Done, bro.

hi all,

I am a BE Mechanical guy working in HCL tech for the last 1.8 years in the telecom vertical. I am going in for the CAT 2009, I certainly wouldnt want to get back in the IT sector. After seeing the current scenario what do you guys think MBA in which area of specialisation would be the most benificial in the long run?

I am more inclined towards MBA in Finance or Operations or Marketing. How will these options fare in the market by the time I pass out say by 2012 (hope for that 😃 ) ?

Thanks
Swapnil

hi,
I worked as a systems/embedded programmer for 2.4 yrs and this global meltdown took my job. I have decent acads and extra circular activities. My long term goal is to have my own comp. should i go for MBA or MS or gain few more yrs of exp ????

IMHO,please decide what would be more in tune with your long term goal of starting your own company.
If you do an MBA,would it be helpful for you to setup your own venture?
If so,which domain do you want to specialise in?
And if its an MS for you, which branch should it be?
And how could be helpful for starting your own company, considering yours might be a tech startup?
And most importantly, which colleges and courses are you looking at?
Give these things a thought.

Welcome to Pagalguy,Swapnil.
Finance/Ops/Mktg all are good options from which you can choose.(in 2012)
But to get to that stage, you need to clear CAT,then the GD/PI and get a final call and then get admitted.
So,don't you its a bit too early to think about specialisation right away!
Cross the bridge when you get to it.
Anyway, since you are keen to decide your specialisation, try and figure out your core strengths and interests and tally them with the reuirements of the specialisation you are looking at.That might be a structured way to approach the problem.
guys plz help me/my fren out soon

lets see the problems statement :P

he got a job offer in adobe systems and it has asked him to join on 30th of this month
and also he got call from IIM I which has given deadline also in the same range..

now the problem is whether to go IIM I or join adobe?? please reply at the earliest...
he also thinks that joinin adobe now and again scoring 99.9X in CAT 09 will be bit of a gambling

thank you..

If an MBA from a top mgmt institue in India is what your friend is looking at,going for the IIMI call seems to be sensible decision to make because in any case,he might go back there(or any of the other IIMs at best) aftr gaining some experience in Adobe.
True,it might help his lateral placement chances to have some experience under his belt, but going for the IIM call,as he has it right now, seems to be prudent thing to do.

Welcome to Pagalguy,Afshaa.

and welcome to IIM(Indian IT Male) club.

Your problem isn't the most unique and affects most of the software junta in India.

But nevertheless,it is something that messes up most peoples' minds and needs to be given a serious thought.

As I understand from your post, you are obviously frustrated with your job and hence are looking for better options in life.
While you definitely need to prepare for CAT this year with a renewed zeal, you also need to make sure you have something to show for in the interviews, for the time spent while preparing.

Hence, unless you have some other better job/options to keep yourself gainfully occupied(like doing CFA/some other certifications like NCFM,Six Sigma, and involving yourself with some more activities like volunteering at an NGO or pursuing other meaningful interests),its better you stick to your present job, given the market conditions.
You would then need to work out a schedule that allows you ample time to study, while continuing to work.

P.S:Taking a holiday/some time off from work might help you clear your mind and arrive at a well thought out decision.

All the best.

thanx so much take no prisoners, for ur valuable advice!!
but a small correction..

To quote with authors if u need to know about other authors u can PM me..coz i am in2 reading a lot....so hoping to get in2 happy reading hours with you..hope dis time u dnt groan at me...

Thw white tiger is a good read although i on the personal front did not find it to the standards of a booker...and if u vill hv to give a lotoftimeto the ayn rand book..but nodoubt a classic read..n if u are onto the same author also go for we the living....
i am meanwhilegoing through the book by subroto bagichi and hope togo for seaofpoppies next...tab tak happy reading

This year was my second attempt at MBA entrances after the one in my final year at college .. I have been waitlisted at 58 for mdi - pgpm (after a buffer of 210 calls this time) .. as per last years' trends i shd make it ..I also have a IIT-B wailist (62)

am a BE passout from MIT, manipal (2008 batch) .. working at verizon, chennai for the past 10 months (as so many IT professionals would agree ..my work too is very boring)..had calls this year from xl, fms, mdi, nitie, iit-b, iift, ximb ..didnt convert any ..though my waitlist at mdi most probably happened due to my high cat score ..now, had i been really fit n ready to take up an MBA ..i shd have converted xl or fms irrespective of the written score ..so my queries:

1. shd i take up an mba this year or wait again for one more year (or maybe explore some other career) so that I might get thru better colleges next year .. now this proposition becomes interesting as CAT is all set to be online from this year ..uncertain again
my acads 10th- 80% 12th- 81% ..so, acc. to current criteria, IIM a,b,l,s will never call me at whatever cat score

2. rankings everywhere rate mdi higher than iit-b ..coz maybe mdi is older ..but iit-b has a relatively small batch size ..104 in total (62 general) ..means more opportunites ..also, i belong to delhi so mdi that way would be preferable (isnt it important) ..which one is preferable ?

I understand the last query threads the fine line of comparison of b-schools but still if anyone could help ..thanks

Thanks estranged_gnrs ..

The reason I say am not 'yet' prepared for an MBA is coz I did work hard for the GD/PI process ..mock GDs ..many PI sessions ..in fact more intense than my prep for the written tests ..now, I enjoy giving the written tests of MBA entrances but also just because I do well in the written tests doesnt mean an MBA is for me ..

so as you said ..its very pertinent to realize my interests first and joining MDI or IIT-B this year might not be the solution ..

Hi Vinz,

You had several calls but could not convert this year, IMHO, the reason for this may be that you were unprepared for the GD/PI process. Do some analysis of yourself and then you may realise where you lacked. Was it communication skills or articulation of thoughts or your whole presentation of yourself. These things can be fixed and one year is a good enough time for it.
Do not think that you could not convert cos you were not fit for MBA. :)

As for the job change, I would suggest again, ask few questions to yourself and try to find out what you are good at. If you want to change your job and shift to a different domain, it is a risk during these times, but if you are successful in it, then it is worth it.

The criteria for IIMs keep on changing every year, so speculating on that based on your past performance is something nto advisable. More so, with CAT going online this year, we have right now no clue about what will be the qualifying parameters this time around.

As for choosing between colleges, rankings are just an indicator. Lot of other factors like location preference, the kind of batchmates you have, specializations expertise etc are few things you can look at. It is always best to talk to few students or discuss with people on pagalguy forums about these things to make a better decision.

Hope this helps. But do remember, MBA degree is not the key for solving your career dielmmas, what matters is you find out what you are good at and go for it, MBA degree or not.

Cheers,
Rohit

Guys...

I am in a bit of dilemma...

I am an IT professional with around 2 yrs and 8 months of experience...
Took a second serious attempt at indian B-schools .and the scores are as follows:

CAT..90.1, XAT..93 ,SNAP:75.25, NMIMS..rejected..JMET..rejected..IIFT..rejected...did not take FMS...

Did not apply to CAT allied insti like FORE/UBS/KG somaiya...and the likes...

Now , the only decent call which i got was of SIIB..where i have been waitlisted at 125 ..and hope to convert it with 80% probability...

My acads are as under:

10th : 84.2
12th : 69.6
BTech(Mechanical )from a good govt college..with reputation almost equivalent to an NIT):72.6

Now,i m in a dilemma whther to take CAT again?..or look for other options via GMAT?...or..join SIIB..which i will convert most likely...
Morover, i want to know to wat extent my 12th marks will mar my chances ?...i knw..IIMs have already made it clear regarding their importance towards 10th/12th marks..can nyone send me the exact criteria reg 10th/12th marks?...

hi,
as i have said before, i reiterate my point again - your 12th marks is a bit low undoubtedly but then it is not so low so as to deny you an IIM GD/PI call! there are a couple of IIMs like IIMC which does not place so much of an emphasis on your past acads! there is no exact criteria as such..it keeps changing with each passing year!
as regards, writing CAT again..it's upto you..but if you would ask me I think you should give it one last wholehearted effort!! you have nothing to lose, buddy! don't worry about your 12th marks so much..get a good CAT percentile & you are on quite a level playing field, trust me!! ATB!!

cheers

see..i basically got perturbed when one of the puys posted...

Hi Samarth
Welcome to Pagalguy.
Whether you should take up CAT again depends entirely on the level of college you would be satisfied with.If you feel that SIIB is a college you are content with,go for it.
GMAT is also an option provided you are looking at the cost factor and benefits involved.

As for the 10th/12th marks weightage,u can PM me your id.
I will mail u the same.
