Hi. I have completed C.A. and am presently preparing for C.F.A. (Int.) Level2 Exam.:cheerio: I have 3 years of good article-ship experience and no post qualification experience.

I am planning for MBA from some reputed B school.

But I am really confused as to "Is it worth for Me to go for MBA at this stage taking into consideration the opportunity cost as well as the work experience sacrificed during the two years or is it better if I take up some suitable job ???? (because after the two yrs MBA I'll still be treated as a fresher as against my friends who'd have gained two yrs of Work-Ex)???" :lookround:

Also all good B-schools with 1yr program require couple of yrs work-ex. I think it wud be diff. for me to do it 2 yrs l8r once I start working.

Please Advice. :

Also pl suggest the B-schools I should look at.

With such a strong finance background I suggest your targets for MBA shud only be IIM-A,C,B, XLRI and ISB.
you will be one of a kind in the whole batch 😃 :

Gettin into B will be easy as they hv extra marks for CA. Also L will give weightage bcoz of commerce background. I think u should try for IIM ABCL XL FMS and even ISB or abroad through GMAT. 😛

I too am a cost accountant completed Grad.CWA. Also I have completed both CA Inter and CS Inter. Also cleared first group in CA Final and left with only one group. I have written CAT cosistently for the past 3 years. Managed 88 percentile in the first two attempt and got a call from IIM-B as they are the only iims who give extra weightage to professional courses of CA, ICWAI and CS. Still I disn't cleared PI. This time I got 90.xx% and aced the calls of IIM-L,IIM-B,IIM-S and expecting a couple more. So u too have a sure shot of getting a call with decent score especially from IIM-B. But whether to do MBA depends on individual perspective. And i for one would surely recommend IIM PGP's only for CA's. So go ahead and bell the cat.:

An IIM-B call at 80 to 90%ile? Is that much preference given to CAs? Dind't know that.

dude its ca
india's toughest paper accepted by guinness book of world records

& grt work ppl who ve cleared their ca & now going for mba
i appeared & cleared in 1 group of pcc in may 2010
appeared in cat in nov 2010 but it did not work out for me(eng ruined me)

so now ll clear pcc first in this may then ll again strike cat in nov 2011

Even the pass criteria of these courses are mind boggling. A mere 40% in each paper will get u pass in that paper. But u have to get overall 50% to clear the exam. So even if u passed individually in each paper but got one less mark for 50% average, you have to write all the papers again. I myself got screwed like this a couple of times:lookround:. So even if the operation is success, the patient will die. Getting a 50% may look easier but even the topper itself can get around 65-70% and average scores of students get passed will be around 52-55% only. The overall result of this system is, only hardcore students can clear the exams:cheerio:. Try talking to a CA student, you will know about what is sweet and smooth mental torture.

I didn't mean any offense. My brother is a CA and is giving his CFA now, but he didn't know that he stood such a good chance at an MBA at ISB. Will let him know. 😃

Really ? Even am surprised that B gives so much weightage to CA / CWA and CS. Did you have work experience when you applied ? Because I don't think the IIMs give any weightage to articleship/training period work experience right ?

This is coming as a pleasant surprize though

Nope I didnt have a single month of work experience and IIMs wont give any weigtage to articleship also. But they will be counted in Interview. So no worry. All CA's have to do is clear the sectional cut-off.

the reason for pref given to ca/cs/cwa is these students through their training & studies ve now been cut out for finance
like enggs r preferred in operations these r pure finance people

they ve been through balance sheets cost statements etc form 10+ only
also with commercial laws at every part they ve legal knowledge
& usually side by side b com is preferred so they a desirable knowledge of eco too

& buddy may be articleship is not considered as work ex but alas it gives u practical exp of the world

To give you an idea.

If we assume 10000 student appear for CA CPT (i.e level 1), 25 % clear and shift to CA PCC

Of these 2500 students appearing for CA PCC (i.e. level 2) , 8 % (May 2008 official figure) clear and shift to CA Final. i.e. Out of 2500, 200 students clear.

Of these 2 students appearing for CA Final (i.e. last level), 6% clear (May 2010 official figure) i.e. out of these 200 only, 12 become CA :

i.e. Out of 10000 students register for CA course, only 12 students ultimately become CA  Those 12 too exhaust themselves after 3.5 years of article ship and just want to get rid off the course. In May 2010 exam, around 900 candidates became CA, the number which is less than total number of seats in IIM ABC

In turn, IIMs dont offer work experience status to that articleship :lookround:
Although they have started recognizing by giving additional weightage

Thanks guys fr the helpful replies. :cheerio:

But no1s mentioned JBIMS, NMIMS, Sydnem, Welingkar here. Is it worth spending 2 precious years at these schools ???????? :lookround:

Also 1 yr Exec course at IBS wud require Work-ex no as far as I know?

Good to know abt the preference for CAs. Missed CAT this time. Appearing for CET now. . Will try for GMAT now maybe. Do I have any good options. Any good Exec. courses Indian/ Abroad u guys aware of ?? :

Also 1 friend told that IIMs R accepting GMAT scores this time. Is that true?
Thanks guys fr the helpful replies. :cheerio:

No other BSchools except IIM ABCL and if u want, XLRI , FMS thats it. If u just want to do MBA anyhow, then even JBIMS. But not more than that.
One more option can be, wait for 2-3 years and do Executive MBA from IIM ABC.
Or take GMAT and try for ISB in India or top institutes in foreign. But it will require a work ex of at least 2-3 years.

I absolutely agree with ABCLIKS. A CA can/should do MBA only from IIMs and equitable premier institutes.:cheerio:

Hats off to u,if u gave PCC and CAT both together during ongoing articleship.:cheerio:

First of all, congrats for clearing CA.(after all being a CA final student,i can understand the odds of passing CA when the results is record low. This time around, results have improved from 4pc to 10pc

I would suggest u to go for Work experience. In the same time clear L3 of CFA.If i am not wrong, u will be CFA holder, when u have 3 or 5 years work exp in finance sector.
While working, u can have solid prep for CAT and GMAT;regarding foreign institutes, plz see the lists of top b-schools being published by FT or Forbes.
For indian b-schools;go for IIM-A,B,C,L;FMS,MDI,ISB,XLRI.:cheerio:

Did u clear finals in first attempt?
If yes, that will help u bag proper lucrative job whose work exp will be added advantage when u go for PI.
