well posting for help yet again...
there have been many changes since i last posted...so I seek your help..
I have an option of joining my family business(my joint family owns a petrol pump)....how good is this option?
I know i can show administrative roles and work done related to finance/operations at basic level...
1) will they consider the work-ex in first place and will they have slightly negative/suspicious approach towards me?
2)does anyone knows someone who is in IIM's and was working in his family business (which is not that big) prior to joining the same..
I have few other q's but they'll be relevant only if ans to above is yes...so will ask in next post..
Thanks for the kind help....
No offence but I am posting this question for the third time on pagal guy...I am new..Ab pata chala ki yaha question post karna h!
I scored 80.6% in 10th and 69.2% in 12th(PCM).I passed out from my school in 2008 and joined an engineering college after that. But left the college.
I plan to do BCA from this session and MBA after that.Though I should be concentrating on my UG first, but I have to admit,MBA is my ultimate goal and until I think about it first,I cant decide about what I have to do now!
Question 1:Will the year I dropped be a problem in relevance to my MBA?:lookround:
I need somebody to guide me about how can I utilise the three years I have to ensure admission in a good b-school in or outside India.I mean everything from academics to social work, preparing myself for everything I need to.Tell me about anything like business, management, marketing, how important some achievement and everything I should be or shouldn't be doing!
Please guide me about it like you would explain things to a lay man!I am willing to put in my best provided I am told what I am supposed to do!
Contact me at [email protected] if gettin in touch here is any problem!
Thanks,
Kritika
hey its in the laws of the books of pagalguy that you are not supposed to give your e-mail id...or any contacts on public forum...
that vill do u gud too.
Hey..
u talked about your being an avid reader...i dont think so(no personal offences on any front)as far as i know no avid reader only reads sidney sheldon(Its like asking a person as to whether or not he listens to english songs..nd he says yes i do hear vengaboys)..
so diversify your field..
1.Get into philosophy try ayn rand and robin sharma.
2.go for inspirational autobiographies and biographies.
3.Medical fiction:robin cook
4.Get in2 classics by rudyard kipling,ruskin bond,salman rushdie,jhumpa lahiri,anita desai and any thing..
Go for political upfront.Books like imagining india,it happened in india, books by national book trust, penguin publishers.
Go to a nearby bookstore spend some time..browse books, get into a reading club, exchange your collection..and then call urselg as an avid reader..
For any further books PM me..
Now i am ready for groans..(hey m nt getting ne similie)..hope dis groans go away soon...takes all ma self esteem..hehehehee
thanz!
I am an avid reader...I read The Hindu and I am into novels...but somebody told me I shouldn't be reading sidney sheldon and all that...then what am I exactly supposed to be reading othr than newspapers? What sort of magazineS?
I enjoy charity and dancing..but from all that I know some sort of social achievement is a pre-requisite to get into IIMs!
Social achievement cannot be depicted per se,in most cases.
So instead of concentrating on things that could fetch you recognition,do things because you enjoy doing them. That way you will have fun in the process of building a good profile for yourself.
As far as reading is concerned, read a national newspaper alongwith a business newspaper(ET/Financial Times).Magazines like Week/India Today would suffice.
No harm in reading Sidney Sheldon,as long as you are not stuck onto those and move on to other things in due course(as in to better fictional stuff gradually and to non-fiction finally).
Ayush,
I did NOT mean that I read JUST read Sidney Sheldon! What I wanted to say was that I am more into fiction just to give you an insight so that you could tell me where I have to change!!
The kind of books I need to read is exactly what I wanted to know...!!
takenoprisoners,
thanks a lot!! :)
could you suggest me the authors?

If you are talking about MS in technical subjects, you won't get anything here , this is a MBA-specific forum.

hi,
I worked as a systems/embedded programmer for 2.4 yrs and this global meltdown took my job. I have decent acads and extra circular activities. My long term goal is to have my own comp. should i go for MBA or MS or gain few more yrs of exp ????
Hello all, I am new to this thread. First of all thanks to all those who are pouring in their valuable suggestions. I am an engineering graduate who got a software placement in my campus selections but we were not given DOJs for obvious reasons, like many here i am guessing. I have been waiting for 10 months now. By the time it was almost clear that we were not going to get our joining letters, it was already January of this year. I quickly realized and gave MAT without much prep this february and got 95%ile. Meanwhile I applied for bank jobs and some other jobs but the whole process is obviously quite time consuming and by the time all these recruitment processes finish, it will be around august.
Whether it was my negligence or my over confidence of having a job in hand I don't know, I did not give CAT 2008 and just enjoyed the time till last december thinking that our offers would be honoured by the company and also we wouldn't get this much time again in our lives to spend with our family and friends. I had actually planned of doing my MBA through CAT after a couple of years of work ex, like many aspirants here. With the MAT score I got, I applied to a few B-Schools but I am not satisfied with any B-school in MAT except one or two. GD PI result of one of those 2 schools is awaited, other school rejected.
Actually, my first preference for this year is still for job over MBA. Job in any field, be it software, banking, telecom or my own core engineering field, electrical. The following are the options that I have now.
1. Joining a telecom training & placement institute and finding a job after 2 months of training.
2. Joining a job consultancy and finding any job.
3. Preparing for bank exams.
4. Finding a job in a BPO or a KPO.
I am totally confused and am clueless in which line to proceed now. Because, the first 3 options are time consuming and we cannot concentrate on any other opting for one of those three, and there is no guarentee that i will get a job sure shot, well it depends you know. The 4th option seems to be the easiest of all but is it a good option for getting work ex for an MBA later?
Besides all these, two things worry me.
1. How should I explain my ongoing year drop after graduation? i had already dropped a year after my 12th for IIT exam but couldn't crack it.
2. How should I explain the drastic drop in my grad (engg) percentage compared to 10th and 12th? my score in 10th and 12th is around 90-95% and in grad it is just 65% but no backlogs.
Time is running out and i need to get into something by this june, before the juniors enter the scene. I await the helpful suggestions and comments of many knowledgeable folks here. Thanks in advance.
I await any suggestions.

@the_hate: firstly, let me tell u that the interview process is purely subjective! you never know what pisses them off or makes u their blue-eyed guy! there is nothing wrong with family business, per se..but then given the fact that there are many folks out there who can produce crap workex certificates is what makes it a bit risky! having said that, if you can justify ur working in the family business & be thoroughly knowledgeable about its functioning..i don't see any reason why that might go against you! hope that anwers ur query to some extent!!
cheers

I don't think working in a family business of this kind would be of too much value. It is of course better than doing nothing else.
Maybe for a foreign B school you can show it to be of some value if you can write a good SOP. Desi B schools won't buy it. Unless your an Ambani or a Tata, even people intending to get into family business usually work outside for a couple of years or so. So it is better to be at a job especially if your plan after MBA is to go to a job.
