we had 6 weeks without brk....

The consulting committee in Great Lakes is doing a tremendous job in helping students understand, appreciate and master the art of consulting. Err.. I am not sure if it is completely an art anymore. They have made it more scientific in nature and that brings objectivity into the picture.

A sneak preview into the consulting committee activities at Great Lakes

Workshop Series#3 ? Identifying the Achilles heel! Great Lakes Institute of Management

"Hey, I know what the answer is!!" said one of the gladiators. This was the first thing that was said after the usual exchange of greetings. We were trying to make full use of the workshops - it was peer learning at its best! The subject of discussion was the question with which the last workshop had ended. "If the profit of our own Bajaj Bistro declines how can we analyze it?" This session was dedicated to case analysis and the processes involved.
As we found, the steps in any case analysis are:
1. Start
2. Analyze and identify the problem at hand
3. Recommend a solution
4. Close the case.
So, to analyze, why the revenue of Bajaj Bistro would decline, we needed to structure the case. As Muru said to the relief of all of us, "There are four frameworks in which most of the common problems fit."
For this problem, the best suited framework was quickly identified by the Gladiators.
Every Gladiator presented the logic in a client friendly manner. The session was like seeing, Future consultants in the making!
Here, we were exposed to the Two Pronged Approach to Tackling Business Situation Cases:
1. Learn how to be the InterviewER (very predictable)
2. Learn how to be the InterviewEE.
It was a great amalgam of team work and competitiveness promoted at the same time with the role play livening up the discussions.
We found that the revenue was not declining but the cost was increasing. The cost of the raw materials had gone up and with two additional recruits, the profit had decreased considerably. (All fictitious data as part of the assignment) The case was solved and closed with a copy of the solution sent to the team at Bistro!
It was once again, fun with learning as the example was something that all of us could relate to!

:

Well Well Well.. Sangamitra 2010 was marvellous..!! After 2 weeks of postponement, thanks to the rain gods..(Talk about the unexpected rain in August..!!!) .. now the show is finally done..!!

The tireless nights of practice finally paid off as all of us gladiators got together to put up a fantastic show..!

Name it and it was there.. be it Dance,Mad Ads, fashion show and what not..

Also, the outstanding performance of the gladiators in previously held sports events was rewarded.. Prof Sriram gave out the awards and Prof Veeravalli addressed the crowd.. Or should i say he 'negotiated' with us to let him leave for home.. :-P

All the dance performances were one of a kind, ranging from Bhangra to the waka-waka..

The Mad Ads competition was won by section 4..! (Brilliant job,guys..!!) although section 1 was not far behind..!!
(i am thoroughly biased here, for apparent reasons :-P )

And then the babes and studs of our college put up a beautiful fashion show in Indian attire..!! :)

This was followed by a mouth-watering meal at the cafeteria
and then.....................................................................................................

Tada...!!! OF COURSE.. the DJ night..!!!

Everyone got onto the dance floor and swayed to the foot-tapping music until the wee hours of the night..!!

All in All a wonderful day.. with some Profs sparing us with the pre-reads for a change

And then the next morning..... the Alarm rings at 7 am..!! :-(:|

Well, what can i say..!! back to the morning chaos and the assignments and the reports and bla bla bla..

Ok guys gotta go... got a submission tomorrow!!!

Until then..!!
Have a Great time..!!

Cheers,
Pooja

The 5th International Yale - Great Lakes Research Conference begins at Great Lakes, Chennai today. Keynote speakers include
- Dr. Shyam Sunder, Yale University
- Dr. Seenu V Srinivasan, Stanford University
- Dr. Neharika Vohra, IIM-Ahmedabad

Yale-Great Lakes Center aims to promote, facilitate and advance India-centric management related research which contributes to the development of basic and applied knowledge in the field of management. The center will be a bridge that links scholars around the globe with India as a common interest.

The event has over 30 papers being presented in addition to the keynote addresses.

Will keep you updated on the happenings. Stay on!

The conference as Prof. Venkat introduced aims to achieve intellectual pleasure. Research papers presented so far have questioned our assumptions on two major aspects:

1. Policy Research in Management - Dr. Shyam Sundar in this paper explained the history of management from Kautilya's Arthashastra to the story of East India Company to the beginning of Yale University. The talk also enlightened us on the relevance of research in management education.

2. What if Marketers Put Customers Ahead of Profits? - Seenu V. Srinivasan, Stanford University - how organizations should change their focus from profits to customers. Organizations in principle always wanted to put customers first. But over time that has become a myth. This paper has come out with interesting insights through empirical studies on how organizations benefit by putting customers ahead of profits in practice.
