Official Quant thread for CAT 2013

It takes 4 hours to travel from A to B. To travel from A to C, the person will have to travel one kilometer more every minute to complete the journey in the same time. If A to C is 40 km more than the distance from A to B, find the distance between A to B.

take this -How many pair of letters in the word AMERICA have exactly the same number of letters in between as in the English alphabets?E R I C A - 3 in between , in eng. E D C B A , sameso just 1
exactly.. EA is the only pair.. thanks..

My take 200kms
he has to travel 1km/min more every minute. so total distance that he travelled more = 4*60 = 240

now this is 40 kms more than a to b so 200 is the disa=tance bet a and b

"now this is 240KM more than a to b not 40 i guess" pls correct me. if m wrng..

Consider three positive integers x,y,z. now 1/x + 1/y =1/z. Find the number of solutions if x=12?a) 7 b) 11 c)12 d)infinite. if anna and akka had to take some medicines, one of them can take more than 100 medicines, also one of them should take atleast 150% and atmost 250 % of the other. Find the maximum number of medicines taken by both combined.a)247 b) 346 ) 347 d) none of theseConsider a rectangle (0,0), (2,0),(2,1),(0,1). Now what is the probability that a point is chosen in the rectangle such that the point is more closer to the point than (3,1).?
1) solving
2) None of these
x+2.5x = 3.5x
now x cab be 100
so 350

3) Very poor in geo 😛 😛

40 km?
Do you feel data is crct ?

1) 7
2) makes no sense, if one can take more than 100, he can take any amount, so infinite
3) more closer to the point ______ than (3,1) - which point?

Don't know the answer. Sorry

@krum more closer to origin.. sorry for the typo.2) he should take atmost 250 % of the other who is restricted not to take more than 100. 3) approach please for 1)

Let the distance between AB be x,
So as per the condition, (x/4*60 + 1)*4*60 - x/4*60 *4*60 = 40
isse to x hi eliminate ho raha hai..kaha gadbad ho rahi hai @krum bhai ?

A-B - x km
A-C - x+40 km

speed - s km/min

given

x/s=4*60
(x+40)/(s+1)=4*60

dividing both
=>x/(x+40)=s/(s+1)
=>sx+x=sx+40s
=>x=40s

seems data is inconsistent

variable taken is getting eliminated. Please check qstn again. Data inconsistent IMO.

343 none ?
@catter2011 i dont know.. i dont have the OA. i took an exam today. these are the questions from that test.

I'm 100% sure of the question. My variable was getting eliminated too. Couldn't find the answer. They gave really weird questions. There was another one like this:

The average marks of those who passed in an exam is 60 and those who failed is 25. If the average of all the students is above 43 but not greater than 49, then find the total marks of the class.

Yup i think data is contradicting.. once it says that it is 40kms more and the other calculation says 240..

probability 17/24 ?

x pass, y fail
=>43

5(12x+5y)/(x+y)

taking x+y=5; (4,1); (3,2); (2,3); (1,4)

4,1 => 48+5=53
3,2 => 36+10=46
2,3 => 24+15=39
1,4 => 12+20=32

so 3,2

so total = 60*3+25*2=180+50=230
