guys, y do you (esp alumni) refer the Dean as "uncle" ! its rather strange... we will be entering the corporate world and im not sure if these things are acceptable. anywayz, please provide me some frank and honest opinions. I got to know from some students that the course is not being covered evenly . Some times the topics are hastened ?, not being good in infrastrucute or ranking is of least significance, but im very keen on the learning process that happens in the school. I'd really appreciate if a couple of more alumni could come up and provide their experiences in this thread, for the benifit of the new joinees.

Hi Vijai

Thanks a lot for all the help..yur treat is definetly due..Probbaly will come to chennai before session starts so...then we can hang out...!!!

@ Apurva

Abt the cop ques..i said i ll do (pay bribe or fine) based on the priority of the work i am abt to do...i.e if the work for which i am going is very imp i ll pay bribe to save time,else...fine it is:)

Hi,
i am sorry smartkid , but i guess i am a bit offended by your tone stating that" some alumni could come up and provide experiences" --- which implies that you are doubting the credentials of the posts by the regulars on this thread. Believe me we are trying real hard to give u ppl a taste of what great lakes is and people doubt us... its really ironical..

anyways i will continue to do my job and in case u dont trust us you are free to skip the remaining part of the message.

yes .. the course is not very much structured like in some courses get over very quickly while some may take the normal lag time. but thats the call u would have to take. considering that we have mostly US profs its not possible for them to stay beyond 2-3 weeks. so a course typically gets over in 2-3 weeks. i am told that even in other top Indi B-schhols this happens. being a one year course things obviously will be hastened.

Now smartkid,
i understand u have some really valid concerns and unless u come over here and see how things work, i think there will always be a room of doubt, which i understand is very normal. so i would suggest you to self-introspect..

ask yourself what u want??
consider what all options you have??
with the available options take in whichever suits you best??
Follow the path where your heart really beats!!

i guess it was too bit philosophical, but being a b-schooler i guess i will have to give some global gyaan..

regarding calling the dean as uncle,
i think its a different culture. it doesnot happen in corporate , but you are in a school not a corporate house and besides culture is just a way of life and at great lakes family bonding is a culture and we are proud of it and whats wrong with it. you gotta speak to uncle bala , then u will know why we revere him..

if u feel i have been too harsh, kindly apologize, but believe me the above post really provoked me.

thanks and regards,
Prashanth

Hi All

Now even I think,as Prasanth Pointed out, all of us new admits shud post our profiles on this thread only rather than having diff thread as one started by me; as it wud only create confusion in minds of people who are still in process of applying....

All those from Bangalore or Delhi...Please come fwd...

I for one am working in Bangalore and native Delhi...so please count me from both loc's and let me know if people in bang are planning to meet sometime before landing in chennai...

All the Best...and Keep Rocking

Cheers :)
Manik

Thanks prashant, there is not an element of doubt about what you say. i was expecting few more ppl to have a say in this, as this is a subjective matter and opinions differ...i was just increasing the sample space for getting more inputs 😃

Hi smart kid

I am a great laker and proud to be associated with this institution and uncle Bala.I have more than enough experience in the corporate world to understand the intricacies of the system. For an outsider it may be diifcult to digest the fact that the whole instituiton is considered to be an extended family.Trust and faith is the basis of any great effort.Trust in your team and faith in your ability to deliver the best and derive the best from your team mates.
Uncle Bala and Greatlakes inclulcates the sense of humbleness and togetherness in each and every member of the team. We are treated as a family and we respect his love and vision. At great lakes we learn not only the tools to win the corporate warfare but also the values of ethics and morality. We are equipped to take on any top class management professional on his chosen field.
We great lakers are proud of the fact that we joined this institution inspite of offers from other Bschools. In fact I never had an occasion to regret my decision. As a team and as a management school we are seccond to none.We the junior pioneers started from where the pioneers stopped and went on to propell the brand of great lakes to greater heights.

Great lakes is built on the edifice of trust and customer centricity. We are all part of a family where each one of us cares for each other. You will understand this concept in the first week of your student life in Great lakes.
Congratulation to all who have converted their admission calls.

HI,
I had been to GLIM one day and met Prashanth. He is such a nice man. He showed me around the building and i am pretty impressed.

1 quick question.
I am planning to apply in the second phase. What is the difference between the first phase and second?
Am i going to be at any disadvantage if i apply in the second phase?

Thanks in advance,
Praveen.V

Hi Spacekey,

There is no difference between the first phase and second phase ... It is for operational convenience ... Generally people who have no plans of writing CAT and other exams appear for the first phase ... Apart from that, there is no difference ...

Vijai

Before I start, kudos to Prashanth, Vijay and others for doing such a great job. Good to know abt GLIM. Have read this thread from post 1 and GLIM really impresses me.
Congrats to all who have made it in the first round. Now, I have a couple of questions.
I am with TCS for 2 yrs(total 2.5 yrs exp as of date). Expecting a CAT score of 38. How was the PI for ppl with similar profile? What sort of work ex. qns were asked and to what depth? Were you ppl drilled too much on it? And how abt. other qns (apart from the ones already mentioned in the thread)? Also let me know your answers and how the panel reacted to it.
My second question (to GLIMmers): I am interested in both IT and HR. Considering that there is no IT specialisation, what sort of positions were offered in IT companies? Also I am a little hesitant as the top professors teach only Marketing & Finance(as per this thread). Does this mean that GLIM is not a good option for IT/HR? Could you guys elaborate the opportunities for these two areas as I feel the thread has exposed only the Mar/Fin part of GLIM? I want to know both the education and placement scenario for IT & HR.
Regards,
Ashok

There is a horizontal called as operations and technology which has a slew of IT topics. We do have certain stud profs in HR and to name a few who come to my mind instantly would be radhika chaddha and pr ofessor bharath.( there are others, but considering that i have not taken HR i am giving u my viewpoint based on the extent of exposure).

IT & HR would be a great option provided u are really interested and going by the current attrition rates i think it shud be a hot job and demanding too.
placements we do have all the IT majors..u name it we have it.. but i will be able to give u placement stats only after jan when our first cycle of placements get over.

I think u will be in good company and we already have a HR guy with 8 years experience who will be joining the 3rd batch(going by the first round results). so the peer group will also be awesome. happy apping.

cheers,
Prashanth

Thanks Prashanth. Still, could you ask anyone in a similar stream to give me further details? Also, what is "horizontals"?

HI Ashok,

Horizontals are the major streams offered. Finance, Marketing, Operations and HR are the four horizontals.

Hey ashok. Prashant cited me your query and am going to take the liberty of answering your query specific to HR. The HR scene is fantastic everywhere with the kind of unprecedented growth that India Inc is experiencing. It has a direct correlation with people in HR. Everyone needs people to recruit people. Ofcourse thats just one function that HR offers.. but thats an example to stress the need for HR professionals. Risking exaggeration i would like to quote a lot of professional speakers who've come down for Guest lectures, saying things like HR pro's are going to be in greatest demand with services dominating the business ideologies.

Ok horizontals are the functions viz. Finance, HR, Operations and Mktng.
Here at Great Lakes you don't get exposed exclusively to Hr. We have something like Strategy, OB and Hr clubbed under a common umbrella.
So if you are looking for specific HR stuff only you might want to consider other options. Otherwise the topics covered under this umbrella here are exciting.
Companies who've already specified their requirements in HR include Ford, HCL,E-serv to name a few. HR consultancies like Ma Foi and Mercer have recruited from Great Lakes in the past and are likely to visit us again. This is a purely personal picture that i can share as far as Hr is concerned.
You are welcome to ask more if you want and i'l try my best to answer. In the current batch there are around 7-8 students who have taken this Horizontal as their Major/Minor. Hope the data helps :)
ciao.

hey, i am a fresher. could u tell me wat should b the minimum %ile 4me 2 get 2 a call frm gr8 lakes!!!!

Topics getting hastened is one thing that a great laker might wonder himself, on occassions, here at Great Lakes. I guess its a phenomenon anyone who wants to do a 1 yr MBA needs to accept !!! Its really difficult and incorrect to compare with the industry standards as this model is in a different league. This fact needs to be taken seriously by anyone considering a 1 yr course. After all, people with experience aren't given a heavy priority for the sake of it. So expect the unexpected and enjoy the churning. Trust us its mighty fun and loads of learning.

What %ile are you talking about? Kindly go through the earlier pages for a better understanding about the institute. You could also visit our website for more details.
