My Experience @ ims ghaziabad

One of the most significant reasons i choose ims ghaziabad was the remarkable diversity the college has to offer. The atmosphere on campus is extremely dynamic. Every class that i have attended was sheer fun. The faculty is extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I rank ims ghaziabad as one of the best colleges in the india due to its high academic standards, first-rate professors and intellectually gifted students.

I believe management is all about making judgments on situations, people. The key here is to get it right and even if a wrong decision is taken at the outset, fast corrective action should be taken to mend the situation. At ims ghaziabad i learnt how to cope with failures in life. I learnt to be vigilant, and to take up struggles that came along in everyday of my campus life. I also learnt how to come out tougher and stronger at the end of it all.

As today's corporate environment moves at such a rapid pace. Change occurs every now and then, the new issues must be resolved asap. The pgdm programme of ims ghaziabad gave me the tools for my toolkit that allow me to understand the challenges and create a solution for them. The most valuable experience that i gained in my time during the course was building relationships with my classmates. These relationships have given me a foundation of friends and colleagues that will boost my career and my personal life for years to come.

If you are looking for a truly great experience and career, then ims ghaziabad is guaranteed not to disappoint you. Thank you ims ghaziabad! For helping me to make my own identity in this corporate world.

Inflation-Indexed Bonds of RBI: A Dilemma to Success

The Reserve Bank recently announced that it will launch inflation-linked bonds every month, starting June 4, to attract household savings of up to Rs 15,000 crores this fiscal so as to discourage investments in gold. RBI said in statement, “RBI, in consultation with Government of India, has decided to launch Inflation Indexed Bonds (IIBs)”. These bonds will have a maturity period of ten years and the total issue size will of IIBs will be Rs 12,000-15,000 crores in 2013-14. The first tranche of the IIBs-2013-14 will be issued on June 4 and after that bonds will be issued on last Tuesday of every month. First series of IIBs will be open for all class of investors but the second series issue (beginning October) will be reserved exclusively for retail investors. Government and RBI are worried over the rising gold imports as it is putting pressure on Current Account Deficit (CAD), which widened to historic high of 6.7 per cent in third quarter of 2012-13.The announcement of IIBs has prime objective to discourage investments in gold as it is being considered as the second major move by RBI after placing restrictions on banks to import gold.

Giving details of first series of IIBs, RBI announced:

1. Coupon rate (interest rate) will remain fixed on these bonds but the principal amount invested in the bonds will be linked to inflation based on Wholesale Price Index (WPI).

2. These bonds provide inflation protection to bond holders as at maturity, the adjusted principal or the face value, whichever is higher, will be paid.

This class of bonds is making a comeback in the Indian financial markets after almost a decade. They have not been very fashionable as investment products in the past due to pricing issues and lack of investor education. Inflation-linked bonds may have a challenge to attract the retail investors away from attractive asset class like gold and real estate, as the principal and coupon to be received on these bonds would be linked to wholesale price inflation and not the retail price-led inflation indices. The WPI inflation for April came at 4.89%, the lowest in 41 months but the consumer price inflation, on the other hand, is still above 9%. Some more features of IIBs which may not suit to retail investors are:

1. Investors who place the highest bids would get to subscribe to these bonds and most retail investors are unaware of the process of investment.

2. Retail investors are supposed to have SGL (Subsidiary General Ledger)accounts with primary dealers or banks to place their bids on the negotiated dealing system-order matching system, an electronic platform where bids for trading in bonds are placed.

Some leading bankers also admit that there is a need for people to have the ability to hedge their inflation risk, so it's a step in the right direction but, historically, there has been a disparity between the wholesale price inflation and consumer price inflation and what matters to the common man is the retail inflation. To that extent, it does not completely mitigate the inflation.

Research Seminar on Industry Internships : How & Why?

IMS Adhyatmik Nagar campus Ghaziabad, recently organized a Research Seminar on Industry Internship for the students of management. The major focus of the seminar was on highlighting the research aspects of the program.

Research or industry internship forms an integral part of the management curriculum. It creates a link between class-room teaching and practical exposure for students. Internship is not just important from the point of view of the curriculum but also boosts up the confidence of the student, enhances their personality and makes them ready for the corporate world. It is an important conduit between the student's in class learning and real world challenges.

The major purpose of this seminar was to instill into students an orientation towards research and also to appraise them about the various steps undertaken for the same. The resource people involved in the programme were the Marketing faculties of the institute Ms Pooja Rastogi and Ms Ruchika Jeswal.

A successful internship can result in a pre-placement offer even before the student leaves the campus. The seminar concluded on the note that though academic inputs are the most important aspects but internships goes a long way in giving it a practical sheen.

IMS Ghaziabad is ranked in A1 category of B-Schools by AIMA as per the B School Survey published in Indian Management Journal 2013.

Is Radio Back as Medium for Brand Promotion?

Radio, the old, useful, convenient and effective mode of communication has been there in Indian Market for more than 50 years. In this long era of ups and down, it has seen so many changes. It started as a revolution in the country with the biggest ease and convenience of uninterrupted broadcast even in case of no electricity. It has seen so many ups and downs in terms of market share, the changing preference of listeners and even the change in target listeners group. There was a time when the target listeners were the families who used to listen to the radio as a resource to update them of what is happening in country but the biggest use was the ever pleasant pleasure of relaxing and enjoying life with songs. But with the introduction of FM in India, Radio has reached its pinnacle. Practically, it is FM that has brought audience back to their radio sets. The growth in this industry is definitely the result of amalgamation of Advancement in Technology (including advancements in telecom sector), increased urbanization and higher standard of living. India has seen the signs of an increasing number of people getting back to their favourite radio shows once again.

Brands today realize the need for a 360-degree presence across mediums so that they can be where their consumers are and directly interact and engage with them. Marketers, since beginning, have seen radio as a good source for the promotion of their brands. This medium has always been a cost effective source for the promotion. One of the biggest advantages that radio has is while television gives great reach for the marketers for the promotion, awareness and visibility of the brand; it is only radio that provides the opportunity to interact with listeners. So, as a result, Marketers have quickly spotted the opportunity of value-for-money brand promotion on radio, they have identified this evergreen medium to reach their biggest and largest customer base i.e. the youngsters. Telecom revolution has actually helped this industry to reach the zenith. The youngsters have started seeing FM radio as one of the primary features in their mobile handset has alerted Marketers not to ignore this medium.

Radio has given so many advantages to marketers to advertise their brands. The Radio is cost effective, Interactive, 24X7 access; it has evolved substantially both in terms of engagement as well as reach to more and more cities. It also works as a support medium to television and print for advertisers. Since its prime time differs from the prime time of TV, Marketers have found new time slots to attract the consumers. Marketers are further more interested in this medium as radio allows advertisers to reach out to a specific target group without having to purchase media space on a national scale. They can buy the frequency and selectivity – in terms of audience, day-part, place of listening, and the station itself – and that too at a cost no other medium can match. Another great advantage of radio is that the marketers can create customized messages for brand building at the local level. In a country as diverse as India, this is the blessing for any marketer. India's FM radio broadcasting band lies between 88 and 108 MHz. International practice designates this radio spectrum as suitable for FM broadcasting. Out of this, 100 to 108 MHz is informally reserved for All India Radio and 88 to 90 MHz for community radio. The only part of the band available to private operators is 91 to 99 MHz. That explains the small number of frequencies being offered in each town and indicates assured appreciation in value. Couple this with the flexibility of capital and operating expenses involved, Marketers can develop a business plan to suit their business and strategic needs. India's private FM Radio segment is expected to generate revenue of around INR 14 billion in 2012–13, with 245 private FM stations operating in 86 cities, and has been growing at a CAGR of 14% annually. For instance the FM channels in Delhi are AIR FM Rainbow / FM-1 (107.1 MHz), AIR FM Gold /FM-2 (Early Morning till Midnight) (106.4 MHz), AIR Rajdhani/Gyanvani Channel (Non-Regular broadcast) (105.6 MHz), Oye FM (104.8 MHz), Fever 104 (104 MHz), Radio Mirchi FM (98.3 MHz), Hit FM (95 MHz), Radio One FM (94.3 MHz), Red FM (93.5 MHz), Big FM (92.7 MHz), Radio City (91.1 MHz), Furthermore, the sector is expected to grow to INR 23 billion, at a CAGR of 18%, within three years of Phase III being rolled out, according to “Poised for Growth: FM radio in India” latest study by CII and Ernst & Young. The sector accounts for around 4% of the country's total Ad industry. Globally, radio's average share of the total Ad industry is between 5% – 10%. (Source: Economic Times: December 20, 2012).

Since most of the radio advertisements are short and the number of advertisements aired between programs is less, there is less differentiation between the FM channels; the listeners do not usually switch to another channel only for advertisements. Marketers feel happy to convey the message in this favourable condition. As per the new regulations, a single player can operate in a city with multiple channels in the same city. There might be different channels dedicated to certain genre of programs which will attract a particular group of listeners. This will help the companies to plan their brand promotion campaigns in a much better manner with messages targeting this particular type of audience. For instance, Radio City Connect executed a promotion plan campaign in 12 cities for Renault Pulse and a 72-location activation plan that involved RWA, corporate park and mall activation. This campaign had generated more than 6,000 leads for the brand but more importantly; nearly 1,000 people went for a test drive of the vehicle. This clearly shows that now Radio has become an imperative source for the advertising. It helps in ATL and BTL activities of the company. You will find almost every brand from all industries (FMCG, Telecom, BFSI, Cement, Automobiles, Retail, and many more) have been part of brand activations. According to industry estimates, advertising on radio contributes nearly 15 per cent of the total sales and experts are estimating this figure to go by 20 % in future. In a nutshell, Radio has proved that if companies are looking for the 360 degree promotion of their brand, it can really be one of the better medium to use.

Made in America

In variably in every batch of PGDM, I suggest one of many books which is a must read for every management student.

That B: Made in America by Sam Walton.

From a single mom and Pop store, Walton built the world's largest retail chain of more than 20,000 stores and today it is the world's largest corporation touching $ 500 billion. The tagline of Wal – Mart store was “Everyday Low Prices!”

In this book Walton shares his secret of success; he says one must know where he or she wants to go, what their aim in life is, and to stay focused.

Walton did two most important things which could be replicated in other industries also .One was to bring in innovation in the way the goods were procured at the lowest possible cost. Second, he was a genius when it came to bring in cost efficiency in the distribution chain.

This was achieved through the technology in inventory management long before it became a standard practice to do so and through path- breaking supply chain logistics management.

In fact our Indian companies like First low cost Airline- Air Deccan's founder, G. R Gopinath, found his inspiration from the model followed by Walton.

Other business autobiographies/biographies of great entrepreneurs which I find interesting are Lee Iacocca, Henry Ford , Warren Buffet, Thomas Watson and others.

Importance of Effective Communication

June 11, 2013

I always thought that communication cannot be taught, how can mother understand what the child wants, when the child cannot speak or rather communicate anything, then what makes her feel that the child is in need of something.

This makes me feel that silence is louder than speech and communication's very first session of life begins with our interaction with our mother. But life and so is this world both are cruel and definitely as we grow, we start interacting less with mother and more with outsiders. And they need to be communicated properly if we want the world to listen and understand our thoughts.

Communication (from Latin “communis“, meaning to share) is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behavior. It is the meaningful exchange of information between two or a group of person.

Hence, the need to learn the communication skills becomes important in our life. Whether we become manager, Leader, Business man, Politician, Teacher or any other profession we choose, how well we communicate shows how much we can grow and how far we can go.

Rudyard Kipling said, “Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind”.

But it is not just limited to words which help us, sometimes non verbal communication also helps in communication.

The following are the advantages of communication:

It helps in achieving our goals as they need to be communicated to our self.

It helps in building stronger relationships, whether they are with colleagues, superiors, bosses etc.

It lays down the foundation to reduce conflicts among various groups.

It increases our chances of success as success ratio increases because of proper communication.

It helps us in understanding others, and if we are able to understand others we can lay down foundation of sound relationship.

It helps you in becoming a better employer and also a better employee.

It is also a great source of information as communication helps in proper exchange of Informations.

It also helps people in understanding us in a better way and somewhere effective communication saves time.

It helps other to adapt to our thoughts and ideas and if society accepts your idea you feel great.

It makes you more happy and delighted as communication relaxes you and helps is thinking new thoughts.

And the list goes on and on and it is not only limited to our professional life but extends to our personal life also.

I may not be able to communicate all the advantages of communication but this is the beauty of communication that sometimes in small communications we try to learn big learning lessons of communication.

Please keep on communicating and grow along with it.

Happy communication to all the readers.

Alumni Message- Shubh Kriti

Education and knowledge cannot be attained through ears, nor through the eyes, nor yet through the brain. In fact education and knowledge is not a matter, it is in man all the time. Nobody ever created it, man brings it from within. Then the question is 'why we look for it outside often?

Truth is, you require something, appreciable as an influence from external source. I received this stimulation of existing intellectual from the IMS Ghaziabad. There each of us was really stimulated by another.

In first few days, I was in complete awe. Doubted myself among the bubbling talent in the class room. But within few weeks with power of perception, of reasoning, of intellect and tremendous support from the faculties I found my place. When entered IMS, I was a plain milk and after two long years of churning there, I can not shy away thanking IMS for valuable butter within me. I congratulate and wish everyone who is was or will the part of this great institution.

My special thanks to: Ms ANEGHA SHUKRE madam I thank you for lifetime intellectual training. Really enjoyed your sessions !! You made me think a world beside machines.

Wanna make Money………Than Learn how to play with money……….

June 28, 2013

Wanna make Money………Than Learn how to play with money……….

Mohan and Sohan were two friends they both completed their post graduation together and joined corporate worlds. As they received their first salary and money got transferred in their accounts, they received a call from Bank to get Credit Card. Moment of proud for both of them as couple of months back they don't have money and now they were having money of their own i.e salary and others giving them more money i.e through Credit Card. As expected they applied for it and got it and after some time they were having cards of many banks and obviously spending increased and so the bill of cards. This incident is common with many of us.

Kahaani mein twist

Life was going smooth but when they started receiving bill statements Mohan got surprised as to what was told by company was not fulfilled and Sohan was feeling delighted. What happened? What went wrong? Banks are same for both, rules are same for both than what went wrong with Mohan that Sohan was able to avoid. The answer is Rules of using and paying for cards used. Rules are same but interpretation is different, Sohan interpreted them properly while Mohan did not.

Pay attention to following fact:

50 Days Interest Free Period: This is common line used as a sales pitch by company. This is not incorrect, just the fact of matter is that these 50 days are not given from the date of purchase, but from their billing cycle. Let me make you understand this with help of an example

If the bill generation date is 10 th of every month and I purchase something on 8 th than I will get 2 days as my bill generated on 10th and after 10 I get 20 days more to pay hence I got only 22 days (20 from bank + 2 as days before bill got generated)and I have to pay it and I feel cheated.

In another example, if I purchased goods on 11th of month than the bill will be generated on next months 10th day and 20 days bank will give hence the total becomes approx 50 days(30 days i.e from this month 11 to next month 10th + 20 days i.e which bank will give).

Moral of the story: know your billing date, do purchasing accordingly and pay money after using it for 50 days without interest.

Guys you will use somebody others money for 50 days without interest and also bank will give you reward points isn't it great….

Now this is one example of one bank credit card. lets make 3 credit cards and learn how to play with them, trust me thoda dimaag lagana padega but mazaa bahut aaega……

If I have 3 credit cards with different billing dates…..

Bank 1 —Say 10 th of every month

Bank 2 — Say 20 th of every month

Bank 3 — Say 30 th of every month

Now if you want to do purchasing around 11 to 15 of a month, use card of Bank1,if between 20 to 25 use card 2,and if between 30 to 5 use card 3.

Do this and manage your finances and use money interest free for maximum time limits and enjoy the privileges of bank's faithful and responsible customer.

And as I said “wanna make money than learn how to play with money”….in this case I am saving interest income hence it is indirectly making money and I am doing it by playing with bank's money.

Famous saying “Money Saved is Equal to Money Earned”

Sohan followed this rule and was happy, while Mohan felt cheated by banks….. Authority will never lie, you have to read between lines and be successful.

Stay tuned to read from my side on topic of Finances which will help you…“khelne mein mazaa aaega bus khelna agar aa jae to”

Note: I have tried to cover one aspect of credit card. The billing cycle dates of cards may vary from card to card. i have taken hypothetical example to help you in understanding this concept,50 days time period may again vary from bank to bank.

IMS Ghaziabad students got the first taste of it, when over 170 students and faculty members visited the most talked about “Kingdom of Dreams” on October 24th, 2013. The day long excursion trip for PGDM II year students was full of fun and frolic. We left the campus early morning singing and enjoying the ride. The spirit of this trip was very high.
