Alumniscence

After the successful host of the first guest lecture of the 2014 session , Alumni Committee of SIMSR invited its esteemed alumnus, Mr. Roshan Singh Nagi to speak on the topic of "Writing B-Plans, Participating in Competitions : Their Relevance for Your Careers" in Alumniscence held on 23rd August 2014.

A mere sneak into his profile reveals a person who stands out in the crowd. He is an alumnus of the most recent graduate batch of SIMSR, PGDM (2014). He also holds a degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Mech.) and a diploma in fine arts. Though young  and new  to the corporate world , Mr. Nagi has been proving his business acumen since his early college days.

As a student at SIMSR he had won over 100 national level 1st prizes in various Case Studies, Debates, Presentations, Extempore, Quizzes, Model United Nations at institutes like IIM-A, IIM-B, MICA, Jamnalal Bajaj etc. Also he was an active member of the Placement committee of the college. Presently he works with Marsh India Insurance Brokers and freelances as a soft skill trainer in his spare time. He is very passionate about social causes relating to education, sanitation and welfare of sex workers and has been associated with NGOs for the same.

Starting with a note of gratitude towards the college, his friendliness connected him immediately with the students. He shared his knowledge on how to create business and marketing plans which has been his forte and  offered an insight into his award winning Business Plan on Sanitary Napkins for Rural Women at affordable prices that was offered funding by various Venture Capitalists.

From use of authentic data source to reading annexure he dealt with every fundamental must -haves of business plans.  Apart from the presentation he also took various questions of students about projects, business plans, case studies, CGPAs, placements and start ups and answered them gladly. He stressed upon developing an insight into the real market and creating value addition to one's own skill sets by increased exposure to debates, competitions, outdoor researches and projects.

His message to the students was to stay confident and try on new opportunities of exploring the world beyond textbooks. It was a very interactive and insightful guest lecture. Students were very happy after attending the session and admitted that they had gained a lot from it in terms of useful knowledge that would help them in their career.

Listening to Mr. Nagi was a great experience. We are already looking forward to the next Alumniscence. 😁

The TEDxGateway Campus Connect finally happened @SIMSR!

It was one of the most awaited events organized by K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research. The event started with the introduction of the TED speaker Anand Damani who is also the SIMSR alumni, batch of year 2000. The crowd enjoyed the TEDxGateway speech video of speaker and responded enthusiastically by firing questions at him to know more about BLEEP and behavioral sciences. Anand on the other hand showed same valor in answering the queries and kept the audience engaged.

The next speaker of the event was Cynthia Koenig. Before addressing the crowd a video of her speech at TEDxGateway which happened two years ago was screened which introduced her social venture - WELLO and made us all realize the power of simplicity in innovation to solve the problems of the society. Just know your "Fundas"  & you're all set to get ACUMENED.

The first quiz of the season: "FUNDA"mentals was  held by ACUMEN,The quizzing & debating society of SIMSR.

SIMSRites were very enthusiastic & excited to test their knowledge & thus turned in huge numbers for the event. It started with a preliminary round where 20 Questions were displayed & we had to answer them individually. The questions were from a wide variety of topics, covering everything from business to sports to advertisements.

Two highest scorers from each class represented their class in the finals. The finalists gave each other a really tough competition. The different pattern of rounds like connecting different images to find a common link, & finding the answer with the help of different clues made each round very interesting. Finally after a lot of brainstorming Varun Ratnakaran & Ashay Pahadia from RM came out as clear winners.

All the participants had a good experience on being exposed to such a vast array of questions. Winners & runners ups were awarded with a trophy, certificates & prizes.

Hope ACUMEN conducts more of such events...

Onam celebrations at SIMSR

Onam is a festival that binds together people from all regions and religions. Onam is celebrated as the iconic representation of the prosperous reign that people had under the rule of King Mahabali. It was an era of peace, equality and happiness. But King Mahabali was forced to leave his people and go to the Netherlands. But the kind King asked for a boon to Lord Vishnu, the permission to visit his beloved people once a year. This occasion is celebrated as Onam.

SIMSR welcomed Mahabali with a radiant and picturesque Pookalam near the Nataraj statue at old SIMSR building and the students showed up in Kerala ethnic wear, Kasavu saree and Mundu to celebrate the spirit of Onam.

"Happy Onam to all SIMSRites..:)

The best people to guide the current confused lot of MBA students are always the Alumni. They are truly the biggest asset an institution can have and we at SIMSR are proud to have one of the best Alumni connect who are spread across all possible sectors in the business world.   SIMSRITes were very enthusiastic, alumni ensured that each and every query was answered and they enlightened the current chunk on how to go about in MBA. I had the pleasure of meeting three of our esteemed alumni: Ronak (PGFS, Class of 2014), Swati (PGIB-Finance, Class of 2014) and Nitisha (PGIB-Finance, Class of 2014). They were very cooperative clearing doubts of the audience and also giving tips on how to prepare for reputed financial institutions like DE Shaw, HSBC etc. Alumni also highlighted the fact that the first two tri-semesters are make or break for those from engineering background however from the third tri-semester onwards everyone is on an even ground to start with. They highlighted the importance of doing concurrent projects and their weightage in the final placements. For successfully cracking the interview, the alumni suggested students to portray their trueselves in front of the interviewer.  It was a really enlightening experience as we got to know the "unknown" things from the alumni themselves and they were comfortable helping us out clearing out our queries.   It was a great event, Thank you ALCOM- The official Alumni Committee of SIMSR!

SIMSR

The first national level inter-collegiate event to be held at SIMSR in this academic year, SPRIHA - 2014 - The Annual Intra-College Summer Project brought before us the best of the summer internships that our seniors had engaged in. After a grueling few initial elimination rounds, the semi-finals had 48 of the best interns competing against each other to gain the plaudits of being the intern having done the best summer project from SIMSR. At the end, it was  Gauri V. Paranjpe from PGDM Core who was declared to be the best summer intern from SIMSR.

Before SIMSR could catch its breath, it was time for the inter-collegiate SPRIHA, where the best interns from the top B-Schools in India would present the projects that they had worked in and how the company had benefited from their work. The participants were from IIM Tiruchirapalli, GIM, NITIE, TISS, VJTI and our own SIMSR. They were judged by four of the stalwarts from the industry - Mr. Rajiv Wadhwa - Brand Services Partner with Leo Burnett, Ms. Bhakti Prasad - Associated with AFCONS Infrastructure Ltd. managing the HR, Development & Administration functions, Mr. Anand Ramaswamy, an alumnus of SIMSR, 1997 batch, currently working with ICICI and Mr. Sanjeev Dixit, Chief People Officer at Allied Blenders & Distillers Pvt Ltd.

The audience were treated to some very enlightening presentations by all the candidates which provided everyone present in the auditorium with deep insights regarding the nuances of Marketing, Finance, Operations and HR. After having a really tough time in selecting the winner amidst so many brilliant presentations, the judges finally declared Gauri V. Paranjpe from SIMSR as the best Summer Intern for 2014 with Amjad Ali from NITIE bagging the Runner's Up prize. SPRIHA 2014 gave us an opportunity to organize the first national event of the academic year and we hope to have a plethora of such events in the coming days.

Inquizzitive, the most anticipated pan SIMSR marketing quiz event organized yearly by Interface, the exclusive marketing club of SIMSR, was held from 25th to 27th August. BRAND O MAN was the official mascot of Inquizzitive this year.

The event kick started with an online questionnaire as the first round.  The response was overwhelming, with around 180 teams of two participating in the event. After the short-listing of students for the second round, they qualifying teams had to sit for a written test conducted in Nalanda auditorium that comprised of crosswords and tricky questions to check the marketing and advertising acumen thoroughly.

The talented students who made through to the finale had to face the much coveted stage round of quizzing at the amphitheatre. Along with the general question answer and buzzer rounds, audio visuals and dumb charades were included in the quiz. It was amazing experience to witness students compete against each other meticulously.

At the end of the third and final round, the winners and runner-ups were declared and handsome cash prizes were granted to all of them. They were much appreciated by peers.

Apart from the inevitable win and loss of a competition, Inquizzitive as an event makes us aware of the gap between our own standing in terms of marketing knowhow and the benchmarks that are expected of any MBA student. It motivates us to gear up our skills and reach higher levels in further competitions.

I bet fellow SIMSRites are already looking forward to participate in next Inquizzitive!  I, for one, cannot wait.

I will keep posting about the cool happenings in college. Stay updated and  keep PGing! 😁

SIMSRites just finished celebrating an unforgettable event- Dandiya Night organised by the Student activity forum. The bright chaniya cholis and kedias created the perfect aura. Boogieing to the music was fun for not only those who participated but was also a visual treat for those who like to watch from the sidelines.

Prizes and gift coupons were distributed to the Best dressed male/female and Best dancer male/female. This event brought all the SIMSRites together and each one of them had the zeal and zest for the night. With this memorable  event  Navratris too come to an end.

Dear CAT/CMAT/XAT/IIFT/SNAP/IRMA/MICA/TISS Aspirants.. Business Knowledge is unavoidable for an MBA aspirant (whether you like it or not)... We are here to help you.. Visit Post Box 77 page for such interesting questions..!!

After a hectic first four months of our life at SIMSR where we encountered countless novel experiences, we were all ready to go back home for our much-needed Diwali vacations. A much needed two week break did all the students a world of good. All of us went back to our sweet homes, back to our parents whom we had really missed over our time at SIMSR (though at a B-School, you keep so busy that you hardly get time to remember your home except for an occasional recall of the caring and sheltered habitat provided by your parents before you arrived here).

But at the end of a lethargic couple of weeks with our families, all of us had started missing the hectic and fast-paced lived that we had got used to at SIMSR. So after a great time at home, we finally started our return journey. Bidding adieu to one's parents is always tough, but we have all now returned to our second home, SIMSR, refreshed and replenished, ready to embrace newer challenges and experiences in the days to come.

Hello Guys can you please help me out, i have scored 157 Marks in CMAT September 2014, and have got 81.22 Percentile with a rank of 8114.

Can you please suggest me some good colleges where i can apply.

Will i get a call from SIMSR ?

I will be thankful to you, Please Reply.

Nostalgia '14

Nostalgia, the annual alumni homecoming event is one of the most anticipated and biggest occasions in the college. This year it was no exception and needless to say that Nostalgia'14 was a tremendous success. The theme of this year was Safarnama - Road back to 77. Preparations had started well in advance and by 8th of November, the D day the entire college premise was embellished with lamps, posters, banners, pit stops showcasing glimpses of a student's journey to SIMSR and beyond. Every committee had put a stall in the amphitheater and Chanakya Building lobby.

By 3 pm alumni had started arriving in clusters and Alumni Committee members had begun registering them diligently. The event was inaugurated by honorable  Professor Dr. Satish Ailawadi .Those interested in sports were taken along by Sports Committee members and they tried their hands at badminton, squash and basketball.  From 5pm to 6 pm AGM (Annual General Meeting) was conducted in which we had 18 esteemed alumni from all walks of life. It was followed by Parichay, the networking event where  45 alumni interacted with each other and the faculty. The multilateral dialogue brought new perspective on current job requirements and global market scenario.

By late evening there were around 500 alumni who had paid visit to campus at the call of their alma mater. Furthermore batches of 2001 and 2004 were felicitated. Former students were more than glad to come on stage and share memories of their life at SIMSR. They were given gifts as a token of admiration and good luck for future. To top that there were spellbinding performances by NSPA and SIMSR's own band MAUJ. The serene classical and fusion music mesmerized everyone. After that DJ took over the stage and all the students and alumni shook a leg in the open theatre. It was a sight to behold. The ceremony ended at 11pm in a grand banquet dinner organized for our alumni. We gave gifts and collected feedback from them. They were very happy to be back to their own college and bade us a touching goodbye with a promise to come back again to the road of 77.
