who impact our lives the most and shape our personality.

The clock seems to have changed with the generations. It is more of a flip clock, like the ones in the cricket score boards of the good ol' days. Nostalgia is setting in. Dunno how I am gonna adjust anywhere else

Hi ,
Today we celebrated holi at GIM , and it was fun ... specially for me who was playing holi after a decade 😁 ... Right now I am reeeking of eggs ... and havent washed ...so just uploading a hurriedly done , unformatted document containing some pics of holi ..

Hi ,

I am posting this article written by gk_del aka Girish Khara .. He wrote this article for the alumni newsletter .
*************************************************************************
Its time to bid adieu to the place which has been my home for the past year and a half. I take with me rich memories, for I have been witness to scenes of joy with student joyous of having scored the highest in a course after working hard for it, to the scenes of pain when being stretched to submit numerous assignments on short deadlines, of triumphant moments after being placed in an organization which will give him the right platform to grow as a professional. I have being witness to the transformation of students into managers & of GIM growing stronger.
During my stay I have indulged in the usual B Schooler activites, Bakar, niteouts, rushhour etc. But I also indulged in some activites unique to GIM as a B School. For I will cherish the assignments written on the beach, the cigi smoke sessions with the prof at Casa de Cha or the case discussions at Genes. I will remember the getaways to the beaches, the intellectual discussions at the Morgue steps or the managerial bakar in the Hostel corridors. Will cherish the unforgettable case discussions in Mirchis classes or the submissions filled with comments based on the Macro economic situations in Golus courses. For my during me stay at GIM, the takeaways are several, the giveaways are few. I passout as a proud alumni of this institution which is housed in a heritage hospital building, but has achieved the reputation as one of the best B Schools in the country.
Apart from the academic learnings, I have experienced some of the most unique lessons outside the classrooms, which are essential in the making of a successful manager. The rowdy club parties on the OT first floor or the gun rattling sounds echoing the OT ground floor corridors with the residents undertaking Counter Strike Missions. The midnight cricket matches organized by the Morgue fraternity or the exclusive GBMs organized by the nature loving Hilltop gunners or the JIT entrance to the class by the admin residents. All these acts have taught me the implementation of management concepts like espirit de corps orappropriatedivision of workormixing pleasure with work. In true essence, GIM has been the best training ground for me before I enter the battlefield.
I carry with me this priceless treasure. The treasure box comprising of memories which will be fresh for decades to come, Experiences which have been the most enriching and friends who will be there for a lifetime.
Adeus GIM.
