How is this different from an MBA programme?
Business Management has been developed on principles derived from the Industrial Revolution and the idea of Capitalism – its main focus is on profit and financial growth. The Development Sector focuses on improving the lives of the underserved and solving social issues facing society. Given the difference in reasons for existence, overall goals and motives, the way both these sectors look at human beings, the kind of culture and structure that is needed in business organizations versus social organizations etc., the Development sector needs its own mantra of leadership and management which is grounded in the reality of this sector. That’s why a Development Management programme is very different from a Business Management programme (MBA).

PGP-DL is a one-year rigorous academic and field experience. There are 8 terms which include 6 Class Room Terms and 2 Field Terms. The Field Terms include 2 weeks of structured field immersion in a district in India called Realising India, 8 weeks of residency with a partner organisation to work on real development sector organisation problems.
The curriculum is divided into three broad phases – Context to Mission, Mission to Organisation and Organisation to Impact. The first phase sets the context to the development sector. Students are exposed to various perspectives on development and also gain a good understanding of the environment within which the development organisations operate – social, political, historical, economic, etc. The next phase is focused on development of capabilities of students on various aspects of organisational functioning in the development sector. To be able to achieve their goals and visions, organisations need to become more mindful and systematic about every aspect of their organisation's functioning – mission, resources, people, processes, structures, learning etc. The final phase focuses on using the knowledge and appreciation of working across key functions of organisation to have better impact, scalability and sustainability of development organisations.
