ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS

The continuous global recession followed by austerity measures adopted by corporates has resulted in a decreasing job opportunity and a mismatch between supply of skilled professionals and job demand. This has pushed today's youth to search for some new alternatives. The major alternative available is the growth of entrepreneurs in the recent times. Entrepreneurship is basically to imbibe the conception, converting it into action and management of a productive venture with all associated risks and returns.

An entrepreneur is one who brings resources, labor, materials, and other assets into combinations that add value, they also introduce changes, innovations, in a new order. Entrepreneurship is the dynamic process of creating incremental wealth. The wealth is created by individuals who assume the major risks in terms of equity, time and/or career commitment or provide value for some product or service. The product or service may or may not be new or unique, but value must somehow be infused by the entrepreneur by receiving and locating the necessary skills and resources.

Entrepreneurship is the process of creating something new by devoting the necessary time and effort, assuming the accompanying financial, psychic, and social risks, and receiving the resulting rewards of monetary and personal satisfaction and independence. There is a need to groom entrepreneurs by teaching them the concepts of entrepreneurship when they are young and flexible enough to be moulded.

“Entrepreneurs are made not born”. They are made from their childhood, families and life circumstances. They are made from their obstacles, failures and successes. And most importantly, they are made from their past and present work experiences.

IMS, Adhyatmik Nagar Campus, Ghaziabad in collaboration with NIESBUD organized a 6-day Entrepreneurship Development Programme (EDP). The inauguration of the same was held on 20th March 2013 in the Institute's premise .The program was inaugurated by the Director Dr B.P.Pethiya. In his inaugural speech, he emphasized on the need of exploring ideas, avoiding the fear of risk, learning to think independently, and on developing young minds into future entrepreneurs.

The other speakers gracing the occasion were Prof S.K.Kapoor, Dr S.K.Dube and Ms Pooja Rastogi .The major objective of the programme was to teach the students the various nuances that go into the preparation of the project and the procedure of obtaining loans from banks for the same. It also discussed the various hurdles that they might incur while presenting the project to the banks. Such courses aim to ignite the spark of latent entrepreneurship in the students and make them self-reliant for the future.

Career Mentoring Week

'Career Mentoring Week' is an initiative of the Corporate Connect Cell- NIYOJAN with a aim to assist the students with their transition period into either higher studies or into corporate sector. The experts were called to interact with students by sharing information on various career opportunities in academics and corporates. The sessions were organized for the final year students of BBA 2010-13 Batch 2013 at IMS Adhyatmik Nagar Campus, Affiliated to CCSU, Meerut.

The Guest lecturers covered almost all functional areas. The session kick started with a module on Finance, where Dr. Vidya Sekhri an intellectual in the same field discussed with the students the career opportunities for students who wanted to pursue their further studies in Finance. She discussed that they can have careers in Credit Rating Analysis, Derivatives, Security Analyst, Portfolio management, etc. she stirred the minds of students to think about the vast scope the financial sector has today with major job opportunities in sectors like, banking, insurance, etc.

In an interactive session on growth in marketing, career opportunities were discussed by Dr. Urvashi Makkar, who is a renowned authority on the subject. Except for many papers to her credit she has also chaired a Technical Session at Harvard University. She throwed light on the new careers in marketing- copywriting, creatives, advertising, digital marketers, product developers rather than the traditional ones like sales. During the sessions a skill testing questionnaire was also given to students so that they could self assess their potential and then select a stream accordingly. Although marketing is one of the most popular specializations students opt in post-graduation she told them that a person not possessing the capabilities could be a misfit and would frustrate in that career over a period of time.

Dr. Anita Singh a senior faculty in the area of Human Resource covered the changing role of HR. How it has changed from a desk job to a strategic one today. The differentiating factor for many firms today is the human capital. In the era of globalization the acquisitions and mergers have increased where human resource issues like cross cultural management, stress management, etc. become important.

The last but not the least a very encouraging session was conducted by Prof. Saurabh Choudhary in the area of Information Technology. The subject is like water which is a universal solvent. Similarly IT can be chosen as a major or minor along with any other area be it finance, marketing, human resource, operations, etc. he also discussed the case-study of IRCTC and how Tata Consultancy Service changed the Indian ticketing scenario. IT is a necessary subject for people who like to pursue a career in digital marketing. In the era of gadgets, inventory control, data mining, ERP, etc Information technology cannot be left to be understood by students today.

After the program the students opined that the career mentoring week has provided them with a valuable learning experience and it motivated them to look for the answers of number of questions like– What they want to do in the next six months? What specialization to take? What skills they possess. The purpose for conducting the sessions was truly well achieved.
