Although the GK section is not considered while calculating the overall %ile of the MAT exam, but some colleges do go through the distribution of marks scored in each section. So it would be inappropriate to neglect that section completely.

The written SNAP exam has some serious standard imbibed in it. So is the GD-PI process, it can be really taxing! But at the same time a lot of aspirants eventually get selected from the waiting list because many aspirants (with high scores) also end up getting calls from CAT and XAT based colleges.

The "fresher thing" is merely a myth... don't let that dent your confidence. Infact most of the aspirants who wish to pursue specizlization in HR are 'generally' freshers! Yes but in the overall sense, getting into the HR program of TISS is indeed difficult... because afterall, its one of THE BEST the country has to offer! :)

Thankyou for sharing your perspective. Well if what you are suggesting was to happenn, then I guess... anyone who doesn't performs well in the exam won't apply to any of the institutes right? Or another situation is aspirants will start applying according to their marks obtained. Think about it... what complex scenarios might develop because of that. Moreover, there are indeed few selected institutes where one can apply even after the SNAP results. The payment scheme has been made such that all the institutes get a fair look at the bright folks out there and it doesn't ends up becoming a lopsided event. It has to be a win-win situation, for both candidates and all the institutes. Consider this, institutes under the SYMBI umbrella which have comparatively less cut-offs will each have to deal with probably around 1000+ candidates for the GD-PI process (if what you're saying were to happen). Doesn't seems feasible right?
Now I sincerely hope you understand that SNAP is an exam that caters to 'many' institutes not 1 or 2 (+) SIU is an University that does not falls under the Government regime. A li'l knowledge is a very dangerous thing and one shouldn't pass a judgement untill he/she has been part of the 'experience.' Can you come up with the example of 'ANY' institute (in similar bracket) which doesn't charges before its own exam is conducted? Infact a very reputed college of Mumbai conducts its exam 3 times for admission to the same academic year and charges every single time.
Would you still call it a money making scheme considering the college is so very reputed? Education is a 'business'... it doesn't comes free, accept it! , and therefore the phrase "mint money out of this" is totally wrong. It is rather a revenue generating scheme for the college where an aspirant wants to apply, is there anything wrong with that? NO! Another downside (example) of what you are 'proposing':- Let us assume a hypothetical situation. Fees can be paid after results are declared (suppose). Results are out. Suppose 'X' institute requires candidates to score say minimum 100 marks to be eligible for the GD-PI process. How many will be eligible (Think!)? Now another institute 'Y' under the same University has cut-off= 60. How many will be eligible (Think!!)? more than 50% of the janta won't be eligible to apply for 'X' right (now think the same situation in terms of institute 'Y'). Its obvious this will lead to a lopsided situation!!! If you are still not satisfied with the justification then you can use the PM. ATB for your future endeavours

TISS does not have sectional cut-offs... so you can do some "damage control" there.
Written Test - comprises of Maths & Data Interpretation, Verbal Skills, General Knowledge and Business Awareness.
Group Discussion - topics are typically current news or social issues. ============================================================ Go through the Manorama Yearbook; a leading National Daily; business newspapers like Economic Times and magazines like Outlook/ Competition Refresher.
============================================================ Some "general tips" to imbibe are:-
1. Concentrate on the section that you are good at. But not at the cost of all other sections.
2. Divide your time and stick to it.
3. Don't get stuck on one thing. If you can't crack it, move ahead and come back to it later. ============================================================ GD-PI comes later... but still you can try incorporating the following good 'traits'"-
1. Speak good content.
2. Don't argue unnecessarily.
3. Agree to disagree.
4. Treat other members with respect.
5. Maintain eye-contact with all the group members since this gives you a chance to be seen as a leader.
6. Have an upright and energetic body posture. Good Luck

Well indeed you have to apply to CAT colleges separately while filling the registration forms. Just that you don't have to apply the fees separately, that's because IIMs are government funded institutes.

Well without specifying any college, I would answer it this way- there are some institutes where aspirants dream to be in! While there are institutes which would provide facilities, would make available "oh-so-good " provisions (for eg, full course fee scholarship), would be fantastic with hospitality because its actually them who are chasing the bright folks, not the other way round! :)

I hope you could comprehend what I was trying to point out

Hey. Tomorrow is my MAT exam(online-8th September 2012) and I am getting bit worried with the way I am going to approach this exam as this will be my first entrance exam for B-school.

Can anyone guide me to how to approach the exam.
Even though I feel I am good in verbal and DI but the problem is with Quant and GK part
And how many questions should I attempt in GK section ?
