Life@Great Lakes

4:30 AM : The sound of my room mates alarm wakes me up, only to push the alarm button off. The signal though is that the day has started. I try opening my eyes but then fall back to sleep for a few more minutes. Suddenly I find the clock ticking over to 6:15 AM, and yes considering the exams I have in coming days, I decide to wake up. By the time I could get spectacles over my eyes, I have already crushed a few books which take more space of the bed then what i do. Somehow i am able to find the right book, and hence sit down to study for few hours before i realize i got to get ready for classes, and hence starts the dressing up process.

9:00 AM : Running all the way to campus I manage to enter the class just before the professor, and its only during this hour i realize how much "JustInTime - funda" holds good. Seeing the enthusiastic faces, the first thought that crops in my mind is "Why cant i be energetic". Probably Philosophy is what makes them so enthusiastic and then starts a session full of fun loving arguments, from atman to souls, from buffalo's to sleeping tigers...We meet every soul and by the end of lecture, i am unable to find my own!

11:00 AM : After the first class, if I my bad karma's follow me, i land up in another class - Statistics. Now this class can surely wake "kumbhkaran" also. Prof PKV as we loving call him is one of the most energetic prof i have ever met. He runs in the class, he cracks fundo jokes, and his knack of getting in amazing expressions on his face makes us feel alive. His bend over style of saying "Exxxcuse meee" has become a rage in Great Lakes.

2:00 PM : After a heavy luncheon, we guys move to the nearby tea stall. One thing is for sure, the owner of tea stall is not only making lots of money but has somehow become an internal part of our lives. While using a few "Hi - tech and censored words" we have SP (Special Tea) with bla bla. All this while our eternal mates, Dogs around Great LAkes, keeps trying to come closer to have some biscuits. In the class room, we are back to the same process of intense discussions and learnings.

5:00 PM : Time for some break..with sessions over, but then as some one said there are some things which never end. If we are having a bad day, we might have a guest lecture. But post Guest Lecture I am sure most realize that it was our good luck and not bad, that we have landed in the environment wherein much of learning is done through industry interactions. Any ways if we don't have class our prof's make sure that we have enough of work to do. Some more learnings and then its time for GYM!

7:30 PM : Few of us get to Gym and work out and then move for dinner. Post dinner, we run against time listening to some of the very famous songs sung by fellow MBA's , expressing their feelings about how things are while the Course. In between all this you will find lots of people making network, with chirkut aka orkut being highly famous here amongst Great Lakers.

11:00 PM and then 1:00 AM...time is still running and we have assignments to complete, you see more serious faces in Great Lakes at this our then in morning. With Deadlines closing, we keep striving, believing that: "We have miles to go before we sleep" . And by the time we land up on the bed it is, dont know what time because most of the times, we only know what time we wake, sleeping is no more in our hands:) Next morning its another day, but the same schedule just that the subjects change, but then whether its FA or Chinese Great Lakers are grilled to the core.

Hi Folks!!!

The following are the general guidelines for ADMISSIONS to Great Lakes (2007-0 :

  1. Only GMAT and CAT scores will be accepted. CAT scores of 2005 and 2006 will be accepted - ofcourse GMAT scores should be within the validity period!!!
  2. The scores of GMAT or CAT will be a criterion for elimination. There is no cut-off in GMAT / CAT scores, however short listing candidates will be on the basis of relative performance (based on the population).
  3. Two years of work experience would be highly desirable for any prospective student.
  4. The application forms will be available "tentatively" from September 1, 2006.
Detailed Time line will be posted for your reference and action, very soon.

Day at Great Lakes

......From A Student , PGPM 2007 - also there on http://greatlaker.blogspot.com/ (official blog for Great LAkes, Chennai)

Beginning of the Day
(as on May 22, 2006)

6:25 a.m. My alarm clock starts beeping and I reluctantly roll out of my bed. The sun is shining bright (read extremely hot) and it appears to be a nice early-spring day. Our XYZ subject (wouldnt call it a specific subject as all subjects are equally interesting and gruelling) case for today required some significant pre class room reading and assumptions, and after my shower I hope to quickly compare my assignment with my study group's write-up, which was sent out to our group late last night.

Study Group

7:30 a.m. I quickly grab some breakfast at the College Cafe as I head to study group. Since today is a three-class day, we usually all get to study group by around 7:40, and after five minutes of socializing and waking up, start our discussion at 7:45.

This morning, we spend about fifteen minutes on each case, just throwing out ideas and questions associated with the protagonist or the decision that has to be made. At this point in the year, we've still not figured out fully how to read cases and what exactly we should be prepared for in case of a cold call, but it's always nice to share thoughts and ideas as one of us has always thought of something none of the rest of us have.

The Section Experience

8:40 a.m. Statistics is my first class of the day in Section S1. One of the greatest things about Section S1 is that, since we stay in the same room with the same fifty four students for half a year, we get to all know each other very, very well. Many bonds and friendships form and the section becomes a strong community, always trying to help each other out whether it's during a cold call, holding a review before a final exam, or supporting each other outside of the classroom. Later tonight, my class (read people from all sections) is going to a local bar.
11:40 a.m. My second class just finished, and we have thirty minutes until our next class starts. A bunch of my section mates and I go grab lunch in the Coll Caf (sign again!) and head outside to enjoy the nice weather (yuck its so hot and humid). As we sip on Chai at the local tea shop, we discuss placement plans, among other things.

Speaking in Class

2:00 p.m. As class starts, the professor calls my name for a split second; I had visions of a cold call! This class is Transformational Leadership and this is the first semester it's being taught here at Great Lakes. Today's class is a very interesting ethical dilemma in which an executive of a juice company has a series of decisions to make that do not appear to have an obvious right or wrong answer.

The Day Really Begins
Doing Cases

4:00 p.m. Class ended at 3:30 and I've spent the last half-hour grabbing a quick snack and relaxing. Now, it's time to start my cases for tomorrow (which is a two-case day!). I spend, on average, about an hour preparing each case, although some are shorter or longer than others. The amount of time I spend on a case usually correlates to the previous knowledge I have about the industry (I'll spend less time on a case for which I already know about the industry) and the amount of number crunching needed to fully prepare a case (I'll spend more time on cases that require heavy number crunching).

Shad

5:00 p.m. Whew! Cases are finished for tomorrow. Now its time for some TP session ;-)

Evenings at Great Lakes

7:00 p.m. I am about to head back to my room, when suddenly we hear about an assignment which has to be completed by 9am tomorrow. Darn there goes the plan for the evening.
8:00 p.m. After the new case study finishes, we all head over to Ascendas (the new found abode) to eat dinner. We run into some more classmates who join us, and our dinner conversation quickly changes from classes to everyone's last holiday plans L .
After dinner, I head back to my dorm room to check e-mail, leave some messages, and spend some time relaxing and watching TV.

Post Dinner at Great Lakes

10:00 p.m.
there is still more work to be done before we hit the sack.lots of assignments to be done before the month end ..

01:00 a.m. After the canning our assignments into the required format, I head back to my room.am (we) are so tired I have no trouble falling asleep.

After having amzing faculties for first semester, the bar was raised and to say that Great Lakes was able to surprass that bar would be an understatement. We are already in the mid of Term 2 and there have been a few new faces coming and teaching us. And i feel lucky to be taught by such an amazing grp of faculties.

We started the new semester with Strategic Management. The subject was taught by Prof Rasheed from University of Texas. Amazing sense of humor and a knack of keeping people awake, made him one of the most liked ones in Great Lakes. He is a firepower of knoweldge from varied fields and his jokes really made a subject like strategic management very very interesting. For more info on him pls check his homepage http://management.uta.edu/bulletin/rasheed.htm or http://management.uta.edu/Dr.Rasheed/Home.htm

Next in line Prof Raj from XLRI Jamshedpur. He was here to teach Organisational Behavior and impressed every sould in Great Lakes with his understanding of human behavior. He gave a few inventories and then analysed scores of most students and most of the people here were shocked to find out the truth in his findings. He is still left with a few courses and we are eagerly waiting for his return. for more on him check http://www.xlri.ac.in/scripts/faculty_profiles.php

For Micro Economics we have Prof Radhakrishnan, from Madras Institute of Development Studies. He carries along with him stacks full of achievements, experience and knowledge. Distinctive feature of Prof RadhaKrishnan was his ability to ask puzzles before and after finishing his lectures. And these puzzles really make you think for exMetro in Coma Bombay Dying:) But its not just about asking puzzles thats a complementary thing with his ability to transfer knowledge. For more information on him http://www.mids.ac.in/prk.htm

And few days from now we start Accounting and the course will be taught by our Honrary Dean Dr Bala V Balachandran. Now do i need to write anything about him, his achievements are widely known and acknowledged in academia and industry circuits. And thats one of the reason i am writing about him before his course, because I have so much faith and trust on his ability to teach that i dont even feel like waiting for the course to begin. For more on him http://www20.kellogg.northwestern.edu/facdir/facpage.asp?sid=474 or http://www.glakes.org/founders-message.htm

Thats it as of now - will continue writing about the faculty@great lakes

Guys - here is an oppurtunity to Meet Prof Bala V Balachandran - Hon Dean of Great Lakes.

We are having "Meet the Dean" session at Chennai on 07th Jul 06

Alumi Inc.@Great Lakes

8th July'06 would be taken down as a memorable day for Great Lakes Community. It was on this day that we had formal inaugration of Alumni Inc. at Great Lakes Institute of Management Chennai. Uncle Bala along with T.T Durai were present there to grace the function with their blessings.

The Inaugral Function was held at MayaJaal, on East Course Road. Great Lakers including people from management, Staff and Student Community from present and past batches were all present on the day. Besides loads of knoweldge transfer for the Crusaders, various fun filled activities like face painting, tatoos etc etc were also present. And with a rocking DJ, most of the Great Lakers were found dancing away to glory.

Considering the importance that Alumni Network plays in the sucess of a B School, I am sure the formation of Alumni Inc. is going to take Great Lakes one step closer to its goal of being the Best B School in India.

hi,

There is a nice article in india today july 17th edition and u can check it out right now

B-SCHOOLS: COLLABORATIVE BUSINESS EDUCATION Creating The New Indian Manager
As Indian companies increasingly embrace globalisation, the crunch for skilled talent will be one of the biggest challenges. The answer lies in a collaborative model for business education.GUEST COLUMN: VIJAY NALLAN CHAKRAVARTHI Globalisation is the new mantra for Indian companies. More and more of them are using it as a key strategy to achieve competitive advantage. A recent study conducted by The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) identified 100 companies from rapidly developing economies (RDE 100) that are becoming global challengers, i.e., companies that are at the leading edge of globalising their businesses. Twenty-one of the 100 companies from this list are from India! These 21 companies have combined revenues of approximately $93 billion (Rs 418,500 crore) and grew at an average rate of 24 per cent per annum between 2000 and 2004. While well-known blue chip companies like Reliance, Tata, Infosys and Wipro feature in this list, I am sure there are many more companies which are stellar performers and have globalisation on their agenda, but were not on the BCG list. These companies are pursuing globalisation not only through organic growth but, increasingly, through acquisitions.
How does this new trend impact management education in India? Significantly, would be my short answer. First, this will result in a remarkable increase in the need for management talent. To put things in perspective, the combined revenue of just the 21 global challengers represents roughly 13 per cent of the $719 billion Indian GDP and is growing three times faster. Given this, a crunch for skilled talent will be one of the biggest challenges before the country. The problem will not be in the availability of it or technical talent but in the availability of good managers who understand the needs of the global economy and execute accordingly.
Quality of management talent available will also be an issue. Indian companies will need managers with skill sets considerably different from those of the past. We will need a new kind of managers who can think strategically and operate effectively in a global marketplace in order to sustain this tremendous growth.
This unprecedented need for a new kind of management talent can only be met with an equally innovative approach. The collaborative model for management education initiated by the Indian School of Business (ISB) is a welcome step in this direction. The school was a pioneer in partnering with the top business schools of the world-Kellogg, The London Business School and Wharton-to build an institution focused on developing a new breed of managers. Another similar institution, The Great Lakes Institute of Management, was recently set up in Chennai, collaborating with the Yale School of Management with a similar goal.
Yet, much more needs to be done in this area. Only a few business schools exist in India which can produce the kind of talent needed in a globalising economy. Almost every sizeable city in India needs a quality business school. While the IIMs have done yeoman work in developing top-notch business graduates, they do not come even close to satisfying the industry's needs. The tremendous need for management talent requires significant investment in infrastructure.
This mammoth task cannot be accomplished without investment from private sources. The collaborative model for business education helps fund this need by channeling resources from businesses which have a vested interest in developing this talent. Further, it also provides us an avenue to tap into the vast resources of NRIs who are interested in the nation's welfare. ISB has proved the viability of this approach through its impressive list of sponsors which include MNCs like Citigroup and Goldman Sachs and high net-worth individuals like Lakshmi Mittal and Vinod Khosla. Another advantageous aspect of the collaborative model is the calibre of management talent that it produces. By associating with the top business schools of the world like Kellogg and Wharton, isb provides instant brand equity. Employers are therefore assured of a minimum guarantee on the quality of talent churned out of these schools.

Further, the collaborative model is well suited for producing the new breed of managers who share a global perspective. Both ISB and Great Lakes draw their faculty from a virtual pool of professors from top institutions around the globe. These professors bring with them real-life experiences with businesses located from Chicago to Shanghai. This ensures that students are familiar with the realities of a global marketplace, rather than just the Indian market. I have witnessed the difference this makes in the students' understanding of globalisation during my interaction with students at Great Lakes in Chennai. Also, the collaborative model helps establish research centres with global teams studying management topics. This helps the schools stay at the cutting edge of research around the globe.
Perhaps the most attractive aspect of the collaborative model is its ability to be replicated. With India's healthy economic growth and emergence of a sizeable middle-class many top business schools around the world and MNCs are increasingly interested in gaining a foothold in the country.
With the right mix of entrepreneurship from dynamic citizens, support from industry and the government, I don't see why every large Indian city can't build its own business school by partnering with global institutions. The collaborative model for business education might well be the answer to solving India's burgeoning management talent quandary.
The author works at The Boston Consulting Group in Chicago and has worked for General Electric Corp. He is a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, and frequently presents guest lectures at the Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai.
And guess what he is coming for guest lecture on 15.07.2006.
