Life@GIM (Goa Institute of Management)

Kids,

"It was the rainy season of 2011 and one brave soul ventured alone into the wilds to get some tea but all he could get was beer, so he drank and drank till the bartender locked him out. He vowed never to come back again but he didn't know that he would have to come there again and again and one more again."

Now don't get confused, I just wrote it coz I so much wanted to start this post with "Kids" (HIMYM effect). It has no effect or resemblance to/on any cat, dog, pig, iguana, troll or human for that matter neither does it represent my views. It.s just some random bullshit so please ignore it. Period.

So...its been a while.....i know, but its not my fault. The days have been crazy and the nights are insanely day like. We are almost bang in the middle of our first trimester and the reality has started to sink in. The varnish has worn off and what lies in front of us is the naked truth of MBA.

OK.....I was being overly melodramatic there but believe me when I say that (based on my limited experience :)) that the course really gets you out of your skin, I actually mean it.You do things which you never would have thought doing, you don't sleep, you start spewing stupid jargon the moment you are in the class.....you try to read ET, you start forgetting the concept of 24 hrs, you try to relate everything with "customer satisfaction".....and you do "haiyaaaah" 😛

The rain never stops here but on the bright side, you get used to it and start enjoying it and the surroundings. Goa is just majestic in rains, the greenery around leaves you all "bagh bagh". Your biggest weapon here is "the umbrella" and also priceless. Without it,well...... you are a lost soul drenched in rains and people with umbrella sniggering at you.....sob sob!!!

The whole month has seen a plethora of activities right from the (mis) adventures of the freshers party, gruesome JCC selection processes, Piyush Pandey talk :), surprise tests, assignments, case studies, getaways to baga, panjim, CSR activities and preparation for Samriddhi.....(panting!!! panting!!! drinking water...and three more pants later!!!) . In between all these you still get time to unwind and thats what i love about this place. You can never feel the pinch here........and thats the beauty of GIM, it just embraces you in the spirit of its adventurous journey and you absorb all that comes your way.

Pardon me for excluding details of classes and other activities. I just cant drag myself to write about wat we learn in class. It just freaks me out. Hope somebody writes about the other details. The thing is am more of a macro guy than a micro one :D

Not to forget Samriddhi............the National Conference and Business School Meet hosted by Goa Institute of Management is going to be held from 19-21 Aug. We all are super excited about it. And hope it will be a grand success.

Its been 50 days since I arrived here and every single day has been fun......Ok.......few days were hectic........few were sad.......but it was funnily sad :). I cant exactly explain what does that mean but it just sounded deep.......you know like philosophy and deepak "spirituality" chopra kinda stuff....so please dont judge me on my spirituality quotient, I set standards for shallowness :P

Oh one more thing, met Remo Fernandes @Inox.....awesome person....absolutely no frills.....clicked few shots with him. I wonder why my friends stopped me when I was on the verge of asking him to sing the "o meri munni song " 😛 ........just kiddin!!!, I just asked him why did he come to watch HP7 movie.........Bazzingaaaaa.......Kiddin again!!!. Not anymore, I promise, seems like the fear of assignments is taking its toll on me. Its better I sleep, have to go to Surla village tomorrow for CSR activity, dnt want to scare the farmers :)

Later,

Abhishek

hi,
i am a future student of GIM and so i regularly read this thread. But i feel this years batch is that not active on pagalguy. No updates nothing. It feels bad to see this thread not gettin updated daily. I know mba life is very busy and strenuous . But stil previous batch students used to manage and give regular updates.
Hope to see this thread updated regularly. COZ i luv reading it...

My greatest fear while writing this post is to get exposed for the psycho that I really am...for it will take every ounce of my restraint to steer clear of the superlatives that I really want to use. Anyway, before reading this post I want to request you to either read this through to the end or dont read it at all, cos in more than 3 years of posting on pagalguy, never have I poured more heart into a post. This is for all you guys out there, historic figures and brand new friends...for making me realise how much I really love "all things GIM"...be it on the banks or on the top of a secluded mountain.

I had one more day of leave in handand I had absolutely no intention of going back. But as my luggage was still back at Ribandar I had no option. My spirits lowered faster than the bike on the downward slope to Sanquelim bus stand. Though I had no connect with the new campuswas there for the first timeyet leaving it brough back the same sense of separation which I felt while going back home the last time around. The past 2 days were an unforgettable experiencemet great people, gave gyaan and did babagirigreat fooddanced the night awayalmost had a hopeless crush (and still not out of the woods I fear)made some great new friends revisited the finest time of my life and relived an old debauched glory !!

Journey

As the new GIM is a green building, I took a conscious decision to make it a green journey with a miniscule carbon footprint. So I set sail to Goa on a Volvo and then from Ribandar, where I briefly crashed at Sanjay Sinha aka "Matrixisback" house, set off for Sanquelim on public transport. Armed with directions from fellow Meccan Srinath, I made a circuitous journey to Marcel from where took another bus to Sanquelim. Well its not to say I cannot afford a transport or that I am stingy...but after 1 year in sales and often travelling third class and flying club class on the same day..., I have realised nothing adds more to the satisfaction of an odyssey than travelling with the mango people. The final leg of the journey was the pilot ride to the top. I was still reeling from the greenery and the scenery when my heart was altogether stopped by the stunning neo modernistic behemoth that the spanking new GIM campus was....
------------------------------------------------------------------- -------

SHOCK and AWE

The gates of GIM were spanking new wrought iron ones, but deep down I knew it was a hallowed passageway that many would kill to get thorugh. As I walked through them, and came across the imposing structures of the acad block, the library, the mess...I felt proud to have been part of a beginning that had blossomed into something this grand. The stepped landscaping and the rolling hills in the background gave the place a perfect aura of a Monastery. But being an teetotaller veteran of many an OTGF Bucket party baccanalia....I knew, that only monks that would be found in this monsatery were the "OLD MONKS" 😛 😛

There was an ancient tree on the grounds which could have successfully auditioned for the part of the "whomping willow" !!

It took a while for the spell cast by the clouds gently wrapping themselves around the mountaintops in the vicinity to wear off.

The whole place had an uncanny similarity to a scottish highland village !!

I sauntered to the event venue and registered. Met Shadydivus, Anvika and Pratulika at the desk.

Participated in a faculty discussion and fought valiantly lest I dozed off. Later gave gyaan to newbie HR majors from the PGP 2 batch... I could see many a farzi marketing majors sitting in the Marketing group and giving gyaan...when their job didnt involve one bit of marketing !!! Atleast I was a bonafide HR Manager.

Pet Pooja

The gyaan session was followed by the lunch organized by the Alumni Cell. The lunch would have qualified as sumptuous if the rice wasnt undercooked, but this shortcoming was more than offset by the delicately balanced Xacuti with just the right notes and texture.

The carbohydrates courtesy the hard boiled rice were used up giving pep talks to new Meccansor whichever new Meccans I could find. It was great fun ushering the newbies into the world of fun, learning and nonchalant excellence that Mecca is. Soon the partying crowds gravitated towards the mess where we met Jaggu and Kailash.

JAAGU...an institution within an institution !

Its a fact that subsequent batches will never have the kind of connect with Jaggu because for them Jaggu will remain a person, a store ownera nice guy on campus.

For us, Jaggu was a PLACEa chaupalan area where gossip was exchanged, where love blossomedor like in my case, fights erupted. Kailash was not just a place which quenched your parched throats after hours of pointless CP, but where we caught up on the latest news on the tiny little TV.

Due to the strategic location of Kailash, it was the favourite haunt of lovestuck guys waiting for the object of their affection emerge from LH for a premeditated chance meet !!

The pepped up late evening soon gave way to the Goan nightand trust me the Goan nights, be it on a beach or a secluded hilltopROCK !!!

The rock band played and many people performed. The acoustics of the room played havoc with the sounds but one could definitely tell the band had talent. I will surely come back to GIM to listen to our in house rockers under more hospitable conditions. Dinner came and went without a trace but the food was much better than lunch. The custard was killer. Soon the right spirits started flowing and people were coming into their element. The DJ pumped up the sounds and the revelry descended into total chaos !!

Even though there was not much participation from people from my own batch as most of them decided their time was better spent exploring the bright lights of Panjim rather than being stuck on a hilltop I decided to make new friends to dance silly with !!

The GIM connect never fails and soon we were making trains and jiving in steps that would make any self respecting choreographer commit suicide But what the heckthis was our party and we would dance the way we like !! and dance we did !!!!

I managed to get some sitting people back on the dance floor...and the seemingly shy entrants later set the expensive badminton court on fire 😛 :P

Once the DJ wrapped up his console, the action shifted to the foyer of the MPHwhere I caught up with some old friends and then when the rains stopped, began my long trek back to H4and it was on this trek did I realize why everyone carried an umbrealla in the new GIM campus !!

In our times at Ribandar, everything you ever needed was withing a single roofOT, admin, Mess and jaggu. So if lazy organisms like me wished, they could live their entire sad lives without ever having to step out in the open

But in the new GIM in the Goan Highlandsif someone was stuck in a torrent en route from Hostel to Libraryhed be a mess by the time he reached his destination. So protection is a must 😛 😛 (please take note )

As I walked towards the hostel 4 gateslittle did I realizethe fun hadnt even begun !!

=====================================================

TOH SALA TU HI HAI SEVERUS SNAPE???

At the gates of Hostel 1, I ran into a bunch of juniors. Disha Verma the Meccan, Aarti the SAC and Mukesh the Placecomm among the names which I remember. After I had given them enough gyaan to last for a term or so, when I let slip that I indeed was Severus Snapethey went pretty crazy !!

Nitiskh aka Niks says dont be humble, you are not that great !! So even I, without being humble, would say it was the most exhilarating experience of my trip !!

Many of them said in unison YOU ARE SEVERUS SNAPE??!!!

As if Snape was a convicted Azkaban escapee and a known serial killer of MBA girls!! !!

Then a couple of them went in different directions and returned with some more vella people who had nothing better to do in life than sit and read my posts on pagalguy !! they even claimed they admired itI could feel my head getting inflated like Aunt Marge in book 3 !! sala maza aa gaya !!!

Who the hell says posting on pagalguy was a labour of love ??

If this is the reward one gets to post on pagalguy, then well if I could, I would create a new ID, attend GIM once again and post a bagful again !! I am sad my sack of memories is almost empty now.yet glad that its been a well documented ride !!

The conference at the gates of H1 came to an end and I soon found Srinaths roommy abode for the night. And thanks to Rushaad and Cedric, I ended up reliving the OTGF nights all over again.

Talking till 3 amon useless topics and then going to peoples rooms to disturb them in whatever they were doing.

PAGING NOSTALGIA ON IP@GIM !!

A small yet memorable round of IP bakar ensued after I commandeered Rushaad Darogas laptop for the customary IP TPa big thank you to everyone who replied and participated in the nonsense !!

For those of you who thought this much TP was enough for a night, you are sorely mistaken about the life of a GIMite..especially OTGFthe the cool capital of the GIM of yore.

ROCK ON !!

It was now time to raid Devashish drummer Goels room and play some Iron Maiden full blast. We headbanged to Trooper, Bring your Daughter to the slaughter and finally the proceedings hit the cresenco with the bass work of The Ghost of the Navigator !!!

The headbanging was the final straw and I was tired beyond repair !! Seeing that my frame may not be able to take any more TPI decided to retire to the room and slept like a baby while the night was still young at 4 am !!!

Next day I woke up at 10 am to the deathly silence in the hostels. Had it not been for the cleaning crews, you could be forgiven to think that the whole place had been abandoned !!!

With a knowledge that it will be noon before anyone came back to life, I went to freshen uponly to realize that all my luggage was in Goa !!

PURAANI YADEIN AUR FOKAT KA TOOTHPASTE !!

Next thing I do, a long walk to Jaggusand bought a toothbrush for Rs 13 !!

Then a long walk back to the hostel and saw a guy walking around in the corridor and followed him into his room and demanded toothpaste !!

Thanks to guys like me who never bought a tube of toothpaste after the first term, Ashwin Kaks Meswak never made it through the month!! Aaah the nostalgia of pinching toothpaste from hostel neighbours !!

I dont remember the guys nameand I am sure it wasnt necessarywe are bound by the GIM Connectand now by the debt of the toothpaste !!

The day was spent hanging around the campusjust going where my feet took meThe lonely exploration of the Sanquelim campus was a mirror of my during GIMjust empty, exploratory wanderingsyet self assured that I am in the right place.

Table Tennis at the common room and power lunch with the PRs were the highlights !!

Finally I found Vibhor Ronges room. Tab tak ladka kaafi hosh me aa chuka thaafter an hourlong chitchat with him, and it was soon time to bid adieu to the Mountain abode of some of the finest future business leaders of India

CHEERIOS BONITA !!

thnx jha!
finally a week later.. i (re)understood the GIM connect!!
The present batches may not understand the jaggu & kailash of the yore.. but what they/ thr adda's can teach a mktg student even 2day, is a lot more than one will ever learn in ne classroom... and the feeling/effort of actually selling to a jaggu or kailash.. u've got to do it.. to know it! :)

they are the true repositories of knowledge & Life @GIM..
Even this tym i lrnt smthing new thr.. !

@present batches : u'l get access to EBSCO's and other databases in future.. but not the 'bakar' @jaggu's & kailash's..!! spend ur tym wisely.. :D

PS : i dont think i've ever posted on PG.. but this once.. i felt compelled to ..

=====================================================

The past 2 days were an unforgettable experiencemet great people, gave gyaan and did babagirigreat fooddanced the night awayalmost had a hopeless crush (and still not out of the woods I fear)made some great new friends revisited the finest time of my life and relived an old debauched glory !!

thnx jha!
finally a week later.. i (re)understood the GIM connect!!

On the eve of Janmashtmi, this is what few of the students of GIM have to say about their experiences:

WoW..... in morning i was missing delhi ..... and i m damn sure 2 years later i would me missing the JANAMASHTMI celebrations @gim .... Amazing..... though spoke soo much still its ineffable ..... :)

Prayas would like to thank all the PGP 1s for their enormous support and enthusiasm..Hadnt it been for you guys, the event wdnt have been such a huge success! Hope u guys had fun because we definitely had fun organisin it ! and once again Happy Janmashtami !! :)

It was a night to remember!!! its so awesome wen everyone joins together!!! wat a celebration!!! from matkis to arti everything rocked!!! thanks prayas!! 😃 and a special mention of all who had decorated the jhula, made fabulous rangoli and did amazing decoration 😃 😃 wow!!! and yes i guess it was holi too 😛 if this was just a trailer i am wondering what holi would be like!!! just cant wait :-)

Happy Janmashtmi.. 😃 And what a way to celebrate that @ GIM.. Well done PRAYAS.. :)

Best.. matlab awesome... matlab fab... matlab dhaasu JANAMASHTMI yaar.. packed with dahi handi, water fight, garba, arti... best janmashtmi celebration ever.. thank you PGP 2010-13... and thank u prayas :)

Thanks to Prayas for making Janmashtami so awesome and memorable........i will surely miss it after 2 years
P.S : PRAYAS is a student welfare club of GIM.

Samriddhi'11 fever was not yet over but today it was time for another celebration @ GIM, Krishna Janmashtami..
A beautiful rangoli was drawn by some of the most creative hands in GIM. Krishnaji ka palna was set up and decorated with flowers... Common room was filled with a pleasent fragrance.

And then there was time for some fun.. Dahi handi phodo program.. All the teams tried their best to break the handi in the first turn while girls were continuously pouring water over the teams..
Later a puja was held in the common room and prasad was distributed...
Tout ensemble it was great show and everybody enjoyed it a lot....

Samriddhi11 unlike other B School events was not only a place where different colleges come and participate, enjoy, it was not only a conference and platform for people to show their talent, it was much more, it was a dream envisioned by a batch for coming years of its college. A dream to see GIM achieve something which it had been lacking for long and to show out the world that Goa is much more then what they think it to be.

22nd December, everything started with its first meet which was attended by only 25 people, but the best part it ended up seeing 200 people working wholeheartedly towards a single mission and vision. Things didnt go exactly as we expected them to be, with lot of hurdles on our way, from getting permissions from the management to arranging funds, but we fought hard, coz somewhere we believed, that if it has to happen then we will be the first ones to do it .

They say hardships make you strong this is what exactly happened with us, with every hurdle we got even more determined to achieve it. My favorite line from Spiderman-With power comes responsibility - for the core committee this was very true and we realized this as a big responsibility for us and there was always a fear of expectations.. but then this batch of 2012 is just awesome and there were people to give us support everywhere, and this number kept on increasing day by day.

When we entered back in June, with a weight to end Samriddhi on a successful note, it took us time to realize that there was another batch of talented 240 waiting to help us out . We were burdened with classes and this pressure and then soon we found new shoulders supporting us , these were the new GIM entrants the 2013 batch , ready to leave their marks and they did by their support.

19th August- the wait ended, it was time for hardwork to shower its colours and it did as results showed on 21st the feel of this success could have only be seen on faces and cant be described in words .

All thanks to the spirit at GIM which made it happen. As the name suggests Samriddhi -will keep on bringing prosperity in the coming years to Goa Institute of Management.

With 2.5 months already through and we all kind of settled in life @ GIM it is high time to put in a post I guess. To be frank what I have experienced over the last 2.5 months can in a way sum up my entire life. That is the magic. The magic that is GIM. There is no senior no junior. It is one big family in here.

Mornings
8:00 - krrring krrring dhikichiki chak chak dhiki chiki chak chak and all kinds of bizarre tones coming out of my GABA mobile trying desperately to wake me up for the 8:45 class
8:10 - %$@^%#)@@)( and all sorts of curse words. Press the snooze button and zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
8:15 - the second alarm rings. My roomie(to be called KS in all further posts) curses me and I curse the alarm and press the snooze button and go to sleep again.
8:30 - 'Abbe sala bangali uth ja. 15 mins mein class hai' KS

What the hell? How did this happen now? I had set the alarm!! Why didn't it ring? Spent a further 2 mins cursing the GABA. I run to the washroom in full force only to realise I have not taken the brush and rush back to the room again, collide with KS who spills his brush on the floor. We help each other up, I get my brush. Where on earth is my toothpaste???Kept it here only yesterday??. KS's toothpaste is lying on the floor. I steal it and rush to the washroom. He comes running after me. OW shit! Its already 8:35 and we see the girls all dressed up and strolling thru the campus slowly and steadily to the class and get red in envy. Somehow brush the teeth, wash the face(no time for bath) wear more decent clothes over whatever we are wearing and just run for life. A Bollywood style jump before entering the class to register our attendance with the RFID saves us as the professor who is already ready gives us a stern look.
We just avert looking back and quietly take our seats on the first bench,(ya you heard us right THE FIRST BENCH, something which we won't have even dared to do in engineering days!!) And the class starts and I suddenly remember that we are to be quizzed on a couple of cases. I happily open my laptop to do a quick read when the prof quietly comes to my desk "Laptops off please". Lightning strikes. And precisely at that moment you seem to forget everything you have studied till 5 last night (or shud I say morning).
Oye KS key issues zara bolna
&^#*!)@#&!()@**_@!)(&)@)#@) -some global and I stare blankly at him
"Yes now DDG and AG are now gonna present" shouted out the professor.
RELIEF!!!
At times sitting on the first bench has its effects!!!

GIMite for LIFE...

Being at GIM irrevocably changes the lives of everyone who attended.

It gave a different direction to our professional lives, personal lives for many and also gave us a set of friends we will cherish for ever.

So in my opinion there is a difference between "Time @ GIM" ie June 2008 to April 2010 vis a vis "Life @GIM" which will be from June 2008 to eternity.

So Life@GIM will always be where I meet another GIMite and we have a rocking time.

And such a day came last weekend when I was in Pune for official work and later crashed at non other that behr aka Ashwin THE Kak's place !

Deceptively named some "Bungalow" it was a cozy little place in a quant neigbourhood in Senapati Bapat marg.

We started off with a meal at E Sq mall and indulged in all the trapping of Fidalgo baazi..

Commenting on our lives...other people lives...the dressing sense of the women around...

The power balance in the relationships of couples sitting around us based on the hotness of the chick and lukkhapan of the guy...

Since our Fidalgo days we were pretty good at identifying lost causes when it came to courtship 😛 :P

The fact that both of us are incurable brand buffs we caught up on the faux passes committed by our companies in the recent past...I even tried to poach him !!

With dinner done, we opened a branch of OTGF in Downtown Pune !!

We called 4 of our old buddies and freid their brains in double refined Wipro Vanaspati Ghee !!

The rounds of bakar that began at 12 went on till 3 am...talking on random things and often downright lying...when we said that we were calling up escort agencies to hone our negotiationg skills :P

Day 2 saw my own roomie and Suajy Raikar in the house and we had a total blast catching up on the old memories...

Dinner with Raikar and Behr was way too good. Raikar was outnumbered by teetotallers..but somehow as is obligatory when freinds meet...I still did something I had been planing for 6 months and hadnt been able to find enough courage in me...and did that without the aid of Absolut vodka 😃 :)

The time in Pune spent with GIM friends was way too awesome and nostalgia reigned..

Thsi post has got nothing to do with GIM...but all to do with what GIM has done to my life for ever...

Thus it still qualfies as life@GIM (Baaki sab mods ki marzi...delete karna ho toh kar dena spam samajh ke )

Hi guys,

I am Gary from 2004-2006 batch. I went to the ribander campus on 15 august weekend. due to soem commitments i couldnt make it to new campus.

i am feeling very sad for the old campus which has seen more than 15 batches of students is lying almost in ruins. it is like a heritage structure for a GIM student and it is sad to see it this way.

i hope the management uses this space for some other educational actiities so that there is life in the hallowed corridors of old campus

regards

spidey

Man this is just the dullest and most lazy batch at GIM.
All efforts made by snape, aspire, etc to keep this thread the most awaited and most read by all users have been put down the drain.
Man no updates nothing.
MBA life is tough but it was not different for the earlier batches nor for other colleges.
This is really disappointing...........:shock::banghead:

Hi All,

his thread is for the aspirants, of the aspirants...by the crackers...

So I dunno if GIM Forms are out yet, but please ensure that the helpdesk thread is opened and running the very day the forms are out.

Also please post the link here.

I have repeatedly emphasized that in the world of facebook, oyr need for sharing our lives with the world is fullfilled with a single app on our andriod phone...so no one has the time to write so much stuff...

But then that is an effort we need to take for this thread is a repository of information from across 6 batches now...

So while u do a lot of things in life and share it...please make it a point to share some here also...thoda pain hai par le lo...

If I speak any thing more I will be pranded as preachy so I will stop...

lekin bhaiyya Gaurav Golwalkar apna lappie theek karwao...

aur shadydivus zinda hai ki mar gaya??

Aur vars jat kya sirf bandiyan paatne ke liye pagaluy pe active that?

utho mere bhaiyon !!

Cheers

After a long time I am active again on pagalguy but this time on the other side of the table. I can still remember the days when i used to be on PG 24*7 looking for any info regarding the admission procedure. And now sitting in my hostel room while answering the queries posted by aspirants I can understand what our seniors went through. The support we got from our seniors was immense.

We will definitely try to carry this legacy forward and help the aspirants in every possible manner.

Hi all,

After the post from tensionkilling which gave me more tension in place of killing it, I would sincerely like to apologize to all the aspirants, readers, followers, initiators and contributors of the thread for allowing the thread to die.

Coming to the recent happenings at GIM, we just had a rocking term opening party organized by Razzmataz. I am sure all the founders and former core committee members would be proud of the tremendous efforts put in by the JCCs.

There is a lot of buzz around events planned by PRAYAS for Diwali. I am sure that is gonna rock too. Also, people are waiting curiously for that one day when they can enter a zone where they cannot enter otherwise (Girls Hostel ) . We are two weeks into the second term and life is going on at full speed.

I would definitely give a detailed report of every account from Events to life in general in my next post and would try and get a few snaps for a sneak peak into Life@GIM but all this for the next post since classes start at 8:45 tommrrow and I have miles to go (assignments) before I sleep .

Before signing off, I would like to apologize again for inactivity.
Stay tuned.

Tension killing is trying to kill tension and he needs our support in doing it :)

Even in my time the GIM thread was a source of great solace....pata chalta tha ki sala akele meri hi nahi fat rahi hai...duniya jahan ki fat rahi hai 😛 !!

Thread thanda pad gaya tha apr I guess now it will make a comeback !!

Great going guys and no need to apologise and all...

Looking forward to good action on helpdesk thread and some nice dope on the current life at the new GIM !

As much as I would want to clarify all your queries, I also need to tell you that this is the wrong place for queries.
You can refer to the above thread posted b avinashkrjha for such queries.
Coming to your question, last year the average package was 8.82 lakhs and highest was 16.

For other queries please visit the above thread.
