These days people from top IIMs are not getting jobs what to say about UBS? My take is go for TCS job as long as your sure they are not reverting the offer. These days these IT jobs thats use to be available dime a dozen no longer seem to come so easily. But risk is there that if recession becomes worse TCS will retrench people - trainees will be the first to be shown the door.
I would be interested in discussing this. People from even top colleges may not be getting jobs as on today but people taking admissions now would be passing out in 2011. Do you expect the condition to remain as bad or get worse by then?
If no, it should be okay going ahead with MBA. If yes, then what guarantees that these IT companies would not fire the employees on a scale so large that has never been seen before?
I am suresh , my age is 27 yrs and 7 months , I have done BE in 2003 , I have worked in a manufacturing company for 2yrs , a Technical call center for 11 months and in a software testing company for 2 yrs 2months . Recently i was laid off because of non availability of projects .
I want to do Full time MBA as prospects of getting another job in IT field is very low due to recession. i have not given any of the entrance of MBA till now , i only have at present MAT and TANCET , I am also aware that there are only few institutes worth joining ,I am in a complete dilemma . Considering my age .
I would like to ask group members
will there be age criterion after completing MBA in Job selection, considering my limited exp in IT
Age i believe is never a factor in getting u placements. It is you.
I was asking myself a similar qs a yr back. I am 26,married and have 4 yrs of work ex, but for some reason could not pursue my mba dreams. Last year i made up my mind that i wanted to do it. I gave exams and i ll be joining NMIMS this year. In fact ur exp will get u good profiles. The decision is yours. If it is an mba that u want to do, go ahead, giv exams. You cud even try for the executive programs at some institutes. All the best!!

I wouldn't agree to that.
Most companies hire with a plan. they either see growth in a particular sector or they see overall growth within a certain period. in either case, the people who will be affected the most, are the ones who are currently employed, but without a project. these guys cannot be easily trained and moreover people with experience will not be ready to take up coding. freshers on the other hand can be molded the way the company wants.
Moreover, it doesn't make sense for the company, to spend so much in the hiring and training process and then waste it all by firing the trainees.
Its a very strategic move by software companies, because at a time like this, you will get the best of talents. if you look 3 years back, no IIT graduate would have preferred joining infosys. today, everybody is ready. And IT companies are enjoying this demand.
hi.puy in this days student hesitate to go abroad with compare to 2007,08 year so i have a little bit query if i can't get admission in good institutes like listed in PG 84 institutes, should i go abroad especially australia to do MBA? can anybody suggest that doing study in foreign is easy with compare to india? what should to do if one can't enter in good institute especially to do MBA ?
Hi Puys, I have quitted my job as System Analyst couple of days back. Right now I have got admission for two courses. Xime in Bangalore and Development and sustainable finance course in IFMR. After checking out the course contents and few interactions with seniors I am inclined towards this course. I dont know anything about finance except about the story of microfinance and few stuff like carbon trading through newspaper and net. I would like to know about the industry before finalizingthe course.
Are there any certifications to learn about microfinance, rural banking and stuff like that? Can anyone plz tell me about any companies where I can work on this field for a couple of months before joining the course. Its ok if I dont get any salary. I want to find whether I will be happy with the work I will be doing after completing the course.

hi swapnil, i believe you have an engineering background? but then, even with that it's pretty difficult to shift over to power generation right now after 4 years of IT work ex! if you are even ready to work in the software department of a power company, why at all are you contemplating of joining a power company then? i think you would be better off in a sofwtare company. am not sure...but then that is how it goes, usually! hope that helps!

Hey Man,
Thanks for your reply. Basically I am very much interested in working in power sector. Also work there in S/w dept will not be of delivering some projects to clients(It is my assumption.). And I believe there is huge difference between work culture of IT and power sector.

Hi Shashank, Well...lemme just say its not a world full of overachievers we live in.
You'd hear stories of guys, all out acad jocks, topping universities, strong profile etc etc vying for the management institutes for an education.
Lemme tell you something.... first off...kick the apprehension of "wasting a year/two years/three years". See, when the panelists raise eyebrows about what you've done previously, they're only looking for some consistency in the profile. They don't expect you to work in BCG in the meantime.
On the presumption that you've identified your interest area, work on it. For ex,like finance, try getting a job in a broker firm and do certifications on NCFM/CFA/FRM depending on your line of coherence. Get into online networks with like minded people, broaden your horizon and knotch up the maturity level on your interest area.
The panelists give a rat's ass whether you've spent dazing around for the last two years...its only that you should know what you are doing and how it makes sense in your short term goals/long term goals.
And what do you mean by "WHAT ARE MY CHANCES??".........dude, rather than ask on these lines, ask "how do i improve my chances?"
Shoot specific queries.....everyone here would always try to help and give you some sort of direction.

Doing MBA may help you to get into power sector. I know one inspiring puy(civil graduate) who worked for 5 yrs in IT, then went to IIMA, and finally placed in very senior position in a construction company.(His IT exp also counted).

Don't worry about the workex thing. It has some weightage in some institutes but it will be very less(5-10%). In the interview you have to give some reasons to panel. Better hone your knowledge of your hobby, you should have some purpose of learning spanish so you can convince them on that story.

hi- I ve jus joined the s/w industry-still under training.. I made to the finance based b-grade b-school.. Didnt opt for it though because of 2 reasons-recession and the other being not exactly interested in finance.. I would like to know- With the current market scenario and even top b-schools not being able to place 100% of itz students-Is MBA(2010-2012) a good option?
