Prime Minister set a target of doubling farmer's income by 2022. Indeed, this is laudable albeit herculean task. Increasing the income of farmers without increasing price to consumers make this task even more formidable.
The best way to increse farmer’s income is by market reforms. On April 2016 prime minister launched National Agriculture Portal. e-NAM is a pan india portal in which farmers can sell their yield. Farmers will have now more options to sell and they can get good price. But whatever seems easy for us may not be easy for farmers. Farmers have the habbit of selling their yield to local aggregate. Sometimes their yield are so small that distant buyers may be interested in buying them.
Recently, Centre is providing 1.5 times the cost of production to the farmers. It is a good move but sometimes it led to market distortion. It also make their yield uncompetitive in global market. So agriculture alone can’t increase farmer’s income. Diversification of income is necessary like investing in livestock, fisheries etc.
Food processing is yet another sector which can help to increase farmer’s income. Lots of food get waste in supply chain network. Construction of warehouses, coldchain storage etc will help in reducing waste.
Yes doubling farmer’s income by 2022 is a challenge but with proper implementation and good governance this is achievable.
