UBS crosses another major milestone Ranked 19th last year, Panjab University Business School jumps to 11th position in a Cfore survey, TOC reports Times News Network Chandigarh: Our budding management honchos have done it again. And this time they have done it even better. Jumping up a whopping eight positions on the approval ratings this year is the Panjab University Business School, which has been ranked at number 11 by a special Cfore survey published by the a leading English weekly news magazine. The business school was ranked 19th last year.
The main reason behind the jump is an overall improvement in the average pay package in the placements as well as a marked appreciation in the quality of research done by the faculty of the department," says UBS chairperson Prof Satish Kapoor. The survey which included 6,345 students and 1,125 faculty members has based its findings on six main criteria namely, intellectual capital, industry interface, international linkages, placement performance, infrastructure and facilities and extra-curricular activities. Other parameters for selection included recruitment satisfaction, student satisfaction and faculty satisfaction.
Aditya Gupta, a second year MBA (marketing) student also attributes the fillip in rankings to the improvement in the quality of placements.
Even though the number of students has increased, we have had more and better placements, he says adding that this year the maximum pay package has touched a whopping Rs 12.5 lakh per annum."
With Fortune 500 companies like Ingerolls Rand, Indian majors like Wipro, HCL, E-sys, and others flocking to the department for placements during the last academic session, the future looks bright.
Abhishek Mishra, another final year student has a different take on the issue. With the economy booming, most B-schools have 100 percent placement but what makes UBS stand apart is that it has emerged a winner against odds. Although students get admission after appearing in the Common Entrance Test (CAT), 40 per cent of the seats are reserved and despite this we have done so well."
The school also does not have any regional biases as we have students studying from all over the country," adds Abhishek, who himself is from Orissa.
This year we have worked hard and communicated well too," says KG Mallikeshwaran, another student, is the reason for UBSs success.
Considering that the entry level percentile of students in the placements have increased from 92 per cent last year to 95.34 per cent this year, the hard working part seems obvious. We have successfully competed in several national level competitions, which has also given the overall image of UBS a big boost," he adds. Add to that the impressive figure of the number of PhDs, which has scored the brownie points in the survey as far as the parameter of intellectual capital is concerned, the school has come out as a topper. But like every other pursuit of perfection, UBS too has a long way to go. We need to have a better industry interface and our curriculum needs to be changed according to industry requirements," says a student who refused to come on record.
We are good and we need to go to town about it," says another pointing that UBS was downplaying its achievements.
PU Vice-Chancellor honoured at Industry-Academia interfaceExpress News ServiceChandigarh, September 9:CHANDIGARH Management Association (CMA) conferred Achievers Award-2004-05 on Panjab University Vice Chancellor Prof KN Pathak and Chairman of Kamla Dials RK Saboo for their contributions in their respective fields. The awards were conferred at the Industry-Academia Interfaceorganised by CMA at PU today.
V-C Pathak, however, lamented the lack fo trust between the industry and the academia and observed that the industry should encourage the academia to evolve and overlook initial failures. Profit alone should not be the criteria for collaborative work, said the V-C.
He further informed about the Centre for Industry Institute Partnership Programme Cell (CIIPP Cell) which was set up in 1995 and offered a significant data base of the industry.
RK Saboo, in his speech, emphasised the need for preparedness for change. He wondered why ethics, hard work, commitment to excellence and accountability did not form a part of the education being imparted.
President CMA BM Gulati said the 38-year-old organisation was a catalyst of positive change in every management domain in the region and was committed to providing management excellence.
Director CIIPP Prof AK Sahejpal informed that 68 corporate bodies were availing the services and the universitys turnover was more than Rs 1.20 crores through various services offered by the Cell. Prof Satish Kapoor, Chairman UBS and Past President CMA Col. PK Vasudeva (retd) also spoke on the occasion.
