Hi ,

Its been quite a while since I last posted on this thread ... was sitting back and reading what the PGP1 had to say ... they are getting a hold of things ... juggling assignements and masti...

Its good to see so many wonderful people around , It always is better to meet people who come with a rich experience having worked with good companies and finding them to be carrying absolutely no ego . I personally admire such people ..
Wow...its the only word I can say about the yesterday's mid summer ngt - a fantastic performance by all PGP1's and energetic support by the lovely PGP2's..... Simply gr8 ...
Hi Guys ... yestreday we had the Mid Summer Ngts - an event where PGP1's can show their talent n the event rocked ...
From Shyari to Dance performances ..... I thnk Gautam's shyari would be in peoples heart for a long time to go ..and his Chemistry poem truly rocks ....
Praty n Pooja, i thnk r giving Shamik Darvar a run for their money ..... the dances wre really meticulously crafted ...
Meenu was brilliant ...a gr8 performer ...
" Ganpat " was also bought to GIM .... :)
Darshus poems espoused love n melted hearts ....
Anuj was at his best wth his Guitar ...a special thnax to him cos he helped me to carry forward my Konkani katar ( Song )...
This was all was jst a snapshot of wht happened yest ...
Also the PGP2's responded by singing a song for us ...Anirudh's redention of Bula Ki janna was beautiful n iceing on the cake was Anant Sandus self composed Song...
The Ngt Rocked ....
I would also lik to show a email in wch a senior praised us

Hi ,
Today and yesterday we the alumni committee of Goa Institute of Management conducted the preliminary interviews for the junior alumni committee. A shortlist has been drawn up .

Its such a tough job to select and reject people , given such a time frame one has to check so many attributes ... There were so many candidates who were so good .. that at one point of time it was felt that It would be injustice to reject a few of them ...

It took us some time to narrow down our list ...but we are hopeful that what we have done should be in the best interest of GIM.

I am really thankful that I havent taken HR as majors or minors .. it definitely is a very tough ask ...

Tday was the inaugral function of Mecca and last year high achievers wre facilitated
after felicitation der was an event called "Sell A Pal"
there was high participation rate n some of the events wre quite humorous
In the end the team of Pratyush won the event .....
It was a gr8 fun

As you all knw GIM was an Hospital earlier ..... so of info tht is available on wikipedia is
The Santa Casa da Misericrdia or The Holy House of Charity, also called The Royal Portuguese Hospital: Today it houses a management school, the Goa Institute of Management. It is a heritage structure and has been left unchanged despite the pressures of housing a college. Unconfirmed sources claim that this Hospital is Asia's first one.

How can bosses be made better bosses? A manager is not a blue-eyed, square jawed Frankenstein monster who works all the time. Better results can be achieved by managing the managers themselves. With these strong words of Mr. Gopalkrishnan, Executive Director of Tata Sons, Castalia `07, a Goa Institute of Management`s student driven initiative commenced in the presence of top business speakers and delegates from IT, consultancy & manufacturing sectors across India .The event took place in Club Mahindra Resort, Varca beach on August 11 and 12, 2007.Castalia 07 invited the top business personalities from the leading companies to examine the implications of the most relevant HR issue affecting industries, that is, attrition. It acted as the platform for people from all industry sectors to discuss the causes and possible solutions on How to retain and engage talent in their companies. Participants were enlightened in the presence of eminent personalities like Derrick Barton CEO, Centre for Talent Retention, US; Mrs. Jo Verde Senior Director, JeMM Consultants, Canada; Mr. E. Balaji COO, Ma Foi Management Consultants; Mr. Anil Sachdev CMD, Grow Talent Co. Ltd.; Mr. S.V Nathan, VP Region 10 HR, Deloitte India; Mr. K. Sreenath, Head HR, South Asia, Computer Associates; Mr. Vaishakh Kelkar, President, sales & marketing, Myadrenalin; Mr. Rajeev Kumar, HR Business partner manager, SAP and Ms. Lekha Sista, VP HR Sumtotal systems.

Mr. Derrick Barton began his speech by subscribing to Dr. Gopalkrishnans views that employees leave their bosses and not their companies. He urged the managers to make a difference to their organization. He alluded to the fact that Jeff Immet ceased the practice of removing the bottom 10% of the employees, as that was not worth their time and resources. He deduced from this that even a great organization like GE is forced to change their practices of dealing with their employees for better management.

He involved the audience in different games and participatory sessions, the objective of which was to find out what made people stay at their jobs. The results once again proved that it was largely the work variables and some managerial activities that were critical.

He underscored several ideas during his speech which can be summed up in the following lines:

General understanding of managers should be crystal clear. They have to know what they are doing.
Managers have to play an active role and involve employees to engage and retain.
If the employees do not get the right feedback, they do not get close to the organization.
It makes a difference when managers think about each employee.

Ms. Jo Verde stressed on the importance of HR as a business function. According to her, HR is not fluff, it is a critical business process involving three critical areas; job, leader, & organization. She stressed on the importance of all the members of the team having similar values which would result in business engagement driven by passion saying, Any system you put in place is as good as the people who use that system and are administering it.
Mr. E. Balaji talked about approaches to employee management and on the menace of post offer drop-outs. Emphasized on the poll of 23,000 employees cited in Stephen Coveys -The 8th Habit where only 37 percent said they have a clear understanding of what their organization is trying to achieve.

Mr. Rajeev Kumar believes that Retention is a day in and day out process. Speaking on the role of HR software in retaining talent, he said technology can be an aid to overall management. He talked about how the effective working of a differentiated hr pattern and gave a 10-20-70 module 10 percent on classroom training, 20 percent to mentorship and coaching and 70 percent on job program. Using these tools he emphasized that, we must become as good at developing great people as we are at developing great software.

According to Mrs. Lekha Sista , the goal of strategic talent management is to ensure that every individual takes a lead to move forward.

The gist could be summed up in Mr. Derrick Burtons words to managers that it is extremely important to Make work count for the individual in order to retain talent in your organization.
