BREXIT AND REXIT: A GUEST LECTURE AT SIMSR

Brexit is all over the news in recent weeks, with wide implications on international business across the globe. As such, it becomes an event every manager, current and future, must track. As such, the Guest Lecture Committee of SIMSR organised a guest lecture for students in the college with Mr. Aditya Srinivas, who is the COO and Chief Economist of the Bombay Stock Exchange Brokers Forum.

The major theme of the lecture was "Brexit and Rexit", and it started off with an overview of how Britain's exit from the European Union would affect different sectors in the Indian as well as World economy. The strategic implications of this move by Britain were also discussed through the possible counter-moves which could be made by other countries. The speaker, instead of merely glossing over points, went into the depth of the subject to ensure that the audience could fully understand the gravity of the issue and all its outcomes.

As Swami Vivekananda #quotes, “Without an unbroken chain of discipleship—Guruparampara—nothing can be done,”
Students at K.J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research, carrying forward the legacy of #Teachersday Celebration, acknowledges sincere regards to all Faculty Members.
The teachers at #SIMSR are the means of realization. They constantly focus on communicating rather than talking or imparting doctrines which is an asset #SIMSR owns. Their strength lies in believing in what the student aims at, howsoever, the dream may be unlikely or outlandish.

Each one of us wants to leave a mark in our society and what better way to do it than touching the lives of the promising young generation. Teaching is like a domino effect, one small change in a student’s life compounded over the years affects so many people we can’t even imagine. Ankur - ELI is one such opportunity to start the chain reaction in the students by igniting a passion for learning, through the English language.  We have now initiated the ELI - Experiential learning initiative for S.K. Somaiya Vinay Mandir for this academic year. This initiative has been coined as “Ankur”. Our main objective here is to educate the students of this school with English - which is also their second language through building listening and speaking skills. This initiative is precisely for the students from 5th Std to 8th Std which comprises of around 101 students in total. As a part of Experiential learning initiative program four of our faculty coordinators and 56 other student coordinators from SIMSR have taken lead role and are responsible for nurturing the students this year.

The Experiential learning initiative usually has a total of 20 sessions with them stretching around for 8 months, starting from August 2016. Our main focus here is on imparting basic knowledge of English and vocabulary, along with which we also try to improve their communication skills. An important thing to note here is S.K. Somaiya Vinay Mandir school does not charge any fees to children and neither do we. We are proud of what we do and the way we serve. We all know It is an uphill task and we have a lot of responsibility, but the right foot has been put forward & every mentor seems to be motivated in every session Learning is always a two-way process. Students learn from teachers what a book can offer. But in the process we too as Mentors learn a lot of things beyond the books. Be it how a 5th Standard student would use a whitener to cover up her mistakes or be it a kid who would in his sweetest way compliment the magician saying “If you are so good in creating magic, then why are you doing an MBA, be a joker”. It is so amazing to see kids being so smart in their own charming way.  As Gandhiji said, “Be the change, you want to see around in this world” Yes…!! Ankur is that change!

We had a wonderful Foundation day yesterday, with Rajkumar Hirani being our chief guest.  His movies such as लगे रहो मुन्नाभाई, 3 Idiots, PK, मुन्नाभाई MBBS all entertain, and yet convey a message on the world we live in, the systems that capture us, and the freedom we should seek.He spoke about all this and more.  He connected to the audience, our students, faculty and friends.  It was great to have him there.  He also mentioned, when he saw and walked through our campus, that had he visited earlier, he would have filmed 3 Idiots on our campus!!He inspired the students to follow their obsession.  Something they would love to do, and follow their dreams.  He also said, that they should pursue their dream and obsession fearlessly.  He mentioned how his father wanted him to be a CA, but allowed to him to join film and theatre, when he saw that his true calling was in the performing arts.

On the occasion of the Foundation Day, we also released 'Karamshi', the English Translation,  of the book પરથમ પગલું માંડીયું, written by Varsha Adalaja as a beautiful story on his life inspired by his biography.  This original book is a story, inspired by his life.  This book is to make his life more accessible to all.

Karamshi Somaiya was an entrepreneur.  He tried his luck at various businesses as a young man, and finally succeeded in the sugar business.  But he always used to say, that one must alway earn money the right way, but at the same time, making money should not be your only goal. Money once earned was to be used in the service of one’s धर्म (Dharma), the wider community, the nation and the world.  And particularly, to build a more inclusive community, by advancing opportunity and providing care to those that society has marginalised and/or left behind.  This still is largely the text of the Diwali resolution that we write every year, and work we try to do.
