“If agriculture goes wrong, nothing else will go right”-M S Swaminathan
Though agriculture sector contributes only approx 14% to GDP, it provides employment to almost 56% of population. Therefore, any improvement in agriculture will not only improve the life of farmers but also the life of large section of population who are directly or indirectly involved in agriculture.
Realizing the significance of agriculture, government has launches an ambitious mission to double the farmers income by 2022. To realize the dream of the mission, government has subsequently launched several schemes like Pradhanmantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana, Soil Health card scheme, Krishi SAMPADA Yojana, MEGA food park scheme, Gowardhan scheme, Parmpragat Krishi Yojana etc.
Moreover, government has also approved the recommendation of Swaminathan Committee to raise the MSP up to 1.5 times of the cost.
Further, government has adopted an integrated and multi-dimensional approach to address almost all the issues of farmers. The Bottom-up approach of agriculture planning adopted.
Doubling of farmer’s income includes both, the increasing income and reducing the cost. The rationalization of fertiliser subsidy and DBT (Direct benefit transfer) in fertilizer will benefit in reducing corruption and reduction in the cost of production.
Challenges: - The major challenges are low level of awareness among farmers about the use of modern technologies, reluctance of farmers to adopt new technologies, Youth in India not looking agriculture as a Nobel profession. Agriculture needs to be made attractive and remunerative.

A) DOUBLING FARMERS INCOME
"if agriculture goes wrong, nothing will goright."m.s swaminathan
India has set a very ambitious target of doubling farmers’ income by 2022.The govt. initiative to increase farmers’ income is welcome as it is central to dealing with agrarian crisis in india. The focus is now on profitability rather than just productivity aspects of farmer. This can be turn into a reality by following ways.
Replacing open ended subsidies with direct benefit transfer for seed and fertilizers would not just help target right end users and plug pilferages in the system but also promote more judicious use of these inputs.DFI by 2022 is not achievable without making farmers resilant to climate change impacts and promote CSA practices to sustainably increase their productivity.
It is high time for govt to ponder about moving towards nutrition security rather than food security and NATIONAL NUTRITION MISSION will solve this purpose.Although india is the second largest food grain producer of the worlr but the country’s export basket hardly reflects its large food diversity.Without open andstable export scheme there is no predictabilityfor farmers to access global market.
Farmers must be integrated into modern value chain that can raise their income and also minimize riskthat arise from middle man and markets and for this purpose govt has decided to invest around 2000 cr to transform around 22000 local mandis in to GRaMs and also arounf 1400cr food processing sector.
Besides this govt has also taken initiative to help animal husbandry and fishery farmers through various initiatives in budget.Use of ICT has been successfully tested for timely delivery of cropping, weather and marker=t information to farmer making digital agriculture as backbone for modern farmingwithout which DFI by 2022 isnt achievable.
