Life @ K J Somaiya Institute of Management

The placement season is upon us. It's a common sight in the campus that students, some happy, some sad, roam around the campus dressed in  formals braving the brutal October heat in a bid to get their dream placements in some of the best companies. However, two known foes stand in the way of this dream placement...Group Discussions and Personal Interviews. These two processes have left students baffled for ages, never seeming to become predictable, no matter how much 'practice' they put in.

To help students cross this hurdle with ease and confidence, Humanist - The HR Club of SIMSR, invited Mr. Ketan Gaikwad to deliver a session on how to effectively crack the GD-PIs. Having already organised Transcend, a series of mock GDs and PIs, the team thought some professional tips would be helpful. Himself being an alumnus of SIMSR, Ketan was more than happy to come back to his alma mater and help the current students in overcoming their apprehensions and master the process. The session was organised and was attended by the students of SIMSR in full force, making it an event with the largest turnout for any committee-organised event till date.

Currently working in Deutsche Bank, Ketan had always been one of the brightest minds in the college. He has been certified as a counsellor since the age of 16. After graduating from SIMSR, he was working with ICICI bank before shifting to Deutsche Bank. He also gives sessions at various reputed institutions wherein he gives GD-PI tips and tricks to both MBA students as well as aspirants

The start was simple, with Ketan asking the audience the problems they faced while facing Group Discussions. The audience, comprising of both 1st and 2nd year students, participated enthusiastically and put forth their questions readily. From there, tips and tricks started flowing out one after the other. The pointers like how to sit, when to talk, when to interrupt, how to put your point across were simple and effective.

Once the GD part was covered, the Personal Interviews part followed a similar pattern. Questions like "Tell me about yourself" and "Where do you see yourself in 5 years" were shown to be loaded guns by Ketan. The correct body language, words and tone to be adopted while answering questions in the personal interview were just some of the tips that Ketan had to give.

All in all, the session was an absolute hit among students, going by the feedback that the team received after the event. Taking a group photo with Ketan was a matter of joy and accomplishment for the team. It would be safe to say that the team enjoyed organising and executing the event immensely and looks forward to hold many more similar sessions for the students. After all, the dream placement remains only 2 hurdles away and as the Humanist tag line says - People Planning Progress.

                                          Entrepreneur Expo

Pathfinder Innovation & Entrepreneurship Cell @ SIMSR organized a two day long event - Entrepreneur Expo. It was aimed to provide a platform for the interaction of 12 entrepreneurs from various sectors with more than four hundred MBA students. It was a perfect opportunity for the entrepreneurs to engage talented MBA students and a learning experience for students. The objective of the Entrepreneur Expo was to provide a chance to wavering young minds to wet their feet through concurrent projects and internship opportunities. Last year, approximately 60 students were hired by various startups for concurrent projects which is the largest number achieved so far by any B-school in Mumbai.

                          Coca-Cola Wada Plant Industrial Visit

Early morning on 5th November 2015, a bunch of 32 students of K J SIMSR chattered excitedly amongst themselves, eagerly anticipating the day's event that lay ahead of them. K J SIMSR's Forum for Operations Research & Supply Chain Enthusiasts (FORSE) had organized an industrial visit to Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverage Providing Limited, held in collaboration with Purple Squirrel Eduventures.

Coca-Cola is the most popular and biggest-selling soft drink in history, as well as one of the most recognizable brands in the world. Their manufacturing practices are recognized as top in the class.

The Event Manager, Mr. Rafiq provided some fun facts about the Coca-Cola Company during the journey to the Wada Plant. The enthusiastic group reached the plant by 10:30 am. After giving a briefing of the rules and guidelines to be followed, an introductory session was conducted by Mr. Suryakant Jagdale (Plant Manager) which covered the product offerings, Quality Standards followed by them, Various Certifications acquired by them (ISO 9001, ISO 14000, ISO 50000), Types of Packaging done by the Plant (four types - Refillable Glass Bottles, Polyethylene Di-peptide, Canned, Tetra pack), Bottling operations performed for all types of beverages. Most importantly, he also told the students how the wastage was handled in an environment friendly way.

After this session, came the most fun part - the students were taken to the Assembly Line and briefed about the Processes and Operations undertaken by the plant. The multitude of doubts and questions which the students were armed with on witnessing the workings were later addressed fully when a question answer session was conducted by Mr. Suryakant Jagdale. The visit was finally concluded at around 12:00 pm but not before the group was offered with refreshing cold drinks by the company.

The students left the plant with insights into the manufacturing processes and the challenges faced. Industry visits sensitize students to the practical challenges that organizations face in the business world, and hence are an integral part of the learning process. This new learning would be beneficial when the participants step into the corporate world.

The final teams from SCMHRD, IMT Ghaziabad, K.J. SIMSR and teams from NMIMS battled for the coveted trophy. The intensity in the seminar hall was sparked further with the cross questioning by the judges and the audience about the feasibility of plans presented. The hours proceeded with mounting excitement of participation of both contestants and audience.

The competition ended in the evening declaring winner and runner up. Valuable insights, feedbacks and experiences were shared by the honourable judges. Among all the companies that visited the campus so far, BFSI companies had a significant share followed by IT and other sectors. About the success of the placements this season, he says "The biggest accolade goes to the student driven Placement Committee (actively supported by the External Relations Team of SIMSR), which is a panel organising, facilitating and regulating the summer and final placements on the campus. Right from the beginning, students are encouraged to choose their specialization and then they are provided with updated and relevant curriculum focussed on meeting the current requirements, industry demand and job market demand.                          Fundamentals, The Freshers Quiz

When James Daly, a humble theatre manager, decided to popularize the word quiz, little did he know that millions and millions of people are going to be hooked to it forever. The fervor was evident during "Funda"mentals , a general quiz exclusive for freshers conducted by Acumen, the Quizzing and Debating Society at the K.J. SIMSR. The quiz was intended as a welcome gift and it did turn out to be a wonderful one. "Funda" quizzing is a form of quizzing which has gained popularity in colleges due to the fact that the answers are workable from the question and is a lot of fun at the same time. Loosely speaking a Funda is an interesting fact at the heart of a question. Every good question contains a little nugget that tells something that one didn't know already. With these "Funda"mentals,  it was a fun-filled and event evening. The event received an overwhelming response with more than 110 quizzing enthusiasts participating in it. The quiz was designed in two phases: Preliminary round and the finals. Preliminary round had a total of 26 questions which was aimed to check the familiarity of the participants across topics such as current affairs, sports, business, and entertainment. The questions were in the A-Z format wherein the first question's answer started with the letter A, second with B and so on... This ensured that all the participants could really rack their hands and come up with some clever guesses. After a lot of hushed murmurs, animated gestures and plenty of Eureka moments later, top six teams were arrived but not before a round of sudden death for the last spot. The finals were designed to up the notch in terms of quizzing standard and the finalists responded in fine style. Various new formats such as Connect, Dries, Pounce and Bounce which are the norm in B- school quizzes were introduced to the participants which they lapped up eagerly. It was phased out over a total of five rounds which saw some brain racking questions, brilliant answers and some entertaining guesses. After rounds of nail biting tension, and not one, not two, but after five tie-breakers on the trot, Mayank Kalkar and Mihir Daryapurkar from International Business (IB) emerged victorious. That they pulled this out after trailing the entire quiz is a testimony to the quality of the finalists. The audience too had their share of fun with questions for them and lots of chocolates. Prof. Debraj Ghosal and Prof. Dipika Attavar, faculty mentors of Acumen took time out of their busy schedule to come and grace the event and highlighted the importance of such extra-curricular activities. If an event was measured by the enthusiasm displayed, then "Funda"mentals was a rousing success. This will motivate Acumen to come up with more shows and in turn hope that students continue to turn up in large numbers for subsequent events.
