[Official] Singapore Management University (SMU)

i am joining SMU MBA 2013. i spoke to one of the alumni of SMU MBA 2011 regarding the stay and stuff. she said it is better to stay close to the school initially and can move in the latter part of the course depending upon ur internship offers ...

Hi!

I am planning to apply for a Full time MBA in Singapore Management University in 2013. But I am not sure if I should apply or wait for more time.

I have completed two years of work experience in the social sector. I work in marketing for a social enterprise.

I scored 620 in my GMAT. (31V, 44Q, 6.0A)

Could someone please advise me on the same? Thank you!

Kavya,

A GMAT score of 650+ is a "safe bet" when you apply to SMU. On the contrary, you can strengthen your application with significant work exp (6-9yrs) - not that you don't stand a chance with your current profile.

I suggest you to write to the adcom and seek advice. Hope you make the right decision.
Cheers!

Hi Kavya,

Just to add on, the minimum requirements for the SMU MBA are as follows:

Minimum of 2 years work experience
Proven academic ability
Leadership experience or potential
Community involvement and impact.

Their online application requires that you submit the following:

Three Short Essays
1. Why do you want to earn an MBA and why are you choosing to apply to SMU? If you are selected, how will you contribute to the SMU MBA programme? (500 words)
2. Describe your greatest weakness and how you have tried to overcome it. (300 words)
3. Discuss an ethical dilemma that you have faced in your professional career and how you have dealt with it. (300 words)

Two Recommendation Forms (PDF or WORD)
GMAT (More information is contained on the Graduate Management Admission Test website. SMU's GMAT institution code:
Part-time MBA: F8D-7V-35
Full-time MBA: F8D-7V-17)

---

If you can get strong recommendation forms from your superiors, it will definitely be a huge advantage, alongside a good GMAT score.

For the essays, I would recommend that you emphasize on your unique strengths - for example, with regards to how you will be able to contribute to the MBA program, your provision of insights and sharing of experience unique to your industry (social work?? sorry, your definition was kind of vague) would give you a competitive advantage as opposed to standard cookie cutter answers like 'I am very experienced in marketing'.

International students should also take advantage of the fact that they're from another country and express in their essays that they'll be able to bring diversity to the program and provide insights to the business climate in their countries, this is always a boon for global marketing related modules.

Hello guys

I am in serious dilemma, expecting some great insights from such a wonderful forum

my profile

M,31,India
Work ex - 10 years - almost 8 years into leadership position , financial services
Bachelors in Management - No international work ex

GMAT - 620

I am planning to retake my GMAT sometimes in Sep/Oct, but am not sure if i would be able to up my score or not

Now, my confusion is if i should apply to the school during the current deadline or should wait for the new score

I got in touch with the admissions officer, he suggested that its purely a personal decision :), i know its a personal decision but i need insights from you guys to reach to a conclusion

Expecting some great insights, and thanks a lot in advance

Though your GMAT score is less than the average GMAT score at SMU MBA, you have higher experience than the average work ex.

If you feel your overall application (Essays, Recos, Quality of work ex, managerial experience, extra curriculars) is better and these can nullify the effect of lower GMAT then you have a chance. This is my opinion and as the admission officer said it is entirely your personal decision.

Guys,

I have gone through this thread and come to know that batch size is only 35 (but on website its mentioned as 60), many aspirants have got their admits....so my question is if anyone is planning to apply now before 18th july(2nd round) or by 1st nov(final round) what are the chances of getting through????
Does anyone has statistics, ratio of no of applicants selected to no of applications?????

Thanks,
TG8

Hi -

I am a graduate from India's premier commerce college (Sri Ram College of Commerce) working at a Big 4 audit firm for the last 3 years. Through my tenure I have been promoted twice and am currently designated as a senior. During the past year I appeared for the GMAT thrice getting scores of 620, 640 and 640. I had been fairly well prepared but failed to score well in the actual exam. I am not very keen to write the exam once again, and was wondering if someone could assist me in the MBA application process. I intend to apply to SMU 2013 batch.

A candid response regarding the prospects of converting my application would be really helpful. Also, any additional inputs, for example alternate b-schools, miscellaneous suggestions, are welcome.

Thank you.

60 = FT + PT (full time + part time)
35 = FT (full time)

Chances of getting through entirely depend based on the factors related to your application (including the academic qualification, working experience, and interview performance etc) , also in relation to/compared with the already admitted and other applicant's profile.

Also there is slight chance that they might increase the total number of intakes this year, you might want to get it confirmed with the admissions manager @ SMU MBA.

Dear Friends,

Can anyone share some information regarding international student's placement. Has anyone able to contact to current student. What do the current students or alumni think about the placements from SMU.

Hello Guys,
Sorry for going dormant on this forum during the past one month. But the past one month has been quite hectic with lots of subjects and internship going on at the same time.
Glad to know that you all are thinking of applying to SMU MBA. You all seem to have great work experience on your side and i am sure you all will form a good cohort at SMU.

Frankly, i havent gone through all the posts during the past one month but I just noticed something about the class size and someone asked me about that as well (Class size was one of my primary concern as well when i first applied at SMU).

Well SMU is known for its focus on students. My current batch comprises of 58 students but that is not a restrictive number. It certainly depends on the quality of application. for sure, the number has already increased for the new batch of part time students. Incase the batch grows much bigger then i am pretty sure that SMU will split the batch into two classes as they wont compromise on the quality of education and its focus on personal attention towards students.

About the hostel, it is good to apply early.

Let me knw if you have any more concerns. Happy to help.

All the best.

Cheers,
Varun :)

Hi everyone,

I have submitted the SMU MBA application yesterday, paid the application fees too.

My official GMAT score & referee reports are already received by SMU.

Regarding rest of the documents such as passport etc., can i send the soft copy or need to mail on their address?

If later, can I send the mail after last date for round 2 (which was yesterday), in that case will my application be considered in round-2?

Thanks,

Sagarika

Dear Sir/madam,

I like to apply for full time MBA in round 2 deadline. I like to know:

1. My medium of instruction during under-graduation was English. Do I require to appear in
TOEFL. Medium of instruction is printed on transcript.

-You do not need to take the TOEFL.

2. Can the official copy of GMAT score via mail suffice the requirement or official copy from
GMAC( pearson) is mandatory.

-We require the official School Copy report from Pearson.

3. Is 18 july the deadline to submit application or is it the deadline to reach all the
documents to SMU.

- You can submit the application by 18 July and your supporting documents after that date.

Hello everyone,

I applied in round -2 and today received the mail from SMU that I have been put on waitlist for diversity reason. Is there anyone in the same boat or all get the interview calls from SMU.

hi All,

Applied to SMU R2 (last day), got an interview call within 1 week on mail from Anna, interviewed with 2 folks from SMU (1 from admissions, 1 from the MBA program) on 1st August. Was a very cool discussion on phone on why MBA / why SMU / qns on how my spouse would manage if I go for the MBA, etc. Am told it'll be a week before I hear on the final decision from the school. fingers crossed till then.

My profile: GMAT 730, Age 30, exp 7 yrs - sales & marketing
