Slowing Down the Rajdhani Express
“What? I didn't understand a word you said!” complained the Interview panel at one of the premier IIMs, my intimidating HR, everyone on a phone call and my mom. I wanted to express myself, but was always mocked for the speech rate of a ‘Rajdhani Express ‘ & was subject to ridicule amongst my friends & family.
Born in a family of cops, frequent transfers meant I had to shift across cities making new friends, always devoid of stability. What made it worse was that I used to speak at super fast rate of 250 words/min, whereas the normal speech rate is 120-180 words/min. Result being - people used to laugh at the way I spoke. I started assuming the personality of Jester - one whose only life purpose is to crack jokes and make people happy at his own expense. But I wasn't happy! I found comfort in Vada Pav - It was sugar, spice and everything nice. I started writing about Vada Pav which led to people calling me Akshay Vadapav.
Things got real serious when I joined KJSIMSR for my MBA. Everyone seemed to be in a hurry to get placed in the best company & score the highest marks. I had to do something now! So I started interacting with almost everyone in college with small talks & used to practice their style for hours. One day, I happened to attend a Toast Masters meet & gave my first table topics speech for 2 minutes. I had no stage fear but was critical of my speaking rate. Despite giving a speech with other ace speakers, I won!
Things took a dramatic turn since then, shedding my inhibitions I realised my new found love for public speaking. I rehearsed for hours at end and managed to slow down my speech rate by 70%. I started speaking about my love - Vadapav on public platforms instead of words & pictures. Now Vada Pav is my second name & Public Speaker is what they call me!
The Rajdhani Express has finally slowed down !
