What is the min Work Ex required for admissions in GLIM???

Thanks for ur time,
JOHNNY

Hi Johnny,

Work experience of about 2 years or more is highly desirable for admission in Great Lakes. Also other factors like application essays,CAT/GMAT score & GD/PI performance are given proper weightage for admission.
Please post your further queries in Great Lakes Admissions 2008 thread.

Hi all,

Uncle Bala is featured in today's edition in Econimic Times. Please find the excerpts :

'Get over that mindset of networking with an agenda'

HE IS a Padma Shri awardee who sits on board of companies like Godrej and Crisil and is a consultant to a long list of companies like TCS, SAP. Bala V Balachandran, distinguished professor at the Kellogg School of Management,
Chicago is also a dean at the Chennai-based Great Lakes Institute of Management. He shuttles between the US and India juggling both jobs, spending three months every year in India. Great Lakes, alongside ISB is the second private B-school that has been set up with a very strong linkage with top global B-schools. Mr Balachandran talks about the state of Bschools in India, the challenges that lie ahead for professional education in India and the Great Lakes Institute.

What do you think are some of the big challenges for Business Schools in
India?
It will be better if I keep the comparison between the top 10 B-Schools in India and the United States. Here I think that as far as the IIMs are concerned, the professors are supposed to give 65-70% of their consulting fee to their college. In the US if I do consulting I keep the entire money. So where is the incentive here to do real research? In the US faculty spend up to 50% of their time in empirical research and that I see lacking in India.

How do IIMs compare with the best in the world?
IIMs, especially IIM Ahmedabad, are dream schools. Students at Indian Institutes of Management are diamonds - in fact polished diamonds. I got to be an idiot to make them rotten. But I think IIMs need to increase research work and do less of classroom teaching.
Funding is a big issue. We get a lot of our funding in the
US from philanthropic-minded American companies. It is beginning to happen in India too. This kind of realisation began barely three years ago. Adequate funding is a very important aspect for B-schools to maintain their quality.

Going forward, how do you see professional education evolve in
India?
Professional education has to shift from being generic to being more customised. For example, if I take TCS, Cognizant executives, what they need is more customised solutions in their executive leadership programme. We have to find ways to convert entrepreneurs into innovators. We need to find ways to bring academics closer to reality.

How would you compare Indian students with their global counterparts?
Indian students are very good - they score 120% in left brain-related work. But barely use 20% of their right brain. Indian students have a very analytical mind. But they need to pick up on softer skills, relationship building, and so on.

From your experience, tell us how important you think networking is in today's world?
It is of the utmost value, very important. Since I was 28-30, I actively began cultivating relationships. But I believe in nishkama karma - don't meet people with an agenda or expecting returns. Just do your job, results will automatically come. It is important to get over that mindset of networking with an agenda. And you will realise that you have an amazing network of people who endorse you, who you can reach out. Every month, I set a target for myself to meet so many people.

What's your take on the growing number of returning Indians?
A lot of Indians like me left India due to the controlled nature of the economy at that point of time and everybody called it India's brain drain. Now things have changed - many Indians educated and working in America are returning to India because India has changed. India is the new land of opportunities. There is brain drain from the US now. In fact, returning Indians find that even though the salary here may not yet equal the salaries in the US, but in purchasing power parity (PPP) terms Indian salary actually beats the living standard that one could afford in the US.

It's been three years now since Great Lakes was set up. How has been the experience so far?
We have had 100% placement. We are so happy - placements got completed in 2.5 days with an average salary of Rs 9.3 lakh. Our USP has worked - we are a school of global excellence in quality of education at Indian price.

Some would say that 100% placement is no big deal in a booming economy like India. What would you say is the USP of the school that sets it apart?
Besides being cheaper we have visiting faculty - the best of them - coming from Harvard, Kelloggs, INSEAD, Wharton teaching the course. Sixty-five to 70% of the faculty is visiting.
To all this I would want to add that all the students have to do an empirical study - joint publication with a faculty member. This helps our students work and collaborate closely with the faculty member even though they are visiting.
I also believe in experiential learning - since our one-year programme does not have summer internship, for a month between November and December we ask our students to undertake real projects, it is mandatory. We are also making sure all our students understand and learn Chinese language. Above all here there is an emphasis on individual social responsibilities - our students have to work with under-privileged children and NGOs during their course.

Is there anything different that a B-school in an economy like India should be doing?
We are offering lot of electives keeping in mind the needs of SME sector and entrepreneurs. For example, we offer a course elective on entrepreneurial marketing.

You mentioned about a large number of high-profile visiting faculty? Isn't getting such faculty a problem?
We already have seven full-time faculty members. We expect that to go up to 20 in two years time. I have worked for 25 years in the United States and am well networked with Indian faculty there. I see many of them are looking at opportunities to teach here and come back. Even as I talk, the chairman of finance in NorthEasternUniversity is leaving to join us. Today our (ISB, GreatLake) salaries are at par with those in the west.

Is there any issue around Great Lakes not getting AICTE clearance and hence being asked to shut down?
To make matters clear, we had applied for the AICTE approval in March 2006 itself and so far we have not got any reply. Possibly, the one-year, fast-track programme is not in their scheme of things at the time of our application. We are pursuing the same with them and hopefully arrive at an amicable solution soon.

In the latest issue of BUSINESS TODAY which is on TOP B schools of the country, there are 2 smashing:grab: article on GREAT LAKES . One is ISB CHALLENGER! while the other is A PREMIUM ON EXPERIENCE. For details interested junta may buy the edition.

However following is one article .............

The ISB Challenger By Shalini S. Dagar and Nitya Varadarajan

It doesn't yet have a fancy campus or the heft of the Indian School of Business, but the Bala V. Balachandran-founded Great Lakes Institute of Management wants to be India's best B-school for one-year MBAs.
Back in the early 60s, soon after Bala V. Balachandran had completed his post-graduate degree in mathematics and statistics from Annamalai University in Chennai, one of the things he did was to teach at the newly set up Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad. "Monkeys would jump on the asbestos roofs and it was difficult to teach with all the noise, but IIM-A, with its outstanding faculty and its association with Harvard, has carved a position for itself that no one can challenge," says Balachandran, now the J.L. Kellogg Distinguished Professor of Accounting, Information and Management at the Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management.
More than four decades later, it is dj vu for Balachandran. Three years ago, he set up the Great Lakes Institute of Management in Chennai with the idea of offering world-class management education in India at relatively low costs. Understandably, the infrastructure that he has been able to put together for the B-school, which offers a one-year MBA and shorter executive programmes, is rather modest. The school currently operates out of a two-storey building (excluding cafeteria) in Chennai's Saidapet area, and has a permanent faculty of just four. Just the same, Balachandran has a strong sense of destiny. "Infrastructure is necessary but not sufficient to build a world class academic institute," he says. A full-fledged residential campus is coming up on the famous East Coast Road and would be ready in 2008. At present, students stay around the college, with outgoing students vacating their apartments for the new ones.
With IIM-A as a benchmark (although for all practical purposes, it is pitted against the eight-year-old Indian School of Business in Hyderabad, which also offers a one-year MBA programme), Balachandran is focussed on putting together a committed faculty, which he says is what is key to the success of any institution. Currently, at least 64 faculty members, largely from overseas, visit Great Lakes during the year and stay anywhere between 10 days and six weeks. And the line-up is stellar, ranging from S.P. Kothari, Deputy Dean, MIT, to Shyam Sundar, Chairman, Yale. In another takeaway from the IIMs, the institute plans to limit its students to 260 and have a teacher-student ratio of 1:3. "However, 50 per cent of the faculty would still be visiting professors because we need to know of the changes that keep happening around us," says Balachandran.
And students such as Srivas Ramgopal, 27, a B. Tech graduate, seem to agree. "I decided to go for GLIM because it is unmatched in the country for its visiting faculty," he says. The institute is also roping in corporate India to provide financial support. A few companies are setting up chairs for specific areas. And Balachandran expects Great Lakes to be completely debt-free in another five years, as cash flows build up.

Differentiators
In a high-growth economy, Great Lakes intends to differentiate itself as a marketing-oriented business school-partly due to Balachandran's own background and partly due to the requirements of the Indian economy. "What is the most important thing that India needs? Not talent, not knowledge, not funds, not technology but soft skills and marketing," says the 70-year-old professor. Since marketing is different for different businesses, the marketing specialisation is split between verticals like manufacturing, financial services, technology, family businesses, and health care.
Moreover, the institute runs a non-credit but required course through the year on doing business in China and learning the Chinese ways. "This is the only business school that understands that the future of the world is between India and China," says Balachandran. In addition, all students are required to do a social work-related project under the Karma Yoga programme, which is graded by a not-for-profit organisation.
Placements
Placement has not been a problem so far-the institute thought it would take five days this January, but managed to wrap up everything in two-and-a-half days. And the footprint of employers (which was Tamil Nadu-centric to begin with) is becoming pan-India as much as the student profile, with more than 70 per cent students coming from outside the state.
However, the problem is that Balachandran is seen to be the lone driver for the Great Lakes Institute. It is a contention that he counters passionately. He says he's got a succession plan that includes three part-time honorary deans along with a hand-picked faculty of over 20 members that will run the institute five years from now. "The intention is not to have some warm bodies. I am going to have some passionate academic scholars who are also potential institution builders," says Balachandran

Now i need to admit that i in specific and we as Greatlakers in general have not been doin our duty of making u puys aware of what is Life at Great Lakes is like on a frequent basis. :grab:
It might give an impression that nt a lot is happng but infact too much is happng for an avg guy like me to handle and hence these long gaps in my posts . However lets me try to make up for that by telling u abt the latest developments in GL.??:
Now i knw a lot of u cal Great Lakes as GLIM but as a Greatlaker this acronym is not all that nice to hear and that's why we have been trying to put a concentrated effrt of calling Great Lakes as GL. After all things here are not GLIM bt extremely BRIGHT .However coming back to point let me tell you whats up in GL these days. Basically 3 things
1) Guest Lectures
2) Company visits for Internship
3) Exams at the end of term
Not necessarly in above order

Now Guset Lecture and exams at GL is a year long feature and trst me nothing can stop from these things to happen .........However jst to give u ppl an idea since last week we had the guest lectures by Dr Anji Reddy( Founder of Reddy Labs), CKO of Cognizant and even a lecture by Col on how millatary training can help with Management. And 2 heavy duty papers of 3rd sem. One more exam is lined up 2mmrw bt then a man got to do what he got 2 do and thats the reasn i am writing this post.

About internship well our internship starts from next month and there is a beeline of companies at college for picking students for projects.TCS came day before yesterday and Citigrop and Deutche bank is lined up for next week. Also there are many comapnies who has been sending there requirements to the college on a day 2 day basis. Students however are lookin for only their kind of project.
Now ONLY THERE KIND is very crucial as in a college like GL with on an average 3.3 years work ex and ppl coming from best companies and middle level ranks. An ideal project would be something which gives them peek into a new industry and also an oppertunity to implement their learnings here. And thats why poeple are unbelivebly choosy here. Talk about spoiling ppl with a lot of choices but being a Greatlaker choices are indeed in abundance

Well i knw this post is getting too long here to cntue it further bt i shall keep u ppl updated and wld cntue to share the latest frm the campus of GL
Regards

So INDIA WON!!!!!!!..................n trst my guys what we didnt do to ensure that we Great Lakers can watch that historic match.

We got a guest lecture postponed :wow:and rescheduled our Chinese class!!! Now trst me that's a big deal in Great Lakes as admin is very particular abt schedules.

We might just get royally screwed and overloaded in days to come but what the heck........workload is the norm of life here and anyways India dont win worldcup everday!!!

btw guys v are goin to celebrate India's victory(again i.e ) by cutting a cake in our canteen!!!Talk abt some celebration guys...............

Cheers............

So its raining on field and off it too. We guys are loaded with deadlines this weekend and in the words of a famous prof. of our institute are trying to wriggle out of this situation!

Guys emperical studies is now an integeral part of Life at Great Lakes and all the aspirants stay prepared for heavy duty research once they become a Great laker. The part that rubs in pretty badly is that Emperical studies only became mandatory this year which means none of our seniors had to break their heads in doin Literature review, deciding on methodlogy and things of that nature...

Without wastn any further time as deadline is looming dangerously close i signoff with the promise of keeping u guys posted!

HAPPY WEEKEND FELLAS!!!

Ok me dear puys...........here is the latest from GL campus

Empirical study has been finally nailed and till next deadline Greatlakers can heave a sigh of relief as far as research is concerne.

However if that gives u ppl an impression that thngs for sum time things are going to stay low than u cldnt have been more wrong

Come 5th and we will have our Philosophy Final exam along with the final Chinese /Mandarin exam. All in all two major subjects of first four terms is lined up after 3 days

Hopefully we will survive the heat and would put up a decent show on 5th.......Till then puys chill out n have fun...

Cheers

So 5th has come to an end and so our Philosophy and Manadarin courses with today's exam.....

It was supposed 2 an exciting day but the plethora of assignmts and schedules of other exams have been a spoilt sport!:(

Right from 2mrw till 12 th v have either big assignmts 2 submit or exams............

Add one more sunday to the numerous sundays of no fun, no rest and no eatng out!!!

However i wld like 2 give a special adeiu 2 our philosophy course ( hope i clear the paper!)

Irrespective of hw tgh it was 2 go thrgh all those heavy duty pre readings and handling those mind numbling exams........we can today proudly claim tht v have an idea (if nt very clearly ) what Vedas, Upanshidas and Bhagwat Gita talks abt.....

The jury is still out on hw much v will be able 2 apply this knowledege in our managerial responsibilties bt v r indeed more aware of our ancient civilization and unexpectadly v r glad n proud abt it........Truly speakn this is one of the many unique gifts which Great Lakes has given us and hopefully this awareness abt old scriptures will help us in future one way or other.
As far Chinese is concerned.......it was great fun!

My study grp members are waitin so tht we can conquer another mountain of assignment and i better get movng..........Till next time puys.....cheers and

Have a great weekend!!!

Philosophy grades are out !!!.............yeah we gave that paper yeaterday n today v got our grades......

Trust our Philosophy prof 2 be that efficient.........but the better news is that i got an A grade!

Some buddies of mine have got A+ :wow: n trst me thats a big deal while sum got F too:(!

Most of the junts is glad that they manage 2 clear the paper......Trst me puys philosophy results always bring mixed bag of emotions 2 campus n after philisophy results junta goes out or booze to their heart's content........I am sure that 2mrw's submission wont be able 2 deter such enthusiats even 2day.......

All said and done........Philosophy course is a unique course and personally i am glad that i went through it.....

Cheers

Man these exams at 8 AM in the morning are driving people crazy here. After juggling with assignments, presentations and exams we at GreatLakes seem to have perfected the Just In Time concept. Btw we have a Course coordinator for each subject, some1 from student, who helps the faculty conduct classes, take attendance n all. theunkindmonk happened to be the CoCo for BC. M sure our mam would be utterly disaapointed by Mr. CoCo's late submission. :satisfie: Dude m willing to take some JIT sessions for u, if u wish. :)

With people heading for internship this weekend, the mood is upbeat at GreatLakes. We have people goin to Nokia, DELL, MS, ITC, Reliance etc to name a few. Infact with each passing day, the profile offered to the interns by new companies tend to be getting better. If these are some signs regarding the industry's perception of GreatLakers, man I cant wait for the placement season in Feb.

Cheers,
Bhaski.

Well Mr Nonconformist had the luxury of submiting it JIT for resns which have more 2 do with his grp guys being cooperative and dot on time rather that any special attributes of himself .......

Hwever i humbly admit my falliability n i wld try 2 be JIT in next assignement by taking all material help frm Mr Non conformist's group.......i learn my lessons fast u c!

Cmng bck 2 campus news......Operations paper got over n i got royally screwed:grab:

I am feeling like a complete loser and nw i think instead of choosing electives yesterday( wasted 2 hrs on tht) i cld have studied

Well these r few luxuries in MBA and one of the biggest amngst them is tht when u screw u papers u tell ur pals tht it doesnt matter as gardes wont play such a big role in placement hwever the other side of the story is that u prove urself a pucca moron in your inability to manage decent grades:satisfie:

We have anther submission lined up i couple of hrs and even 2mrw with a paper on 12th........Life goes on along with exams at Great Lakes:robot:!!

Cheers
