Life@GIM (Goa Institute of Management)

It had been a long time since I had been in a bar, 2 years in fact. I mean on the other side of the counter. I had enjoyed my bartending stint during graduation and a year after that. It was good money with vibrant atmosphere and today I was there with the Razzies... It was Inception at GIM, which brought back the reminiscences. Inception is the musical fest at GIM and promises an awesome time with booze on campus along with quality music and food.

We started off with some in-house performances by GIM students before the guest band “AGNYA” rocked the stage. They performed fusion along with a jamming session in the end to raise the spirits high. Then we had more stunning stuff from our boys and girls along with Bhayana & his tongue twisters. Towards the end we had Gourab DasGupta popularily known as (GD) or the guy who doen't attend classes jamming with Agnya.

Yet another awesome night at GIM and many more to come since there is an event every night scheduled in FEB. “Shootout at GIM” tonight, where CS lovers will rule the battlefield. Time to close the post and open SPSS for cluster analysis. A different sort of analysis is going on in the Admissions Office that will decide who will perform at Inception next year. Those who are waiting for the shortlist to come out can grab a beer and rhyme….

Day-1Life couldn't have been any more awesome; I murmured to myself thanking all the thousands of Gods for everything they had done for me. Here I was, semi-naked, lying on a sun-bed sipping up my fourth bottle of Heineken since morning and giving cheeky smiles to those Israeli female tourists. The music in the background was dissolving like chocolate in my ears until some stupid bell started to ring. The noise was getting louder, almost unbearable, extremely irritating till it reached its peak like a parabolic equation. And then bang, I was up throwing my iPhone down in frustration and the alarm was off! I had screwed up once again. I had only 15 minutes to catch a train, probably the most important train of my life; Goa Sampark Kranti. Finally, the day had arrived. After more MBA interviews than the number of IPL matches per team this year, so many entrance exams, and applying to colleges where I know I couldn't get in; here I was ready to join Goa Institute of Management, God's own B-School. I had converted in the 1st list; I had the feeling I will. I never thought that non-engineering background was a luxury until I had my GIM interview. I had gathered all the info from a legend called Avinash Jha, our senior in GIM, oops! a PGP2. I was part of the Facebook group and just added 40 people in my friend-list that I didn't know anything about.I can skip the journey part cause it sucked, although I did watch about four and half movies, ate crap food and slept like a junkie for most of the time. I had booked a room at OGR (Old Goa Residency) and there were three of us who got down at Karmali Railway Station and shared a cab to OGR. There is one thing we Indians are good at; it's called “Contri”. Be it food, travel expanses, rent, cabs or anything else, it works everywhere. I spent the night in Karmali and shared the cab till our campus in Sanqlim next day, registration was supposed to take place today.Registration was smooth and fast enough till we reached Room No 13 in the Academic Block. I mean come on, how could they have Room No 13, isn't there a bad luck shit involved with 13? There were people standing in the queue or should I say queues. Hostel rooms were being allotted and once again it was “ladies first”. Another WTF moment, why could the girls hostel allotment not be done simultaneously in another room? They were obviously going to stay in a different Hostel block. I had felt sexually discriminated so many times before, but this one could have been avoided. Got the hostel room keys after 5 hours and the humidity in Goa didn't help. I was glad it was over. This is it, officially a GIM student from today onwards. I was proud of what I had achieved, met so many new people with whom I will share probably the best two years of my life. Then it started to rain, the super active FB group members passed by without saying hello, the room was full of bugs and ants and what not, the electricity was as erratic as the weather, the Cafeteria was more of a mess than a cafeteria, there was not a single beach nearby, no Israeli female tourists, no music in the background, no beer bottles, no fun. Is this the Goa I had dreamed of, I questioned myself? The answer was no. But my dream was more of a perception than anything else. Even the reality is more of a perception. “PGP2s will come next week. May be then it will be more fun”, I convinced myself. Then I looked at the mountains, so beautiful, so untouched, so unaltered, so natural, so peaceful, so relaxing. The biscuit I dipped in the tea had broken in half and fell down in the cup. All izz well, my heart felt.A new story had started, for around 240 young faces. Faces with dreams and hopes, story of joy, friendship and possibly love. Every face has a story to tell, a story similar yet so different, this is just one of them. Life suddenly had a new meaning. There was more to it than packages, appraisals, hikes, on-sites, parties, targets and deadlines. Life got on a new track. A new innings had started and somewhere in the mountains, a new cloud was taking guard.PS- This is a work of fiction, similarities if found are truly coincidental. But under any circumstances, this is not GLOBAAL!!!
wow..

Sunday Morning. 10th Feb.

It's 9 a.m and I get a Call. As usual, I don't welcome any calls in the morning.. Because I go to sleep at around 6-7 a.m. Later in the day, when I woke up, I realized that I missed an important call.. Call was from one of my friends who was trying to call me for MILSIM. For those of you who don't know what MILSIM is, it is a military simulation game.. The aim of this game is to give the public and corporate a glimpse of the way of life of the military in the battlefield and a sense of how to incorporate the same in their daily lives and work environments. MILSIM was in Campus and what a chance it was for GIM Students to play MILSIM inside the campus. I woke up at 12 p.m and it was no surprise that Half of the Updates and Pics on Facebook was related to MILSIM..

I thought of making it up by enjoying Inception which was scheduled in the evening. Booze was officially allowed in the Campus during the Event.. UB Group was one of the sponsors for Inception and KF Beer Bottles were on sale at a very cheap price. I grabbed a couple of KF Beer bottles and reached the Amphi-Theatre where Inception had started. It was all Lighted and crowded @ Amphi-Theatre. It started with the individual performances and then the Band "AGNYA" taking over. "AGNYA" brought out fusions that were never heard before with strong guitar strums and drum beats that left the heart dance to their tunes..

In the meanwhile, I grabbed another couple of KF Beer Bottles.. The evening welcomed more performances by the students and ended with a jamming session with the band. An evening that was filled with music, food and drinks brought people together and made Inception 3.0 one of the most exuberant cultural events of the country..

As I write this post, I realize that now there are only 26 more days of MBA Life left for me and my batch-mates. I have already made a big list of things to do in these final days. Hoping to complete everything..

It seems it will be a very tight finish similar to a T-20 Thriller...

After a long gap of 3 years organised SARASWATI PUJA.

GIM made me recall my graduation days, when we used to stay awake till morning for the decoration and all types of arrangements.

Hoping a better result this term, with blessings from, Vidya ki Devi: SARASWATI MATA

Please see the attached snapshots

In the days of Schooling and Graduation, Saraswati Puja used to be a holiday. At B-Schools, it's not like that. But we still had Puja in Common Room of one of the Hostels. And now, Visarjan would be done in the morning.

In another news, The GD/PI Shortlist is out for the Batch of 2013-15. After 3 years, Sectional Cut Off's have once again been introduced. It was quite disheartening for many aspirants as it was a bit unexpected because of past trends.

On 15th and 16th, Hriday, The HR Club is organising the first ever HR Summit at GIM, Goa.

All the Best to "Hriday Team" and teams participating in the events.. :)

Very surprisingly, Rains are back. It is very unusual that there are rains in the month of February. But we are very happy as the heat was proving to be quite unbearable. It almost rained whole night yesterday and now there are cold winds blowing all around.

With the countdown decreasing everyday for PGP2's, we had though that now we won't be able to see Goa Rains ever. But, God has something else in store for us. A Wish Fulfilled.. :)

Only 21 days left now.. :(

When it rains, the campus becomes so beautiful and pleasant.. :)

Here is the pic after rains.. :D

Sports Fest is going on at IMT, Gazhiabad.

And a Team from GIM has gone to participate in various events.. :)

In one of GIM's most epic sporting comeback ever, our basketball team fought IMT, their crowd support, their ref, their slippery ground etc to win the basketball 2nd round 39-34. In a game in which Darsan 'Jordan' Bhatt and his team, and our support and post-match celebrations silenced the whole IMT crowd... :D

Our girls basketball team - Raisa, Kshama, Aditi and Team followed suit by beating Great Lakes 17-9.. Top stuff from the girls.. :)

Our basketball team pulled off an amazing 39-34 win over defending champions, IMT's 'Aryans'...!

Huge amount of respect for them.. :-)

And not to forget the awe inspiring performance by the TT team to come back from 0-2 to win 3-2.

And Dheeraj Pershad put the icing on the cake by thrashing his opponent 11-1, 11-0, 11-1 to seal the fate of LBSIM.

And many more victories.

All the Best to entire team once again.

Come back Rocking... All of you will get a "Grand Welcome" at GIM.

"Team GIM"

QUIZ MASTER - Avinash Mudaliar
SANJEEVANI - Organized by Club Hriday

Like previous year, HRiday has again came up with the ANNUAL BLOOD DONATION CAMP.

Irrespective of religion, gender, community a huge number of people turned up from both the batches. The crowd and queue in the H1commonroom (venue) is self explanatory.

HRiday took full care of the donors, like serving them with refreshment and fruit juices.

Thanks HRiday for the initiative. This camp is really very helpful for the society.

Thank you: All the donors

Just few hours to go for 13th edition of WIZBIZ 2011..

The online quizzes organized had a phenomenal response of around thousand participants. The whole college is gearing up for this national level event.. :)

It is that time of the year when the PGP2s will be leaving. A time when every moment is to savour. A time when every walk, every glance could be the last. The time for last lecture. The time for last ride to Chorla Ghats. The time for last visit to Fidalgo. The time for last ride on Ferry. The time to experience everything one last time.

In another news, Hostel 4 witnessed Bucket Party last night. Lot of people participated in the party and it was one helluva night yesterday.

Matki Phod was another thrilling event that happened yesterday night. This event is one of the several events being organised by the "Sangmam Team". Sangamam - The South Indian festival which is celebrated with great enthusiasm every year. Lot of performances and Dinner Serving on Banana Leaves by the South Indian themselves is scheduled for tomorrow.. :)

Will bring other updates in my next post.. :)

Vanakkam Sangamam 2013

A college with myriad cultural backgrounds never ceases to dull down. It €™s that time of the year in which a series of celebrations take place in different parts of south India. Bringing this zeal on campus, students together organised Sangamam2013. A confluence of South India kick started with the Uriyadi, a pot breaking competition, where students have to hit a pot hung from rope, blind-folded.

Hot Sunday evening, the grounds turned to a battle field with men marching down and preparing to show off their masculinity. A game of tug-of-war began with a humongous rope, which could probably be used to tow ships! Students divided into teams of two and the tipping of the rope over the line began. Simultaneously, the cafeteria was decorated with beautiful rangoli designs done adeptly by students.

The cultural evening started with a devotional song and a traditional dance by PGP2 women folk. With graceful steps and swaying moves they captured hearts and left an everlasting pride for our culture. Bringing in the local dance forms, students put up brilliant, energetic performances one after the other. As an irrefrangible rule, all the men folk graced the stage in dhotis and an additional aviator sunglasses added spunk to the attire. Challenging these performances, men in suits and women in patialas from Punjab gave a power packed dance. Ultimately, a confluence in true sense.

As the curtains were drawn in, students rushed to experience the final and grand feature of south Indian culture, a banana leaf meal. A smorgasbord of dishes was served which could satiate hunger just at sight. Leaves were neatly laid down and volunteers swiftly and efficiently served the meal in batches and managed the growing crowd. With food in opulence, celebration of music, art and dance, over the years, has only lead to strong relations and respect for one another €™s culture and values. GIM -a place to be, a world to see!

Almost the classes are over for all the 2nd Yr students. Few electives are left which will also get over by this week. Most of us are already done with the last lecture of their MBA Course. :)

End Term Exams scheduled from 6th to 9th March. Very few submissions as compared to other terms. Unfortunately, I have a big assignment for the subject "Effective Negotiation" to complete..

Lot of events and functions are scheduled in the coming days and some of the major events being -

BASANTI CUP (Cricket Tournament)
BEACH PARTY
FAREWELL PARTY
CANDLE PASSING CEREMONY

Sometimes, I find it hard to believe that it has been 2 years.

A journey that began in June 2011. Infact even before that when I started reading the posts of @severus_snape , @vars.jat , @GauravGolwalkar .. The journey is going to end next month.

Will miss every moment spent here.. !!

The Much Awaited "Beach Party" is back
