SIMSR Talkies

SIMSR Talkies is the movie club of SIMSR started by a few ardent movie enthusiasts with the aim of providing regular entertainment to the students. By far the most celebrated club, this club occupies a special place in every student's heart. It's the club comprising of students who are enthused about movies be it Bollywood, Hollywood or any other cinema. Its primary objective has always been to impart knowledge of management through movies, which can be a great source of learning, from the movies ranging from 12 Angry Men teaching us negotiation of power or Invictus teaching us leadership and  other required management traits. To collaborate movie and television fans in a safe and constructive environment where their opinions are both considered and appreciated is another objective the club strives for.

The biggest argument for opening a movie club is the education we get from watching films. Films inspire college students highly. There are a lot of good documentaries that show us the actual reality. Keeping this in mind our club screens movies at regular intervals and before the screening a member spends five minutes with the audience to inform them about the various management principles reflected in the movie. With the commencement of the new session, we  have already had the pleasure of being to the screening of two movies. Sarfarosh was screened on the occasion of Independence Day and Rush a movie on the dramatic rivalry between the two world F1 champions was the other.

Besides movie screenings SIMSR Talkies also organises movie quizzes that bring together movie aficionados and quizzing enthusiasts on the same platform to battle it out. The quiz consists of movie related questions, trivia, dialogues, anything that might interest a movie lover.

Studio 77 is the latest venture from SIMSR Talkies- a movie magazine that focuses on various genres of movies like sci-fi, horror, comedy and drama. It also focuses on directors like Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, their style, the science and philosophy that goes into their movie making. Besides this the magazine contains movie reviews written by student members of our club. We also invite guest articles by other students and faculties .Though we are a closed club with a few members but are open to anyone who is not merely a spectator but knowledgeable about cinema.

What the Chuck!

What are the things that can be counted as integral parts of any management institute? There are case studies, presentations, assignments, events, competitions, deadlines and of course, stress. Stress management has thus become imperative for any student to excel in his/her endeavour. At SIMSR, stress management was dealt with a twist.

The Sports Committee in association with their annual sports fest, Yudh, organized a stress management talk that wasn't about meditation or crisis handling or any of these serious stress busters. This talk, by Deepak Gopalakrishnan, fondly known as Chuck Gopal, concentrated on the everyday struggles that a management student faces, in a light and comic manner. The speaker shared his experiences as an observer, and brought out certain aspects of management institutes that every student has experienced, but has never thought of as something that can be laughed about. Ranging from the premier institutes in the country to some of the B-schools that not many of us are aware of, the apprehensions and the turmoil, as he pointed out, are the same everywhere.

The students turned up in large numbers to attend this talk, as it gave them a much-needed break from the everyday routine of reading, writing and presentations. The students also interacted with the speaker, sharing their own personal experiences that made the talk more friendly and informal. The event was a huge success, and it got positive reviews from most of the students. It proved to be an extremely enjoyable morning, with the session injecting the right balance between learning and fun.

Event: Guest Lecture

Date: 31st July, 2015

The Guest Lecture Committee @ SIMSR invites successful business leaders to share their corporate experiences and bridge the gap between the concepts learnt in class and their practical utility in the corporate world. On 31st July, 2015, Mr. Ramesh Chandak, former CEO and Managing Director of KEC International, was invited for a guest lecture session at SIMSR to share his experience on 'Turnaround of KEC International'.  He is a meritorious Chartered Accountant and has completed his Advanced Management Programme from Harvard Business School.

The lecture started with Mr. Chandak introducing about KEC International, a part of RPG group, and the company's present scenario and turnover. Then he talked about the key factors which contributed to its growth as the scenario was completely different a few years back. The difficult years faced by the company were 1999-2002 when the company faced a great loss.

He then explained about the initiatives taken by him when he joined in as the CEO and MD of the company. The first step taken by him was the SWOT analysis which helped them develop new strategies with key focus on exploring new markets, increasing margins and reducing costs. Then they restructured their business by implementing these strategies. There were several Operational as well as Personnel strategic initiatives. They took an oath at KEC international to abstain from blame-games and he felt that this was one of the best policies at KEC. They started physically executing projects in local languages as communication was one of the biggest challenges they faced. The results were excellent and the company regained to a significant level.

The lecture concluded with Mr. Chandak speaking about  the key learnings from his experience. To mention a few, he spoke of how in such situations a long term strategy's vision is sufficient but a detailed short term plan is essential. Clearly defining roles and responsibilities by implementing Strategic Business Units (SBU) was a contributor in their success story. Introducing new ideas and benefitting from early-moved plans is also a great strategy to use in such situations. Prioritizing, Time Management, Proactiveness, Right Business Knowledge, Effective Communication and most importantly Stress on Ethics are the key ingredients which led to the turnaround of KEC International.

The 12th of October 2015 , what started off as a hustling afternoon, buzzing with the tech team setting up the amphitheatre for something grand to come, the creative guys running around jazzing the place up, and the curious stares waiting to see what the propagated event - AAGAAZ, was all about, turned out to be an event that was so highly scintillating, that reading up ahead, you would agree to our description of the event as music to the ears and a blissful scene to the eyes - and quite literally too!!!

Mauj kick started the evening with some sensational soft romantic songs albeit rather tough on the vocal chords! The song list ranged from Awari main, Dua to rolling in the deep to a few numbers of Pink Floyd!! If you ever heard music that hit you so deep within only to creep out in the form of goose bumps... then that would describe every moment Mauj accelerated our emotions to!

From Contemporary to House and from Bollywood to Freestyle, Grooves wasn't quite away from pushing us to the hilt with those oomph moves!! Together, Mauj and Grooves worked the evening in such perfect synergy that it would be wrong on our part to call the evening's performance any less than enthralling and captivating! On second thoughts, it had to .... especially if it meant ending with pelvic thrusts on Humma!! A perfect song From Bombay to end the inauguration of our theme!

And when all was done, the band sets down the mike, the dancers bow their way out and the comperes take their leave. So does it really mark the end?......

It is a powerful, flexible, cost and waste elimination method which results in organizational improvement. It focuses on process improvement by enhancing speed and efficiency. The trainer emphasized the importance of lean practices in workplace and elaborated the lean six sigma methodology. The methodology relies on collaborative team efforts to improve performance by systematically removing waste.

The training introduced the different stages of six sigma process improvement namely Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC). This course empowered the participants with project management techniques and helped them to implement lean six sigma by using various statistic techniques like project charter, conversion of Voice of Customer (VOC) to Critical to Quality (CTQ), Kano model and SIPOC. The students also learned various tools like process capability, MSA, FMEA & fishbone diagram used for process improvement. Also, they solved practical examples which helped them to gain conceptual clarity. Minitab, a statistical tool for statistical analysis, was used to analyze the process parameters through application of hypothesis testing, correlation, SPC, regression, run charts, process mapping and pareto charts.

The training was highly interactive, with the participants coming up with loads of questions which revolved mostly around real life industry problems. Post training there was a multiple choice based evaluation examination to test the understanding of the participants.  Overall, it was a great learning experience for all the participants!
